Ich bin froh, dass @AmreiBahr als Vertreterin für #IchBinHanna da war.

@AKellerGEW als Arbeitnehmer:innenvertreter.

I spent my getting-ready morning time listening to the @Ologies episode on tortoises with @biophiliamanda. A couple of observations. 1/n #ologies #sciencecommunication #appliedlearning #fieldwork
@Ologies @biophiliamanda First: Tortoises. Tortoises are turtles, and I love turtles. Once, in Australia, while snorkeling off @LadyElliotGBR, I saw sea turtle and started following her and when she finally dove too deep for me to follow I surfaced and realized that while I could not see the boat 2/n
@Ologies @biophiliamanda ... I could see my now-husband, who COULD see the boat, and had followed me, knowing I was on some hyper-focused lack-of-self-preservation quest. (Choose your partners well!) Back to Ologies, though. 3/n

As of today, I’m a tenured Professor of Law (same day as @LeahLitman!). I can readily imagine myself in a different life – the one that I was on track for with a 10th grade education, unsafe living conditions, insecure minimum wage work. So, a few reflections.
First, I grew up in a wealthy nation, I’m white, cis-gender, a quick study. I had control over none of these things. Yet they've meant I haven’t faced barriers that others face when trying to move from basic survival to a life I love.
Next, for a story like mine to come out this way required both societal support - emergency housing, the free program that first taught me how write an essay (@UNSW – thank you!) & so much more...

Just spent 2 hours talking to a #firstgen 1L and giving him all the suggestions I wish I'd had access to when I was a First Gen 1L in 1991. Here's what I recommended for study aids: 1/x
To make studying more interesting and maximizing productive retrieval and storage, I recommended Law in a Flash (also @SpacedRep) and the free Exam Pro questions on @Westlaw Study Aid subscriptions many law schools have. 2/x
For help with understanding dense text and dealing with the tedium of constant reading, I recommend the Black Letter Series (part of the @Westlaw study aid package) and an audio lecture series (@Westlaw Study Aid series offers a few). Also, check your professors' recommendations.

The hardest thing I've done in 2022 was prep and submit my Tenure & Promotion dossier, which is now happily moving thru dept + uni committees. This took me ALL of spring semester (as big a time suck as writing a new grant), so here a 🧵 illuminating the T&P process #academiclife
First, I had to write my T&P dossier entirely *from scratch* since I never had a 3rd year review due to UCR->UGA lab move. Every uni has its own format/system for T&P dossiers, so your 3rd year review is usually "practice" for this process (+ forces you use correct formats, 2/n)
Importantly, when I moved to UGA I negotiated three years of "credit" towards T&P, so I didn't have to completely restart the tenure clock here (get this in writing!). But, any CVs/documents/annual review materials I had from the UC system were basically useless at new uni (3/n)

Curious about careers outside of academia? Feeling sad, scared, & lost? Have no idea where to start?

I was there! Thankfully, I put my #firstgen skills to work & found the info I needed.

Here are my fav resources that helped me move on from academia & secure an alt-ac job! 1/
@BeyondProf has so many resources. I've attended their webinars, gone to their career conference, & read so many articles on their website.

They recommend spending the first months of your job search just exploring - what careers interest you most?

beyondprof.com/upcoming-event… 2/
@ProfessorIsIn has a great book, podcast, and blog. There is also a facebook support group for those looking for careers outside academia, in case you need some mutual support (there are 21k members currently - you are not alone!)

On behalf of @USCViterbi Dean's Office, I'm organizing a free (virtual) 2-day workshop + "grad program fair" for UGs interested in pursuing grad degrees in STEM this summer. W/ 2days, we can cover many topics. What should we discuss? Who should I invite as speakers/panelists?
🧵
I did this previously and discussed the below in a series of panels (w/ lots of time for Q&A). I was thinking a similar format this time, along with a pair of a "plenaries" (but short talks w/ Q&A).

(Also, the below are on my group's YouTube channel.)
2/N
Also, I want to have a "grad fair" - like a career fair, but a place where grad schools from across the country can have "rooms" to answer Q's about their programs, applications, ..

@USC did a virtual career fair in the fall that worked, so I'm building on that framework. 3/N

Excellent @chronicle webinar "The Mental-Health Crisis on Campus" with Dr. Gary Glass, Ryan Houston-Dial, @DoreenSMarshall, Dr. Michael G. Mason & Dr. Kimberly Quinn - moderated by @AlexanderKafka.

I've *NEVER* seen this amount of questions consistently roll in during a webinar. Image
This (mental health crisis) has been going on for 10+ years.

We (staff) don’t care any less – and because of that, the burden *feels* even heavier when the narrative is that we can’t handle the demand. - Dr. Gary Glass
We’ve doubled, almost tripled, our staff since I got here – we are still understaffed. - Dr. Michael G. Mason

Doubling & tripling the *amount* of counselors is NOT the “golden” solution. - Dr. Gary D. Glass

...in the words of Dr. Rackley (s/o to SUBR): hint, hint, clue, clue!

