I was head hunted for my 1st NGO job, not because I was looking, but it was based on 2 recommendations from volunteer work.

Volunteering is one way to get an NGO job, to build your network, to develop skills, build experience and to grow your career.

A thread

Some jobs are not advertised, but you are invited to apply based on referrals.

My first paid NGO job was with KAF-Zim as a Programme Officer in 2002. The Res Rep asked for referrals from his network, 2 leaders I have volunteered for, separately recommended me for the interview.
At any stage in your career, you will not have the required skills or experience from paid wok, you can develop this from volunteer work.

I learnt program design and coordination from volunteer positions I held in high school, college and even now 20 years into NGO global work.

Excited that our paper: "Measuring the Occupational Impact of AI: Tasks, Cognitive Abilities and AI Benchmarks" has been published in Journal of Artificial Intelligence Research (@JAIR_Editor).

Here's a thread (1/10)
#EconTwitter #HUMAINT #futureofwork…
The paper is the result of truly interdisciplinary work with sociologist Enrique Fernández-Macías, computer scientists @NandoMartinezP , @emiliagogu and José Hernández-Orallo, and economists Annarosa Pesole and me. Also, help from @CharisiVicky, HRI researcher. (2/10)
We develop a framework with which we can measure the exposure of occupations to AI. Note: we use the term "exposure" not "substitution" to avoid feeding into that fear-mongering narrative of "robots stealing our jobs". (3/10)

Metis is very proud to announce a new strategic partnership with @opolis, a forward-thinking, member-owned Digital Employment Cooperative for independent workers.

To understand this partnership and how both Opolis & $METIS operate, it's time for a thread about the #FutureofWork
Around the world, independent/gig workers have struggled to gain the rights and protections afforded to salaried employees. We see this with Uber drivers, farmers, and countless other kinds of workers.
Opolis aims to change that. Using the structure of its digital employment cooperative and its $WORK token, Opolis will provide payroll services, health benefits, and much more for independent workers, building an ownership economy for the Web 3.0 world.

Al mismo tiempo, la gente está luchando para adaptase. Y se necesita encontrar nuevas formas para ayudarlos (a los casados les "iría mejor" que los solteros en la pandemia).

How Organizational Network Analysis Can Increase Team Collaboration

latest from Workforce Futurist Newsletter is part of a series on ‘The New Technology of Teams’

This article is a collaboration with @fmarinmayer and @CTS_ONA (1/8)
All great work happens in teams.

Yet many management and HR processes are designed around the individual.

We need new approaches, and tools, to support successful teams.

#Leadership @VIDOInterVac #HRTech #CHRO
How is Teamwork Changing?

There's an increasingly decentralized workforce as many people work outside of organizational structures.

These workers are not working in isolation but forming new teams.

🧵What are the ILO and the EU doing to address the #digitaltransformation of work? In this new article @n_potocka and I examine a set of core initiatives such as the ILO’s Centenary Declaration on the #FutureOfWork and the EU Pillar of #SocialRights >
We review the social acquis of both institutions and concentrate on the key analogies. They advocate towards building an adaptable labour market and securing the rights of non-standard workers, who are often excluded from the scope of labour and social protection
Over the last years, these institutions have acknowledged the vast potential brought about by technological progress, but also the urgency to ‘correct’ negative externalities that lead to profound vulnerabilities, social exclusion, and political resentment

It's not a #covid #recession, it's a #shecession. Thread up, baby --- >
A majority of the jobs lost in the early stages of COVID were held by women, especially in industries like hospitality. As a result, the term “she-cession” was coined. I think we all intuitively realize that COVID was going to be worse for women overall, and
especially working moms — and then most school districts went to a confusing mix of virtual and hybrid in-person, which made it doubly hard for moms of school-aged children, who normally bear that burden. Here’s something from Wharton about this whole topic,

We spend billions per year on the #Leadership industry.
But uh, ahem, er … what exactly are we getting out of it, especially at this moment? A thread --- >
No one has exact figures on the “size” of the global leadership industry, or leadership development market, or whatever you prefer to call it. I have seen numbers from $14B to $24B to $366B (wow) back down to $44B. I honestly don’t think people know what is even involved in these
big numbers. I would guess we are talking mostly about books, speeches (speaker fees?), training modules, training programs, and the like. I’d speculate (but don’t know) that a huge chunk of that is book publishing. A book on every leadership angle has seemingly been written.

Dear #MedTwitter please, please, if you are a licensed medical professional and/or in school to be, do NOT delete your tweets or comply with anyone telling you to do so. It will harm you far more than leaving them up and explaining. Nothing is ever deleted. Can be used in court.
When I was at Harvard Med School and at an esteemed children's hospital, a case against an esteemed professor, that NO lawyer would touch cuz this was someone who had WRITTEN the textbooks and trained every expert, was won ..based on "a document was deleted" - creating suspicion
"Sunlight is the best disinfectant" you will hear me say OVER and OVER - wins & losses *should* be on data/standards but unfortunately wins & losses are in the court of public opinion. So be reliable, credible, and trustworthy. Transparency is one way to achieve that reputation.

Even though I haven't been a big fan of Twitter threads so far, a lot of people I know have made 100-tweet threads for @threadapalooza so I thought I'll give it a try as well. I will start with #APIs and hopefully end up connecting them with the #FutureOfWork. Let's go ...

First of all, when I talk about #APIs, I mean HTTP-based interfaces connecting apps and backend servers as well as different services with each other. For now, the technical details, such as whether they use REST, GraphQL, gRPC etc., shall not matter. (1/100)
When humans interact with computers they require a user interface (UI), and when machines interact with each other they need application programming interfaces (APIs). At the end of the day, however, these have to be implemented by humans. Good #APIDesign considers both. (2/100)

This is the second time in 24 hours the focus has been in being polite from within #WIM #PROWD

Traits I value:
visionary, innovative
being accurate
pro-mental health

Polite is a subjective term, often means aligning w/ status quo. Polite people quietly avoid bullies.
Yes, @KamalaHarris is able to smile through her debates and adhere to expected gender norms and avoid any hint of the racist trope of “angry” as a Black woman. But is that really what makes her qualified? Or is it a career worth of experience as well as times she persisted?
What are our priorities? In a busy world, we will only have a chance to achieve 3-5 max. If we put polite and being on time in those top 3-5, where does addressing safety, quality, inequity, mental health fall? Are we judging someone on timeliness who may have chronic illness?

In 2005, I set up a business selling CDs, namely mixtape CDs after graduating from Uni.

In 2006, my home was raided & my business was stopped. They said the CDs I was selling were in breach of copyright.
It was a complete shock as the exact same CDs I was selling were prevalent on most high streets and supermarkets. They were selling in their thousands in places such as #Tesco & #HMV. And #Woolworths were the actual UK Distributor of these CDs.
