Image

Australia has for years been battling to keep the Great Barrier Reef off the “in danger” list. On June 22, 2021, a UN committee recommended that the GBR should be added to a list of “in danger” World Heritage Sites.

The #GBR is 2,300 km long and extends across 346,000 sq. km. area, hosting an assemblage of fishes and invertebrates in the reefs, sharks, rays, anemones and myriad other forms all of which need a delicate ecological balance to thrive.

#GBR won a place on the World Heritage List under the World Heritage Convention, 1972, as it has outstanding universal value. As a fabled wonder of the natural world, Australia’s GBR and its diversity of #marine life found a place on UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 1981.

This weekend @HuskerFBNation announced that they would wear helmet stickers to honor George Flippin, the team’s first Black player (1891-94, pic below is the ‘91 team)

It’s good to honor Flippin, but we should also take an honest look at what his time at Nebraska was like

🧵
Flippin was one of several Black athletes at PWIs in the late 19c, so he wasn’t unprecedented. But he was unusual.

Flippin’s appearances on the 1891 team earned positive press from Omaha (left) and Iowa’s student newspaper (right), which described him as the team’s best player
As for his style of play, these descriptions from Nebraska sources provide a nice glimpse. The game back then was more physical, as the forward pass wasn’t legal yet. Having someone who could shake off would-be tacklers and move the line forward was essential.

(1/n) This comment and our reply on our #Nature paper looking at fish behaviour and #oceanacidification has gotten a lot attention. Unfortunately, some of it has been very negative and unprofessional. Here’s my POV.
(2/n) First, this is a topic that folks feel passionate about. That’s great, and I’m glad the paper and both comments have sparked discussion. This is a healthy part of the scientific process and how we progress as a community.
(3/n) However, devolving into name calling and mud-slinging helps nothing, and is harmful esp to those of us without permanent positions on all sides. We don’t always have to agree scientifically, but please let’s be civil and respectful.

Nebraska leaves the Big Ten, signs a streaming deal with Amazon -- giving them access to the program a la 'Hard Knocks' -- and giving NU a direct & unprecedented pipeline to proper medical supplies and merch distribution (I have no idea how this actually works, so bear with me).
They show a fully televised scrimmage, a 7-on-7s contest, and a skills challenge on consecutive weekends that enable the team to showcase themselves and enable Amazon to have an "Adults Only", swear-words/drinking encouraged broadcast of a game against Iowa after a few weeks.
They also feature Scott Frost and Mario Verduzco going one-on-one in both chess and beer pong. Iowa gets a $2,000,000 check for participating and Nebraska makes bank.

Welcome to the #EnvironmentalCampaign archive. This story is about the long running Hinchinbrook campaign to stop a marina/hotel development at Oyster Point near the #GreatBarrierReef.
It began with Keith William’s proposal to create a 250 berth marina, 1,500 dwelling canal estate and a resort with ‘million’ dollar ocean views, requiring the removal of mangroves and dredging for a marina and canal.
Friends of Hinchinbrook (FoH) formed to 1993 to stop the development. The mangrove trees were protected by small groups of activists on 24 hour rosters.Despite being designed as unsuitable for a boat habour in 1977, in 1994 the project was approved.

1/ In @OWHnews @OWHopinion this morning, @DrJRMarcelin & I call for racial/ethnic #COVID19 data reporting in Nebraska.

We are currently the ONLY state reporting ZERO state-level demographics. Short thread about why this is a #HealthEquity nightmare 🧵👇🏾

omaha.com/opinion/midlan…
2/ @AmerMedicalAssn's Center for Health Equity has followed state demographic reporting. 46 states currently report race/ethnicity, 49 report age, and 48 report gender.

This is a map on which #GoBigRed #GBR has a less than ideal meaning for Nebraska.

3/ Being a flyover state doesn't render us immune to inequity. Data from Douglas County (includes most of Omaha) shows disproportionate case incidence among Hispanic, Black, and Asian patients despite our county being ~70% non-Hispanic & White...
