"WHAT'S AT STAKE when we talk about book bans is student learning and well-being," writes PEN America's @jonfreadom in @USATODAY. "Semantic gymnastics about what is or isn’t a ban is an effort to deny and distract from the problem." #BannedBooks #Reading usatoday.com/story/opinion/…
"To avoid charges of #censorship, school administrators, government officials and groups like Moms for Liberty have taken to calling the results of their efforts 'quarantine' or 'curation' – anything but 'ban.'

This debate is not new." (2/x)
"Writing about book banning for The First Amendment Encyclopedia in 2009, Susan Webb explained, 'Opponents of publications sometimes use the tactic of restricting access rather than calling for the physical removal of books.'" (3/x)

🧵On 26 May 2023, students at @NewRoadsK12 —the California elementary school @TheAmandaGorman attended—presented a reading of The Hill We Climb in response to the removal of the book from school library shelves in Miami-Dade County in Florida.
Eleven students took to the stage to read the text of The Hill We Climb to an audience of 300.

During the event, students also shared their personal thoughts on book banning and the impact Amanda Gorman’s poem has had on their lives. (2/3)

Does anyone remember that rule that the MO Sec of State proposed in the fall? The one that promoted censorship and threatened funding of public libraries? Well it was approved this week.
A thread. 🧵

If you're thinking "Didn't we protest this?" you are correct. More than 16,000 Missouri citizens weighed in, the overwhelming majority AGAINST the rule. stltoday.com/news/local/gov…
But since it's not a law, it wasn't open for a vote, and it was officially added to the Missouri Register this week despite our massive protests. It's on pg 27 of this pdf.

DeSantis called reports of book bans in #Florida “a hoax in service of trying to pollute and sexualize our children.”

Teachers in fear of felony charges carrying up to five years in prison and a $5,000 fine would beg to differ. #FreeTheBooks #Education motherjones.com/politics/2023/…
“Jean Faulk, a 65-year-old world history teacher… had carefully curated her classroom library over the years, and the task of combing through several hundred volumes seemed insurmountable. So later that day she stripped her shelves… only dictionaries and encyclopedias remained”
“In Jacksonville, a third-grade teacher penned an op-ed describing how one of her students, an avid reader, had cried after learning he couldn’t access the classroom library.” #FreedomToRead #Florida

The MO House of Representatives voted to remove all funding to public libraries because they don't want MLA to use state money in our lawsuit against govt censorship. A few notes: 🧵

#FreedomToRead
1- MLA receives no state money. At all. We are 100% volunteer. You'd think that would be an easy thing for them to find out. Maybe at a library.
#FreedomToRead
2- The lawsuit is being handled by @aclu_mo pro bono, which means no money is changing hands even if MLA were receiving state aid.

We have a slew of harmful bills coming. How do we know? Because despite best efforts to hide #HateLeg with covert titles, these bills are being presented in other states. We’ve already read them. They are unoriginal and they certainly weren’t written by Idahoans.
Senate State Affairs 8AM MST - Hearing for SB 1056 repeal of statute which clarifies who is a militia in this state. This bill should have protected us from the vigilante occupations of CdA & Sandpoint in June 2020.

Sen. Teows has an intro in this meeting too. We are watching him closely due to his pledge to make biblical laws at the Altar Church in Kootenai Co. before he was elected... We are classifying him as a Christian Nationalist going forward. #idpol #idleg legislature.idaho.gov/wp-content/upl…

As MO law moves forward with criminalizing librarians for doing their jobs, see our reply below. 🧵

First, there is the proposed rule by MO Secretary of State that "remains vague and continues to engender strife between the library and its community".
Then the new bill, HB1159, "goes beyond the rule to institute punitive damages against libraries and librarians for merely doing the work of the library".

🧵@BKLYNLibrary is teaming up with PEN America to offer a new series of virtual sessions—the #FreedomToRead Advocacy Institute—teaching teenagers how to defend books in their schools, libraries and communities. nbcconnecticut.com/news/national-…
Among the panelists will be activists like @Jack_Petocz, an 18-year-old Florida student and mobilization coordinator for @genzforchange, who tells NBC his message to attendees is: "In one of the darkest blips of Florida, I made a difference. They can as well." (2/x)
Former Oklahoma high school teacher @MsBoismier_ELA, "helped to develop the session on opposing what are frequently orchestrated campaigns to remove books. Boismier, who now works at @BKLYNlibrary, wants to show students how to use school policies to their advantage." (3/x)

A full room, standing room only, as we gavel in. Lots of chatter about this topic being taken up the week before an election. Will begin with a student performance and some notes of celebration before the first public comment section.
First speaker: if our students are experiencing it, it’s important for their literature to reflect it.
