It's a full house here despite the weather, but no one will be turned away at 30 John St/@MadeinNY for @aajanewyork panel talking #journalism, #layoffs, #freelancing, and more!
When laid off, it's ok to take your time to get your bearings, rejuvenate, focus on you. Also ok to keep sending out resumes and networking if that helps you process & grieve. #aaja #journalism #layoffs #freelancing

I know lots of journos are thinking about going/having to go freelance atm. I've come across some excellent free tools over the time I've been freelance that have made my life and work so much easier. Here's a thread, hope it's helpful.
First up is @WaveHQ. I spent ages researching the best free accounting software and this is defo it. Can't recommend it enough.

"You've got to be a go-getter, a hustler." - @shakofilm Cold pitch. Go to networking events. Have patience. Keep networkimg. A lot of work comes via networks, catch-22 tough to start w/o portfolio or connect w communities e.g. @aajanewyork #aajafreelance. #freelancing

So very briefly, on my way to this protest

One reason things don’t get coverage is that so far I’ve paid seven bucks in transit and spent two hours on buses and trains

To cover a story that I probably can’t sell anywhere.
If I don’t buy any food or coffee the entire day, I’ll still have spent twenty bucks. And this is time I’m not spending on other spec projects that only need me sitting in front of a monitor.
If I cover a multi-day story like this one, I can usually expect to wind up a hundred bucks or so out of pocket, and another three hundred opportunity cost, which is to say what I’d get paid if I’d stayed home and written a thinkpiece or two.
