Five (and a half) interesting items tucked into the budget requests of Wisconsin state agencies:
1/ Downgrade marijuana possession to an ordinance violation for first and second offenses, misdemeanor for third offense. (Currently, possession is a misdemeanor for first offense, felony thereafter.) This would save the Public Defender's Office half a million dollars/yr.
2/ No tax credits for #Foxconn since they aren't fulfilling the terms of the contract. That frees up $424 million (!!) over two years in money taxpayers won't be putting in Foxconn's pocket.

What happens in the absence of State aid rules?

A couple of US examples provide some insight.

Firstly subsidy races. Each year the US public sector spends c.$100 bn persuading businesses to relocate within the US. No real benefit for US economy.…

Subsidy auctions are competitions organised by big companies to play off funding bodies and generate the biggest taxpayer funded subsidy.

State aid rules act as a backstop for the public sector to collectively refuse to go beyond set values. Bids win on merit, not money.

In 2017 Amazon launched a subsidy auction in the US for a ‘second’ headquarters.

With weak subsidy control rules over 238 cities bid against each other.

Taxpayer subsidies spiralled upwards. State aid rules would have safeguarded the taxpayer.

Inviting giants like #Apple, #Samsung & #Foxconn to set up mobile phone manufacturing facilities in India could prove to be a double edged sword for well established Indian contract manufacturers like Dixon Technologies for various reasons. Key among these are....(contd)
Key reasons for concern:
Giant scale manufacturing could mean lower costs which in turn could increase cost competitiveness and reduce margins for existing manufacturers
Government providing financial and policy help could encourage existing clientele to start their own distributed manufacturing hubs and control and future proof their supply chains

We are back from a really awesome trip to #Taiwan. In hindsight, delighted that we picked Taiwan, instead of the more common places that Indians typically go to.

Noticed a lot of things that struck us as unique in this trip, so here is a compilation #PPinTaiwan (1/n)
(2/n) How did we choose Taiwan? @AirAsia was running a sale last August when Preethika noticed a good deal, and in a spur of the moment decision, we decided to go there. Yes, the flight tickets were bought 9 months ago. #PPinTaiwan
(3/n) Firstly, getting a visa to Taiwan is pretty easy, especially if you have had a US, UK, Schengen etc visa in the last 10 years. Yes, even if it is expired, it is fine. More details here:…
Thanks to this, visa for the both of us was free #PPinTaiwan

.#Wisconsin story. The #Foxconn boondoggle, by @AustinCarr. I fear @GovEvers & his successors will be doing damage control on this Scott Walker legacy for many years to come.
More on the #Foxconn boondoggle -- I don't disagree with anything @SykesCharlie says here. We should be clear, though, that although Trump does a cameo at the end of this story, this massive corporate welfare project was a Scott Walker production.
Right from the start, Walker as governor took the view that state government was there to serve business: to cut their taxes, make labor and environmental regulations easy to live with (or dodge), and ladle out incentives with a smile in exchange for the promise of jobs.
