During #BannedBooksWeek, Lt. Gov. @DanPatrick is trying to cancel our book (Forget The Alamo) again — this time w/ a show trial masquerading as a panel. He says he doesn’t care whether we show up or not, he aims to make an example of us. THREAD:
He tried to do this little trial at @UTAustin, but they wriggled out of it. So now he’s falling back to his trusted propaganda outlet, @bullockmuseum, to cancel me and my coauthors @JasStanford and @BryanBurrough houstonchronicle.com/politics/texas…
We were supposed to talk at the Bullock on July 1, but Patrick used his office to cancel our book talk just three hours before it was to begin. As much as the GOP complains about cancel culture, this was a clear First Amendment violation. thestoryoftexas.com/press/press-re…

There's a new book Forget The Alamo that tries to do to Texas Independence what the 1619 project did for the American Founding

Like the 1619 project said of the founding fathers, it claims Texans only wanted independence because Mexico wanted to end slavery and so they fought...
to keep their slaves. (As if Mexico was a paragon of moral virtue in the 1830s.)

I've been arguing with supporters of it online about the historical accuracy, but of course motives are difficult to pin down two hundred years later.
(For the 1619 project a dozen top historians  said she was dead wrong)

but I've found a very quick way to win every argument: I ask "Was it a good thing, or a bad thing, that Texas got its independence from Mexico?"

Kevin Roberts, Texas Public Policy Foundation Executive Director, who strongly defended the cancellation of a talk at the Bullock Museum about a book that reexamines the Alamo myth, blocked me yesterday. Speaking of those TPPF 990s....#ForgetTheAlamo

BANNED at the BULLOCK MUSEUM! Tonight @bryanborrough and I were supposed to talk about the craft of writing with Becka Oliver from @WritersLeague. Just hours before the even, @BullockMuseum canceled without contacting Bryan or I with an explanation. #ForgettheAlamo A thread ...
A @BullockMuseum employee says they had to cancel following a social media campaign by rightwingers and an order from the board, which includes @GovAbbott, @DanPatrickTX, @DadePhelan and @DrSchwertner. Apparently, they worry true Texas history might get out. #ForgettheAlamo
@BullockMuseum @GovAbbott @DanPatrickTX @DadePhelan @DrSchwertner After all, we’re in demand following glowing reviews from Texas history professors writing in @WSJ and @washingtonpost. Our book has been recommended by @nytimes, @vanityfair, @publishersweekly and @kirkus. We’ve done many events where historians praise our work. #ForgettheAlamo
