🚨BREAKING: preliminary data from an ongoing clinical study of #remdesivir showed that in 113 patients with severe #COVID19:

▶️Fever/symptoms rapidly improved
▶️Most discharged within 6 days
▶️2 died (1.8%), much less than expected for severe #COVID19

#Remdesivir is being studied in 2 clinical trials:

1⃣severe #COVID19 study of 2,400 patients from 152 sites all over the world
2⃣moderate #COVID19 study of 1,600 patients in 169 sites.

Results for the first 400 patients in the "severe" study are expected later this month.😃
I spent nearly a decade developing the closely related #galidesivir (BCX4430, we published in @nature) that is also being tested in #COVID19 patients.

These drugs decrease viral replication by blocking the virus' ability to make new RNA.

🚨BREAKING: #remdesivir shows encouraging preliminary results for #COVID19:

▶️68% (36 of 53 patients) had improvement in oxygen support; only 15% worsened
▶️57% (17 of 30) on ventilators taken OFF
▶️3 of 4 on ECMO (*extremely* ill) taken OFF

No new safety signals, but 13% of these severely ill #COVID19 patients died.

These preliminary results from this compassionate-use study need to be confirmed in placebo-controlled trials –but these are already underway!😃

Another antiviral drug with the same mechanism of action (#galidesivir) is also being studied in a well designed, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial.

The scientists are ON it.😃

⚠️Good news! BioCryst launched a clinical trial of its antiviral #galidesivir in patients with #COVID19.

Galidesivir has broad-spectrum activity in vitro against >20 RNA viruses, including #Ebola, MERS and #SARS (closely related to this #coronavirus).😃

#Galidesivir works similarly to #favipiravir (approved in #Japan/showed efficacy against #COVID19) & #remdesivir.

The drugs block the virus’ ability to make RNA copies needed for new viral particles, so it’s plausible they'll work against #coronavirus.🤞🏼
I spent years working on #galidesivir (BCX4430); we published our findings in @nature.

Like #SARS, #Ebola & influenza, the new #coronavirus uses RNA as its genetic code. Blocking the ability to copy RNA is an effective approach against other RNA viruses😃
