Final session at #FASSM is a plenary.
What does progress look like? Example of the Women's March. It brought women together, but it is not a perfect movement. Disagreements among activists, competition between people. Good intentions but also some potential for harm. #FASSM

Today I presented our poster 'How can we make fieldwork safer?' at @FassmC #FASSM - a (brief) summary of research that has come out of my dissertation on sexual misconduct during fieldwork, and the specific risk-factors involved.

The study took the form of a survey open internationally to archaeologists & anthropologists. The survey asked questions on: 1) the demographics of the respondent, 2) their most recent fieldwork experience, 3) their most recent experience of misconduct (if they'd experienced it).
Our first research question was: whilst recent studies have shown that misconduct occurs at high rates during fieldwork, why is this? Are there any specific environmental or social variables that might explain or predict this? If so, how can this inform policy?

Talks about the importance of classing sexual conduct as harassment when it is *unwelcome*, and moving away from using the term consent, which is poorly understood, and cannot easily accommodate issues of power inequalities #fassm
Highlights how we need to move away from a culture that views people making complaints as a nuisance, as causing trouble. They are in fact helping authorities to deliver their obligations. #fassm

1st breakout of the day is on disciplinary procedures. Talking about how data protection laws can often stop institutions protecting and warning students and staff from perpetrators. I believe it can also be a cop-out for institutions that benefit from keeping things quiet #fassm
Victims have already been violated and are further violated by disciplinary procedures that take away their autonomy, choice, and control #fassm
The importance of trauma-informed policies and procedures is so important. A common q from investigators who aren't properly trained: 'why didn't you leave/say something/etc?" - 70% of rape victims experience tonic immobility: temporary paralysis during the event #FASSM
Had such a wonderful first day at #FASSM. Knowledge sharing in an inclusive, safe, and caring way at its very best. Met and was reunited with *so* many amazing activists and academics — really honoured to be here. And look at the view!
An especially thought-provoking conversation I’ve had repeatedly today is the conflict between codes of conduct that are enforceable and our aspirational values / behaviour in professional contexts that we want others to follow. How do we deal with this? #FASSM
