What a vibrant panel on the power of storytelling!

How do we encourage our communities to share their lived experiences?

šŸ§µ Just a few of the valuable insights from our panelists #NIIC202

@ErikaAndiola @megasuniverse @HaitianBridge @adhikaar @theYoungCenter @npnewamericans @NIICImmigrant Sharing our stories can be stressful, even stigmatizing for certain communities. According to our speakers, movement champs who all shared their own stories, this is šŸ—ļø:

šŸ’„ Building trust
šŸ’„ Fostering a safe space
šŸ’„ Practicing consent
šŸ’„ Transferring leadership

šŸ“ø: @gcirtweets Image
Sharing our stories can also be part of the #Healing process, according to ASAP member Daniel Paz, who was separated from his young daughter at the border under Trump's #FamilySeparation policy, and has since become a national advocate for separated families and #AsylumSeekers. Image

It should enrage you.

The article is 30,000 words and is attached at the end. It may have a paywall
This excerpt speaks for itself.
The children were ripped from. Their parents arms and crammed into "cages."

When we talk about #WhiteSupremacy being systemic, this is what we mean (A THREADšŸ§µ):
The issues at our border didnā€™t end when Trumpā€™s inhumane ā€œ#FamilySeparationā€ policies ended.
The racism and classism against people from countries like #Haiti didnā€™t magically disappear when President Biden took office.

If you are mad about #FamilySeparation then you need to stand against expanded expedited removal, which lets ICE snatch immigrants from our communities and deport them with zero due process. Guarantee that many kids will lose their parents to this policy
Expanded expedited removal makes ICE the prosecutor, judge, and executioner. Itā€™s like having the police officer who arrested you find you guilty without a judge or defense atty. Itā€™s incredibly dangerous for immigrants and citizens alike
There have been MANY cases of US citizens detained by ICE/CBP. In my experience, I had to bring proof of citizenship before a judge to win release. Expanded expedited removal takes the judge out of the process, so expect to see more US citizens dumped over the border

The president announced an #ImmigrationBan

Why?šŸ‘‡
Because when the administration mishandles a crisis, immigrants become the scapegoat.

Racism, xenophobia & misinformation are used to enact anti-immigrant policies.

The impact? Immigrants disappear from their communities, families get separated & ppl die in detention centers.
All while the real crisis is left unaddressed.

There is 0 public health rationale for an #ImmigrationBanā€”especially b/c immigrants are crucial to the nationā€™s response to the pandemic.

Immigrants are disproportionately in frontline jobs at hospitals, grocery stores & farms.

Trump administration just announced new immigration restrictions, just about 3 years after the #MuslimBan. It applies to: Myanmar, Nigeria, Tanzania, Kyrgyzstan, Eritrea, Sudan. Lots to unpack here, so keep reading.
4 out of 6 of these countries are in Africa. Trump has never wanted immigration from Africa, remember this remark about "shithole countries"? 4 of them are also majority Muslim, so there's def a pattern here.
The bulk of the restrictions apply to immigrant visas -- ppl from Nigeria, Myanmar, Kyrgyzstan & Eritrea who would mostly be coming to unite w family in the U.S. can't do that anymore. As we've said before, these bans operate as #familyseparation policies. thehill.com/opinion/immigrā€¦

THREAD: Yesterday, a federal judge ruled that the US gov is legally responsible for the #MentalHealth trauma that Trumpā€™s #FamilySeparation policy inflicted on thousands of migrant families at the US/Mexico border. nytimes.com/2019/11/06/us/ā€¦ (1/9)

Upon arriving in the US, migrants were humiliated, shouted at, and held in horrific conditions.

They waited in ICE custody ā€“ cold, hungry, and without medical care or translators.

More than 400 parents were deported without their kids last year. Many parents opted not to be reunited w/ their kids in the hopes they could successfully pursue asylum on their own. Some kids were reunited w/ their families back home.
But the @ACLU argued less than two dozen parents had "bona fide" asylum claims and were denied that right under the so-called "zero tolerance" immigration policy last year. Here's coverage from the court hearing this summer: courthousenews.com/feds-deny-breaā€¦

@OIGatHHS .@HHSgov faced unique challenges in addressing the mental health needs of separated children, who suffered fear, abandonment, post-traumatic stress, & anxiety. Some cried uncontrollably from ā€œacute grief.ā€

Of course they did ā€“ the Trump Admin tore these kids from their parents.
@OIGatHHS @HHSGov Stunningly, this report reveals that ORR staff did not know how to seek approval or consent to treat traumatized children with psychotropic medication. The lack of clarity on this process is unacceptable and disturbing.

One surefire way to prepare the public for rapid expansion of child concentration camps is to use images of people jammed into overcrowded 72 hr processing stations . . .

Just as the regime tried to use exponentially expanded #FamilyDetention as a solution to #FamilySeparation
Keep an eye on the military, which the regime turns to in these times, and which, after the departure of Sec. Mattis, has seen an erosion of institutional resistance, e.g., USS John S McCain on Memorial Day.

The Dignity for Detained Immigrants Act was originally introduced in 2018, but HR 2415 is back in 2019, via @RepJayapal, @RepAdamSmith & in the Senate, @SenBooker has introduced S 1243.

Let's run down the particulars of the House bill!

#FamilySeparation #FamiliesBelongTogether
@RepJayapal @RepAdamSmith @SenBooker Text of the House Dignity for Detained Immigrants Act itself, HR 2415.

"To provide standards for facilities at which aliens in the custody of the Department of Homeland Security are detained, and for other purposes."

(sorry for the delay--some BP issues)
congress.gov/bill/116th-conā€¦
@RepJayapal @RepAdamSmith @SenBooker HR 2415 has 8 sections, but 2 are basically "this is the bill's name" and "yep, that was the bill," so we'll look at the other 6.

Sec2 says DHS detention facilities need to adopt standards within a year of the bill's passage, no less strict than the ABA set forth in 2012.

Good.
