The Democratic Party needs a messaging revamp, like now. You can't tell us "Democracy itself is on the line", even when that's true, and expect to get by on this milquetoast bs. You lost the midterms to a clown show, and its getting worse.

FACT: Republican malfeasance in our nations pandemic response killed 500,000 Americans or more. They called it a chinese bioweapon but then protested and fought every measure to save lives while stuffing their pockets with tax money.
3/

FACT: Donald Trump is a criminal who tried to overthrow the constitution in a violent coup attempt. He needs to stand trial for that, and his enablers in congress need to be REMOVED under the 14th Amendment. The excuse that "they wont let us" is trash.

1/ No one has to believe it, but it's a fact that Florida's elections have been badly rigged, and it's been happening for over 20 years. 🧵

2/ Gerrymandering is one of the ways that Republicans cheat. It allows them to have 2/3rds of the legislative seats when they only get about 50% of the votes.

3/ The gerrymandering is perfected to the local level, which entrenches corrupt political power because it removes accountability to voters.

Today, we’re changing our endorsement criteria to reflect our commitment to the freedom to vote. Going forward, we won’t endorse any U.S. senator who doesn’t support changing the Senate rules to pass voting rights legislation. Our democracy is on the line. #DeliverForVotingRights
The Senate must pass the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act. As they consider a rule change to allow passage of this legislation, we’re standing firm in our commitment to democracy. We won’t endorse any senator who doesn’t support this path forward. #FreedomToVote
The freedom to vote is a fundamental freedom—inextricably linked to reproductive freedom. NARAL’s commitment to voting rights is unwavering. We won’t endorse any senators who don’t support changing the Senate rules to pass the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act.

The U.S. Senate has finally begun debate on the #JohnLewisVotingRightsAct and #FreedomtoVoteAct.

I choose an American democracy that stands up to Trump’s Big Lie.

I choose elections free of voter suppression.

I choose protecting everyone's right to vote.
For months, Senate Democrats have been working to bring voting rights legislation like the #JohnLewisVotingRightsAct and #FreedomToVoteAct to the floor of the Senate for consideration. Each time, Republicans blocked us — they wouldn’t even let us debate the bills.
Today, we are taking action to move past Republican obstruction. The debate has begun on passing legislation to strengthen our Democracy and protect voting rights.

As the #FreedomToVote #JohnLewisVotingRightsAct makes it way to the floor today, expect a lot of disinformation and misunderstandings about what this critical democracy-saving legislation does. This thread will set the record straight. /1
2/ (1) Despite the record number of new laws this year making it harder to vote, and the persistent racial turnout gap, some claim that new voting restrictions don’t matter. @smoralesdoyle of @brennancenter buries that argument here:

Throughout my time in money-in-politics & democracy advocacy (from @FEC to Colbert to @CampaignLegal), it's become clear to me that too many Americans see our political system as rigged, corrupt, secretive & unaccountable.

This is why we need #FreedomToVoteAct + #JohnLewisVRAA.
I noted in my July 4, 2016 speech to @chq ("A Republic—If You Can Keep It!") that, at the time, 79% of Americans thought gov't is “run by a few big interests looking out for themselves" & 75% believed “corruption is widespread throughout the government”.

Both Trump & Sanders capitalized on this anger. Having supermajorities of dissatisfied Americans is a real problem for our democracy. But it does not have to be this way! The Senate can pass #FreedomToVoteAct & #JohnLewisVRAA to help make the promise of democracy real for us all.

Much attention in 2022 will be paid to what politicians are doing about democracy.

But you may be wondering: what can *I* do to support #democracy in 2022?

I put some ideas down here in a thread:
In 2022, you can #volunteer. Whether that’s helping your neighbors register to vote or becoming a poll worker, your time and talent can help advance democracy. Connecting with local groups or your local election office can help you find an opportunity you like.
Likewise, support and join groups who are advocating for voters in your state. There are many great state-based organizations, and many pro-democracy groups like @CommonCause & @LWV organize state chapters. @CampaignLegal works in partnership with state & local groups.

Playbook is ending a wild year by coming up with excuses to defend the media's failure to properly cover the GOP's outright attacks on democracy.

Make no mistake: GOP elected officials and candidates are committed to rigging, sabotaging, or overturning our elections.
Despite their claims to the contrary Dems have been lifting this issue and sounding the alarm all year. From fighting tirelessly to pass the #FreedomToVote Act to holding those accountable for almost democracy to fighting this GOP power grab.
Regardless, it's the media's 1st amendment responsibility to report the facts and to hold those who would seek to overthrow democracy accountable - they could do so with as much vigor as they covered the difference between sending an email from a work account or personal account.

While today’s lack of bipartisan support for a vote on the #FreedomToVoteAct was not an enormous surprise, it was still disappointing to see this reaction to the most significant #votingrights bill in a generation. 1/5 #FreedomToVote

This is a transformative piece of legislation that, if enacted, will increase Americans’ access to the ballot box, neutralize partisan and racial gerrymandering and increase transparency in our campaign finance system to counteract the impact of dark money secret spending. 2/5
In an era where we see politicians erecting deliberate barriers to voting, with both parties enacting partisan gerrymanders and dark money pouring into elections in as-yet-unseen amounts, this compromise legislation would provide some of the most comprehensive advances... 3/5

1/ @POTUS @JoeBiden and @VP @KamalaHarris try to convince us that we can overcome #Republican #VoterSuppression by out-organizing them (and donating more money, of course). They must have forgotten recent history, so @IndivisibleSF would like to remind them:
2/ 2000: Bush v Gore. Nationwide, Gore defeats Bush by 500,000 votes. But Bush "wins" Florida (and therefore the @WhiteHouse) by 537 votes. Prior to the election, Bush's brother, then FL Gov. Jeb Bush, purged 58,000 voters from the rolls, most of them African American.
3/ A court case and investigation by the U.S. Civil Rights Commission later concluded that thousands of voters were wrongly purged, costing Gore at least 4,752 votes — 22 times Bush’s supposed 537 vote margin of victory. #VoterSuppression

What does #ForThePeopleAct HR1 do for American voters?

This will be my hat tip to Rep John Lewis, may you rest in power Sir.

Let's advocate #GoodTrouble and #PassFTPA HR1.

#DemCastTX #CommonDefense
#Indivisible #FreshVoicesRise
Across 10 titles, this historic legislation would make it easier to vote in federal elections, end congressional gerrymandering, overhaul federal campaign finance laws,
brennancenter.org/our-work/polic…
increase safeguards against foreign interference, strengthen gov ethics rules, & more. Most reforms would be implemented for the Nov 2022 general election, with the exception of some redistricting & public financing changes that would go into effect later.
