🚨 New 24/7 report for Europe! 🚨

Companies moving from *annual* to *hourly* clean power matching get:

- lower emissions for them *and* system

- reduced backup needs for system

- only small cost premium for 90-95% hourly matching

- stimulation of new tech for final 5-10%

NEW REPORT: Europe can ELIMINATE reliance on Russian #NaturalGas by augmenting #REPowerEU plans w/temporary boost in coal & recalibrated gas storage.
ZERO Lab modeled 🇪🇺+🇬🇧 gas & electric grids & find several paths to secure full independence from 🇷🇺 gas: zenodo.org/record/6811676…
2. Success depends on larger reductions in gas-fired electricity generation by temporarily increasing coal use (a trend we're already seeing reuters.com/world/europe/e…), reducing electricity demand & accelerating renewable energy deployment. Multiple combos of these three can work.
3. Despite increased reliance on coal for electricity generation, all successful gas independence scenarios result in significant declines in European greenhouse gas emissions as lower gas demand offsets emissions from increased coal combustion.

This is fantastic news: today, at its 2022 Ministerial Meeting, @FBirol announced that the @IEA would be making its energy data freely available "in the interest of supporting data transparency and supporting good decision-making."

This is a major milestone in the campaign that @MBazilian, @afromusing and I - and quite a few others - helped kick off a decade ago with this paper:
econpapers.repec.org/article/eeeene…
There have been many people involved along the way. Of particular note, everyone behind @openmod #openmod, @daniel_huppmann, @nworbmot. I would like to think I gave them a modicum of useful support via my #freethemodels hashtag.

Ever wanted to run an energy system model with your own assumptions?

We've made a simplified version of our 45-node European sector-coupled model available to run online.

It includes renewables, CCS, nuclear, power, hydrogen, biomass, industry, etc.

model.energy/scenarios/
You can ask it questions like:

i) At what cost does nuclear take over (around 3-4000 EUR/kW)

ii) What happens if we restrict power or hydrogen grid (costs go up!)

iii) What happens if we relax restriction on carbon sequestration from 200 MtCO2/a (costs go down!)
See scenarios others have run here:

Submit your own scenarios here (takes several minutes):

#Italy can cut its #CO2 emissions by up to 97% and this can lead to *lower* #energy prices.

#EnergyScope is an #optimization model looking at the whole-energy system, including #electricity, #heating and #transport.

We present a new version of the model and propose it to devise deep #decarbonization scenarios for #Italy, like this one!

How does a 97% decarbonized Italy look like?

1/ Hi #energytwitter, I'm excited to share my thoughts on the changing role of #electricity #storage in the #renewable #energy transition in my new @Joule_CP Commentary! @CellPressNews 🔋

doi.org/10.1016/j.joul…

A little thread ⬇️
2/ I discuss three strands of the literature, and illustrate how the main driver for (bulk) electricity storage deployment shifts from taking up renewable surplus generation to supplying peak residual load when the renewable share increases (and what changes with sector coupling)
3/ I do so with residual load duration curves (RLDC) from a stylized #opensource model. The RL in one hour is the electric load during this hour, minus the potential generation of variable renewables. A RLDC sorts all hourly RL values of a full year in descending order🤓

Yesterday @teri released a new report on the grid integration of wind and solar in India.
This thread summarizes some of the findings, but there is a lot more available in the report and results data, which is freely available for download (links at the end of this thread!)

We used a unit commitment and dispatch model to study the operation of the power system:
- all generating units in India
- 8760 hours of the year (and 15 min blocks for some periods).
- all states with unique demand and supply profiles
- 7 unique scenarios & 4 sensitivities
3/n
In all scenarios, the model could meet demand with negligible levels of unserved load, and acceptable levels of curtailment.👇
Wind and solar curtailment peaked at 4% in the High Renewables Scenario, without additional flexibility measures. Image

In 2017, assuming an energy system running on 100% renewables (solar, wind and hydro) was considered frivolous by most 'experts'.

In 2017 @mzjacobson was strongly condemned after he quantified a possible 100% RE route for the USA.

But in 2018 the dam broke!
(thread)
The first ideas to calculate 100% RE are probably from 1975 or so.
I vividly remenber Gregor Czisch his 2005 100% RE model. It contributed to my first simple 100% RE calculations and my evaluations of the IEA.
But it was all fringe.
In retrospect, I consider 2017 the year the old guard made it's last stance (in academia).

@mzjacobson was denounced as a heretical quack for proposing a 100% RE scenario pnas.org/content/114/26…

And a new meta study of 100% RE studies concluded 100% RE was unfeasable.
