"Will Easter bookings collapse?"Tough questions kicking off the CEO panel on #A4ESummit

In 2001, 2003, 2008, 2011 the airlines kept empty planes flying more. IAG's Willie Walsh expects that to be very different this time around. Notes that some planes are grounded already. #AvGeek #A4ESummit
Ryanair's O'Leary notes that unlike post-9/11:

We haven't reduced prices. We're not trying to encourage unnecessary travel. We'll take the hit but it will be a short-lived phenomena.

Some interesting facts on flying:
* 80% of the world's population have never flown
* In 2017, only 3% of the population flew
* Norwegian's on average take 1 domestic & 1 international flight per year
* Norway has the 5th, 8th, 16th most traveled routes in Europe!

1/
There are serious inequities in who has access to, & uses, flying.

Perhaps these inequalities are why so much attention is put on aviation emissions. In big picture, aviation is small (this figure is only emissions from oil, domestic aviation & aviation bunkers shown).

2/
Even in Norway, aviation is relatively small (again, this is just emissions from the oil sector).

That is not to say we should ignore aviation emissions, definitely not, but we tend to get worked up about small things (aviation) & ignore big things (road transport).

1/n THREAD on AVIATION TAX ✈️✈️✈️

Today a high level EU conference is happening in the Netherlands on carbon pricing and #aviationtax.

Netherlands is pushing for European countries to begin taxing aircraft fuel.

Conference live here: #Aviatax2019NL
2/n The conference is specifically for EU finance ministers and officials.

I've been told they purposely did not let in transport ministers who are notorious for being crap on climate related measures and blocking them.
3/n Taxing aviation kerosene sold in Europe would:
- cut aviation emissions by 11%
- have no net impact on jobs/the economy as a whole
- raise about €27bn every year

This is according to an EU Commission report leaked last month by @transenv
