Exoskeletons in construction:

Nice article posted to the Associated Builders & Contractors of Wisconsin website & co-written by Prof. Zhenhua Zhu from UW-Madison & Mariya Sorenson, a construction manager with M.A. Mortenson.

They highlight 3 potential broad impacts of exos: Image
1. Improving worker safety & fostering a better safety culture in the construction industry.

Exoskeletons can reduce fatigue, muscle strain & wear-and-tear injuries, which could lead to substantial cost savings.
2. Alleviating the shortage of skilled construction workers.

Exoskeletons could help extend careers & attract candidates who might otherwise be deterred by physically demanding jobs.

#RiseOfAI @Riseof_AI starts with a chatGPT piped to text-to-video keynote. @bootstrappingme says 99% of people can't spot that this is not a person. Are there stats about this? I had about 0.2 seconds of doubt, but I'm sure there's better text to speech out there now.
Fabian did a great (incl. funny) job of complying with joanna-bryson.blogspot.com/2018/11/puttin… and fighting the #futureOfWork misinfo, but repeats the "#AIAct would have blocked #chatGPT" US west-coast talking point. Has someone written a takedown of that yet? #AIEthics @meerihaataja * #riseofai
** The GDPR though should already have blocked #chatGPT hoovering up our data for @OpenAI / @Microsoft for free, is that already getting investigated for prosecution? Anyone? #DSA #AIReguation #digitalGovernance #RiseOfAI

1/ 🚀 #AutoGPT is trending today, but what's the hype all about? Let's unpack these AI game-changers, explore their potential, and recognize their limitations. Thread👇 #HypeVsReality
2/ 🎯 AutoGPTs are AI agents that can perform tasks autonomously, with little to no human intervention. They can even chain multiple GPT-4s together to work on different tasks simultaneously! However, they can get stuck & may need human help. #AutonomousAI #GPT4
3/ 🌟 Two main models dominate the AutoGPT landscape: BabyAGI by @yoheinakajima & AutoGPT by @SigGravitas. They're trending on GitHub and attracting devs worldwide. Don't forget @asimdotshrestha's AgentGPT, which runs in-browser!

🤖🛑 Hitting the breaks on AI?

(1) Alignment worries: perhaps legit. But don't have much to say.
(2) Job automation concerns: LLMs ≠ robots. Economic arguments for slowing down automation are much weaker for LLMs.

Why? Let's dive in! #EconTwitter #FutureOfWork #AI #ChatGPT
Economists have put forth two main arguments for slowing down technologies that automate jobs and displace workers. The first is based on redistributive considerations. The second is based on efficiency considerations.
In a nutshell, the redistributive rationale is as follows. If automation displaces workers who are relatively poor, then this increases inequality. Absent other tools to directly redistribute (e.g., transfers to workers) a government should curb automation to reduce inequality.

The last time we saw something of this magnitude was during the Industrial Revolution when we invented machines to do work instead of horses, people, and manual labor. #IndustrialRevolution #technology #innovation

👀💭 Have you ever wondered where all the talented people are and what they're up to?🤔

A super insightful take by @eladgil on talent and human capital flow on @aarthir & @sriramk podcast:

🧐Society has shifted its allocation of people to certain industries and it's affecting the average IQ in different fields over time.

🤔What does this mean for society as a whole? How should we reward certain professions to attract human capital back to fields that are lacking?
💡 A spread of smart people throughout society is crucial for all sorts of functions.

🚨 But, imagine if every single smart person was at Google. That would be really bad for society! 🤯

The new space is in co-creation.

Where employees and leaders meet is in a different place. Instead of having leaders hand down policies, or offer their solutions in a controlled, centralized way, more breakthroughs will happen if they open an in-meeting...
...or an #asynchronous discussion with their team on how to make internal processes optimal for everyone.

Somebody asked me the other day, “What would you do if you were running your first physical meeting of your team after years of #remoteworking?” And I said...
“Well, why don't we ask that?” Like, why don't we open up a mural board, a #crowdsourced whiteboard, and ask that question? And let's hear suggestions. Let's co-create how we're going to use physical space with this first meeting as the first pilot.

My 2022 Year in Review and look ahead to 2023…

An unusual year of ups + downs that took my research agenda to unexpected places.

Yet the result was invaluable + ended up taking my work to useful new places.

A longish 🧵 on #cio #cloud #digitaltransformation #FutureOfWork. 1/x
First up is my detailed analysis titled “The #Cloud Reaches an Inflection Point for the #CIO in 2022.” It remains very pertinent reading.

Written as the cloud industry reached an early maturity point, it highlighted a top hot issue: Complexity

Then I took a deep dive into #decentralization, perhaps one of the most significant generational revolutions of our era:

What is #Web3 and Why It Matters

Regardless of what happens to #crypto, the underlying tech esp. #blockchain, is an inflection.

@RishiSunak the NHS doesn’t need more money … it needs to better manage/better spend the money it has.

@DHSCgovuk planned spend for 2021/22 on England = £190.3bn - majority (£136bn) passed to NHS England & NHS Improvement for spending on health services… 💰
2/7
How is that not enough for England’s 56m population? 🤯

c.40% of this is spent on treating preventable conditions! Yet the NHS fails to execute a strategy that truly prioritises prevention… 🤦🏽‍♂️
3/7
Take CVD as an example: economic analysis suggests that if all detected individuals were managed according to NICE guidelines, the total saving would be £61bn & 5.2m CVD cases prevented!

The amount of waste in public services is criminal… 🗑

Really happy with our new paper—"The Moralization of Effort"—now out in JEP:G. The paper shows how people find the expenditure of effort morally good, even when the effort produces nothing of economic value.
🧵
psycnet.apa.org/record/2022-85… Image
This was a real labor of love, years in the making, with 5 rounds of revisions. It was hard work, especially for 1st author & newly-minted PhD @JaredCelniker. The paper shows that this kind of effort makes people see Jared as more moral, and a more attractive cooperation partner
If there are 2 ppl producing the same number of widgets, of the same quality, but one of them requires less effort to do so, this low effort person is seen as ⬆️competent, but ⬇️moral. Further, he is less like to be chosen as a partner in a trust game than the high effort person Image

First, let's set the scene with a couple of key facts:

👉 In the UK alone, it is estimated that 1 in 5 people have a disability

👉 80% of those people have an invisible disability

👉 The UK workforce contains over 4.4m disabled people

Okay, now onto the bad stuff👇
#DYK that almost half of disabled people in the UK are unemployed?

By December of 2021, the percentage of disabled people who are either unemployed or economically inactive had risen to 47.7%