Applicants applying Early Action or Early Decision through @CommonApp in 2020-21 came from substantially higher-income neighborhoods, relative to other admission plans on average. Our latest report: s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/ca.research.pu… #emchat #highered #collegeadmissions 1/
We’re also seeing substantially fewer #FirstGen & URM students represented in the early admissions applicant pools. It is widely known that early admission plans put these students at a disadvantage, relative to their White, more affluent, non-first generation peers. 2/
It is worth remembering: most @CommonApp members (63%) offered rolling admission plans in 2020-21, up from 61% in 2018-19, offering students the flexibility to weigh financial aid options and reduce stress while applying. 3/

UUK say ppl want precarious contracts in HE. Really? After my phd I spent 7 yrs on fixed term research contracts. “Luckily” projects arose that I was qualified for so I had 6 renewals, 6 redundancy experiences. How do you mentally & financially manage this situation? #UCUstrike
1. Save save save. The individual absorbs the social risk of redundancy. Uni pay the bare minimum redundancy (after 2 yrs) . Save as much as possible, live in cheap housing, rely on partner’s wage. (Obvs inequalities issues galore, esp as #firstgen & #workingclassacademic)
2. You can try to write & win new grants yourself at weekends & find a permanent academic colleague to front them. Depending where you are there’s no guarantee you’d get the fixed-term job if your grant succeeds. Uni also cap the salary grade regardless of responsibility

THREAD on @TheLSSSE 2021 Annual Report, "The #COVID Crisis in Legal Education." There's some good news, some bad news, and a call to action. Listen up! 👇 /1 lssse.indiana.edu/wp-content/upl… Image
.@TheLSSSE Report begins with comments from law students. Some are positive: "Most profs have done an amazing job in dealing w/#COVID & transitioning to hybrid learning." Others are agonizing: “Most of us are struggling--financially, physically, emotionally.” Let's dig deeper. /2
First, some good news: the core of #legaled is relatively unchanged, with high levels of satisfaction & positive interactions with faculty & classmates. One high point in @TheLSSSE data: 93% of students appreciated that their law profs showed “care and concern for students." /3 Image

As a first-generation #Kenyan American, raised in #Kenya and very much an #African child (if you know you know), a #doctor is very much what I was going to be from the time I was born. 😋 (thankfully, also a marrying of my love of science and taking care of people!) 2/
So it was to my parents’ incredible delight when I got accepted to #medicalschool, never having... basically... known someone who had done so, in the US anyway. #firstgen #firstgeneration (yes, this story has a comical peak, wait for it...) 3/

75% of the 107 disabled academics that responded experienced #disability discrimination in #academia.
Of those, over 2/3 did not report it.
Only 9% had not experienced it.

Academia is not OK.
@DisabledAcadem @DBetterAcademia @DisInHigherEd @AcademicAbleism @AcademicChatter Photo of Twitter poll results which shows the following: “
This isn’t even considering other diversity factors and intersectionality.
The discrimination and barriers women, #firstgen, and other minority groups face in academia are problematic enough on their own.
Coupled with this... it just seems impossible.
I don’t know what else to say other than that I am determined to make change.

First comes awareness though, and this is my attempt.

If any #disabilityStudies academics want to school me on this it would be oh so welcome.
I’m considering a whole new career path. 😅

I’ll share my #firstgen story. I did not even consider college because I did not think I would be “eligible” even though I did well in high school. No counselor every talked to me about college. I think it was because I was poor and had worked in high school 1/
I got pregnant at 16 and was told “I would never be anything”. I dropped out of HS in my junior year and had my daughter at 17. I had no idea how I could support her. 2/
When I was pregnant I saw a newspaper story about the local LVN program. The story said most of the graduates were poor, first gen, minoritized ppl. There was a photo of the class. They were my ppl. 3/

Astronaut, black belt, and saxophonist, Ronald E. McNair served as inspiration and patron to thousands of first-generation students. We'll be diving in on his history and his namesake TRIO postbaccalaureate program.

More in thread⬇️ #BHM #firstgen #TRIOWorks /1 Ronald E. McNair
Ronald Erwin McNair was born 10/21/1950 in the small town of Lake City, SC. Even at an early age, he valued his education. Carl McNair recalled when his brother refused to leave the segregated library, obstinate in his pursuit of knowledge. /2
The story even inspired a children’s book, and decades later, the library is now named after him. /3 The cover of the children's book "Ron's Big Mission&quo

Robin Williams's death was one that got to me more than most famous people passings. Maybe it's just that I grew up with him. But there always seemed to be a sadness behind the comedy and acting that he did
It's no secret that many of the @tropicsm crew love the movie Good Will Hunting. Most of us are #firstgen college grads and Robin Williams's character seemed a lot like the kind, caring, humble teacher we all knew who wanted to help us to get through things

Who am I if I’m not a #DevelopmentalBiologist? A (long) thread. Today for #BlackInDevelopmental, I would like to tell you how I got here. I am a #FirstGen college attendee and graduate. I was raised in a single-parent household. We struggled financially when I was growing up. 1/ Image
I know what hunger feels like and have had the lights turned off. I know what it’s like to have holes in the bottom of my shoes from wear. I know what it is to love science. I have been a scientist since childhood. Collecting snails, thinking about how the world works. 2/
In spite of my parents’ inability to help me with schoolwork, I always did really well in school. I actually liked going. Partially for the normalcy it provided, partially for socializing, but mostly because I was curious and I was good at it. 3/

Unlike most PhDs, I grew up socioeconomically disadvantaged. Neither of my parents went to college #firstgen. When I was born, the WIC program paid for my formula and food for my mom. When I ate lunch in high school, I paid less than everyone else, while working a part time 1/10
job after football and wrestling practice.

When I went to college, I was fortunate to receive generous grants because my family made so little our expected contribution was $0. I still had to do work study, and many years of undergrad I worked another job on top of that. 2/10
I had to work as many hours as I could each summer to make it through the coming school year.

I had roommates and peers tell me they were "poor" because of how limited the amount of money their parents gave them each month while I was trying to decide how to make sure I 3/10

I've always, unfortunately, had a bit of a cringe reflex when asked what school I went to (a compulsary, ubiquitous question for anyone living in Brisbane) because NOONE I met during undergraduate uni had heard of my school
Only one other student from my year in high school went to my uni (@UQ_News), my undergrad science peers mostly went to inner-city Brisbane high schools or private schools
