HONORED: I didn't have @RepRaskin "Jamie Raskin speaks before Congress on why I was locked up in jail" on my 2022 bingo card, but hey, I appreciate it. This is important. 🧵
In 1990 and 1991, I went to jail four different times to protect confidential sources while working as a TV reporter.
The last time I went to jail for nearly two weeks while the Supreme Court considered my case, and was only spared a long sentence when my source moved from Texas to California, and no longer fearing for her life, came forward.

Today XR published its own tabloid newspaper (read all about it at issuu.com/mediattt/docs/…).

The kind of plans "climate champion" @JohnKerry is discussing publicly could lead to 3-4°C of heating - @KevinClimate.

That means the collapse of civilisation. Radical evil. Heard any journalists pointing that out to Kerry?

Limited heating to 1.5°C is still possible according to @JRockstrom, but requires a Herculean response.

So you'd think the media would be pressing for that every day right? Because it's now clear that anything less will be catastrophic.

The world has just 6.5 years to reach net-zero carbon emissions to have any chance of avoiding the most dangerous global temperature rise – above 1.5°C.
The UK government has given itself 30 years.

The government is miles off even hitting its first major milestone for its net-zero target – a 68% reduction in emissions by 2030.
At best, they will miss this target by over 25%.

Worse still, the government is cooking the books – and us! They aren’t counting the massive UK emissions from international air travel, shipping, and goods that we import, which make up almost half (43%) of our annual emissions.

Planning to be out protesting at #LondonTransPride #BatleyandSpen or #FreeThePress today? Here’s our top legal tips to remember - we need you to learn your rights & share these key messages by retweeting! (THREAD)
1. NO COMMENT! You’re usually not required to answer police questions, so don’t. - Say ‘no comment’. This includes ‘friendly chats’, on the streets, in a police van & during interview. PLOs (officers in blue bibs) are trained intelligence gatherers - remember ‘NO COMMENT’
2. NO PERSONAL DETAILS! You DON’T legally have to give personal details when you’re being stopped & searched & you usually don’t need to give personal details to police anyway

Why are @metpoliceuk concerned by an art installation @antepavilion? Under what powers are they arresting employees of an art space with no connection to xr? This is a vast overreach of police powers, and suppression of freedom of expression. #Art #Arrests

After the printworks blockade in sept 2020 the bamboo tension structures were deemed prize winning by architecture critic @PhinHarper saying they "recall the sustainable motives of high-tech architecture" in this @dezeen article:

In the US, hedge funds or private equity firms control half of all US daily newspapers, while in Britain, three billionaire families control nearly 70% of the national newspaper industry.

GB News secured £60 million in funding: £20 million came from US media company Discovery, & the rest came from Brextremist hedge fund manager Paul Marshall, & the Dubai-based private investment firm Legatum.

How very patriotic. 🇬🇧 NOT.

Legatum funds the dodgy London-based free-market disaster-capitalist think-tank 'Legatum Institute', which in 2017 formed the 'Special Trade Commission', headed by Shanker Singham, who along with Matthew Elliott left in 2018 to take his team to the IEA.

Dear @pritipatel,
What led to your phone call to Herts police chief 90mins after we arrived at Murdoch's Newsprinters for our peaceful protest in September?

And what did you discuss with Murdoch in your private meeting 10 days after the protest?

Asking for a friend.
Thanks x

BREAKING NEWS [thread]

Today a senior officer has testified in court that after approx 90mins of our printworks protest, Priti Patel & Boris Johnson were taking an active interest

Just after midnight on 4th September 2020, the Home Sec rang the Hertfordshire Chief Constable...
We do not know what was discussed, other than there was pressure to move the protest ASAP

This informed the police behaviour;
👉protestors had stated from the start that they would leave willingly at 11am
👉the protestors on the roof of the vans & suspended in the bamboo structures, came down at 11am on the dot to be arrested
👉at this point, the 2 vans and 2 8metre tall tensegrity structures were still in the road (the protest could have continued for many more hours)

During a global health pandemic, when journalism is more important than ever, governments around the world are imprisoning a record number of journalists, 274, dozens on #FakeNews charges, most on anti-state and terrorism charges & many without charges cpj.org/reports/2020/1…
This is the 5th consecutive year of record highs with #China #Turkey #Egypt and #SaudiArabia once again topping this ignoble list of the world's leading jailers of journalists. In Iran, 15 journalists were imprisoned on Dec 1, and on Dec 12 one of them #Roohollah_Zam was executed
Thirty-six journalists (13%) of those in prison are female. Some covered women’s rights in #Iran #SaudiArabia others while covering protests in #Belarus. Although women may be underrepresented among journalists in jail, they're overrepresented in experiencing online harassment.

Press freedom is hanging by a thread in Britain, but no one is talking about it. On Wednesday, the House of Commons will vote on the Data Protection Bill, and Labour MPs have added amendments to it that would effectively end 300 years of press freedom in Britain 1/10
Since the Leveson Inquiry, journalists have been hauled before courts on spurious charges only to be acquitted. A state-approved regulator, Impress, has been set up for the first time since 1695. But no newspaper -- even those that cheered on Leveson -- will sign up to it. 2/10
So the press-regulation lobby has been pushing for Section 40, a law that would force all publications to sign up to a state-backed regulator. If they refuse, as they should, they’d be required to pay the legal costs of any case brought against them, even if they win. 3/10
