I’ve had a few questions on the revenue impact of Barcelona’s exit elimination from this season’s Champions League after the group stage. As is often the case, the answer depends on how you look at it #FCBarcelona
As per my model, #FCBarcelona have earned €70.2m from this season’s Champions League, comprising participation fee €15.6m, prize money €7.0m, UEFA coefficient €34.1m and TV pool €15.9m less €2.5m COVID rebate to broadcasters.
As we can see, #FCBarcelona have benefited from their previous good record in Europe with their UEFA coefficient €34.1m payment accounting for nearly half their total €70.2m distribution. This is currently the third highest in Europe, only behind #RealMadrid and #FCBayern.
Thread on how much money clubs have already received after the Champions League 2022/23 group stage. Also includes estimates for English clubs in Europa League and Europa Conference League. Some assumptions made about the TV pool, but the figures should be reasonably accurate.
The Champions League accounts for the lion’s share of UEFA revenue with its €2.032 bln being nearly 3 times as much as the Europa League and Europa Conference combined (€700m). The difference is particularly stark in the UEFA coefficient (based on 10-year rankings).
Champions League overall prize money is 3.6 times the Europa League and 5.5 times the Europa Conference, but this varies by round. In general, the difference becomes smaller the further a club progresses, e.g. last 16 it’s 8x and 16x, while for the winners it’s only 2.3x and 4x.

Following Bayern Munich’s imperious start to the season, on the back of 10 Bundesliga titles in a row, I thought it might be interesting to look at their finances, even though it’s been a while since they published their 2020/21 accounts #FCBayern
Despite the significant impact of COVID, #FCBayern “achieved sound financial results”, once again posting a pre-tax profit, though down from €17m to €5m (€2m after tax). Revenue (club definition) fell €54m (8%) from €698m to €644m, largely offset by €42m cut in expenses.
#FCBayern revenue hit by COVID driven reductions in match day, down €59m (83%) to €12m, and commercial, down €15m (4%) to €345m, while transfer income dropped €31m to €33m. Broadcasting rose €51m (25%) to €255m, mainly due to money deferred from extended 2019/20 season.

L'entraîneur a également introduit un nouveau système de points pour l'équipe à partir de la nouvelle saison. Toutes les performances des joueurs à l'entraînement et leurs victoires en match d'entraînement sont désormais enregistrées et inscrites dans des tableaux.
Cela permet à l'équipe d'entraîneurs de s'appuyer sur des chiffres et des statistiques pour décider des alignements. La saison 2022/23 sera une sorte de test de maturité pour Nagelsmann.
UEFA have announced new Financial Sustainability regulations from June 2022. President Aleksander Ceferin explained, “The evolution of the football industry, alongside the inevitable financial effects of the pandemic, has shown the need for wholesale reform and new regulations.”
UEFA director Andrea Traverso noted, “Competitive imbalance cannot be addressed simply by financial regulations. It must be addressed in combination with other measures. This is why we changed the name. The name fair play was interpreted as creating a level playing field.”
Ceferin added, “UEFA’s first financial regulations, introduced in 2010, served their primary purpose.” Now, instead of so-called Financial Fair Play, the focus is on the financial sustainability of clubs with 3 key pillars being monitored: solvency, stability and cost control.
There have been a few analyses of football club debt published recently, which are at best misleading, if not downright incorrect. So it’s once again time to wheel out my explanation of why debt figures should be treated with caution, as there are so many different definitions.
For the purpose of this review I will take the 2020/21 audited accounts of those clubs featuring in the Deloitte Money League (with the exception of Zenit St Petersburg, where I have not managed to source the details).
At the narrowest extreme, we have just bank debt, but the broadest extreme covers total liabilities, which includes all financial obligations, including transfer debt, staff payables, tax liabilities, trade creditors, provisions, accrued expenses and even deferred income.
UEFA has published the revenue distributions for the Champions League and Europa League in the 2020/21 season. Although these are very close to the modelled figures that I have previously provided, I thought some people might like to have the final, official figures.
A year ago 12 clubs announced a European Super League (ESL) before fan protests led to a humiliating climbdown just days later. However, the factors that drove the 12 clubs to this deeply unpopular move largely remain. It’s still all about money: a combination of fear and greed.
There is little doubt that many of the 12 Super League clubs continue to face serious financial problems. To some extent, this helps explain why the “dirty dozen” would seek more revenue, but that certainly does not excuse their horribly ill-conceived plan.
It is somewhat ironic that these clubs lamented the perilous state of their finances while simultaneously claiming that they had all the answers. Their argument that the Super League would somehow benefit the wider football family should also be taken with a large pinch of salt.
Quick financial comparison of the clubs in this week’s Champions League quarter-finals. This is based on the most recent 2020/21 accounts, which were significantly impacted by COVID (with nearly all games played behind closed doors), but the differences are still instructive.
Deloitte have published the 25th edition of their annual Football Money League, which ranks the world’s leading football clubs by revenue, this time covering the 2020/21 season. Some thoughts in the following thread.
Deloitte said that the Money League remains “the most contemporary and reliable independent analysis of the top clubs’ relative financial performance”, which is largely true, even though they had to re-issue this year’s report after initially mis-stating #Milan revenue.
Revenue has obviously been significantly impacted by COVID-19. Deloitte estimate that the Money league clubs have missed out on well over €2 bln of revenue over the 2019/20 and 2020/21 season as a result of the pandemic.

Borussia Dortmund 2020/21 accounts cover a season seriously impacted by COVID, when they finished third in the Bundesliga, won the DFB Cup and reached the Champions League quarter-finals. Head coach Lucien Favre was replaced by Marco Rose for 2021/22. Some thoughts follow #BVB
#BVB pre-tax loss widened from €47m to €73m, as revenue dropped €35m (9%) from €379m to €345m and profit on player sales fell €25m from €40m to €15m, partly offset by cutting operating expenses by €31m and net interest payable decreasing €2m.
#BVB €35m revenue fall was due to COVID driven reductions in match operations, down €32m (98%) to €1m, and commercial, down €21m (12%) to €147m. On the other hand, broadcasting rose €17m (10%) to €187m, mainly Champions League money, while other income was up €1m to €10m
Given the importance of wage bills to the likely success of football clubs, I thought that it would be interesting to look at wages for the Big 5 European leagues in the 2019/20 season (the most recently published accounts). Some thoughts in the following thread.
As a technical note, I have converted wages from Euro denominated leagues to GBP using the 1.14 exchange rate from the Deloitte Money League. To facilitate comparison, I have provided figures for each league in both Euros and GBP, though the overviews are only in GBP.
