Please retweet if you want a Progressive Alliance to get the Tories out.

We are sick and tired of infantile and outdated Tory-enabling political tribalism. We want grown-up electoral cooperation.

#FBPA Follow Back Progressive Alliance
Daisy Cooper MP @libdemdaisy has argued that Progressive Alliances don't work. I would argue that she is wrong. The clear tactical voting messages in byelections will be muddied in a General Election, unless there is something like the 1997 Blair-Ashdown pact.
The 1997 Blair-Ashdown pact was kept quiet, but the agreed list of seats for tactical voting was published in the Mirror. It was very effective. I cannot see how that could be reproduced in the present day without the Tory media getting wind of the fact that there was a pact.

Please retweet if you want Labour LibDems and Greens to form a Progressive Alliance to beat the Tories, introduce PR, and radically reform our battered democracy.

#FBPA Follow Back #ProgressiveAlliance
A Progressive Alliance is necessary because what we are facing is not politics as usual. We have the most corrupt government in living memory, and a Tory elite intent on eroding democracy and human rights.
The Tory Brexiters have portrayed themselves as rebels. But when the rich and powerful rebel, they are rebelling against the rest of us. They are rebelling against the democracy, laws and political norms which curb their power.

1/ Starmer hints that Labour will step back in Lib Dem target seats

This is a positive move. But the problem will be to get seat-specific tactical voting guidance to voters who may tend to vote on national lines.

2/ In 1997 Blair and Ashdown agreed a list of key seats where Labour and LibDems should stand back. Tactical voting guidance for these seats was published in the Mirror. How can this be replicated in the present day media environment?
3/ There is also a risk that an informal opposition electoral pact will be denounced as an attempt by the political elite to stich up the election. That's one reason why we must make the campaign for a Progressive Alliance as large and as loud as possible. #FBPA

In plain sight, the Tory elite is rigging the system to stay in power

Weakening the courts, limiting protest, hobbling the elections regulator. If another country did this, what would we call it?

Defend Democracy - #FBPA Follow Back Progressive Alliance theguardian.com/commentisfree/…
The Tories were once a mass-membership party representing the middle class and ordinary British businesses who needed democracy. Now the Tory elite serve only themselves and their super-rich paymasters many of whom belong to the global and largely offshore elite.
The Tory elite will at times pay lip-service to the needs of ordinary people. But that is only to retain power. Their real interest is increase their own wealth and power while pleasing their kleptocratic patrons.

Please retweet if you want the opposition parties to cooperate in the next General Election in order to get the Tories out.

Current polling suggests a Tory defeat, but a small recovery would keep them in power with DUP help.

#FBPA = Follow Back #ProgressiveAlliance
A Progressive Alliance isn't about parties giving up their identity. It should be about strengthening and reforming democracy, including proportional representation, kicking big money out of politics, media reform and genuine regional government.
A Progressive Alliance could be a 1997 style informal pact. But I think that a formal alliance built around a shared commitment to democratic reform could be presented as a new grown-up style of politics, built around compromise rather than schoolboy yah-boo tribal yelling.

1/ Yes, the Paterson fiasco confirms the threat Boris Johnson poses to British democracy, but the article does not go deep enough. Johnson is merely the symptom of social and economic changes that have fundamentally transformed our politics.

2/ I wrote this article explaining how deindustrialisation and other economic changes have shattered the working & middle classes as coherent political forces, thus enabling the Tory elite and their super-rich patrons to rule over a fragmented electorate.
sussexbylines.co.uk/un-divide-to-c…
3/ The dramatic economic and social changes wrought by deindustrialisation make it far easier for corrupt, negligent and anti-democratic populist politicians to rise to power within the Tory party and the nation. Johnson is just a symptom of a much deeper rooted malaise.

Let's think about this.

Apparently, you live in a sovereign parliamentary democracy with a free press.

Yesterday the leaders sold a build back better budget as a victory.

90% of the Press (excl⬇️) "forgot" to mention

2. Due to a #BrexitDisaster twice as bad as the pandemic effect
3. With the UK still topping the charts for worse Pandemic results⬇️
4. Results those in charge have made worse by consistently delaying decisions
5. While they gas lit jingoism to distract

6. And failed to examine and hence learn from their own mistakes

1/ The Tories continue to lead in the polls. We have to understand that deindustrialisation has shattered the working class as a political force. The opposition has to cooperate in a Progressive Alliance or face a further defeat.

2/ Deindustrialisation has shattered the working class communities and organisations that formed the backbone of the Labour party. Disorientated voters are now clinging to the fake community of tribal nationalism, and the Tories are taking full advantage. sussexbylines.co.uk/un-divide-to-c…
3/ For a social class to be a political force requires much more than a lot of people being in similar economic circumstances. It requires well developed communities and a web of organisations linking them to a political party. In the British working class these have crumbled.

Economic and and social change have shattered Labour's working-class support base. The old politics is not coming back. If the opposition want to win then they must join in a Progressive Alliance and commit to Proportional Representation. #FBPA #FBPPR
sussexbylines.co.uk/un-divide-to-c…
FPTP made a fair bit of sense in a society divided on class lines, when the two main parties had to battle over the political middle ground. But class politics is dead, and in a fragmented society FPTP makes no sense. PR and cooperation are required for a diverse society.
The idea that economics directly drives politics, whether of the Marxist variety in which economics drives class structures and politics, or the centre-left variety in which people respond rationally to economic policies and conditions, is naive.

Deindustrialisation has shattered Labour's working class support base, and left millions of people in a confusing and fragmented society open to the Tory propaganda of tribal nationalism and culture wars. How can the opposition respond? #FBPA #FBPPR
sussexbylines.co.uk/un-divide-to-c…
In the middle of the last century the Labour movement was deeply embedded in stable working class communities. The Tories were a mass membership party serving the middle class and hundreds of thousands of British businesses.
Since the middle of the last century the working and middle classes have crumbled as political forces. Now we have an 18th century style of politics in which the political and media minions of a sociopathic fragment of the super-rich manipulate a fragmented electorate.

@Neal_Compass I live in #CheshamAndAmersham @derek_rocholl. Campaigned for tactical voting in 2019. Now campaigning for #ProgressiveAlliance. In recent by-election, we needed some votes from @conservatives. These would never have voted @UKLabour. This is why local plans are needed
@chilterns4
@Neal_Compass @derek_rocholl @Conservatives @UKLabour @chilterns4 Also, in 2019, we campaigned for tactical voting in 4 Chilterns constituencies. Lack of reciprocity lost us all four seats. @libdems would not stand aside in High Wycombe because @UKLabour would not stand aside in Chesham and Amersham. Frankly, absurd, irresponsible @chilterns4
@Neal_Compass @derek_rocholl @Conservatives @UKLabour @chilterns4 @LibDems Frankly I NEVER want to feel what I felt the day after 2019 election. Wandering dazed through Chesham. Seeing the damage the @conservatives had done/would do. Feeling devastated. Knowing that if there had been cooperation then we would have won at least High Wycombe @chilterns4

Recent polls reinforce the message that we need a Progressive Alliance. With a divided opposition the Tories would almost certainly win a Parliamentary majority, whereas a united opposition would gain a clear victory.

A Progressive Alliance must not look like a cynical electoral manipulation devised by the party leaders. It has to emerge out of debate within and outside the parties. That's why the Compass campaign in Labour, LibDems and Greens is vital. @Neal_Compass

It must be clear that a Progressive Alliance is about defending and strengthening our democracy, and pitting our values like truth, honesty, fairness, justice, cooperation and care against the populist right’s offering of lies, corruption, manipulation, fear, hatred and division
