1. ‘The Islamic Republic vs. Iran.’

Thanks to @OsloFF and @HRF for the opportunity to highlight Iran’s #WomanLifeFreedom revolution, and discuss a decades-long theocracy that has hijacked a multi-millennial civilization. A few key takeaways 🧵
#MahsaAmini #KatayounRiahi
2. Iranian women are among the very few in the world who have less rights than their grandmothers did five decades ago. #WomanLifeFreedom #GenderApartheid
3. #MahsaAmini’s murder galvanized a broad-based opposition to the Islamic Republic. This terrifies a regime that has stayed in power through a policy of ‘divide and oppress.’ #WomanLifeFreedom

Today marks the release of an important new report on Afghanistan by @SR_Afghanistan and the @UN working group on discrimination against women and girls. You can--and should--read the full report here: ohchr.org/en/documents/c…
@SR_Afghanistan @UN This is an important acknowledgement of how shutting women out of key discussions about Afghanistan's future, in violation of commitments made under UN Security Council resolution 1325, helped create this hell for women and girls: Image
"Afghanistan is afflicted by poverty & food insecurity, with more than 2/3 of its people in need of urgent humanitarian assistance. Sustained restrictive policies on women’s education & work...will further harm the economy & people’s survival, w/particular impact on women."

This is a thread about why Afghan women should be invited to a meeting the @UN @antonioguterres will host next week about Afghanistan.

The Taliban, after seizing power in Aug 2021, stripped women/girls of most rights. Women fought back. #GenderApartheid
Next week the UN will convene an important meeting to discuss what the international community should do about the crisis in Afghanistan and what the future holds for the country, and for the Taliban. No Afghan women are invited. reuters.com/world/asia-pac…
Afghan women have asked urgently to be allowed to attend.

“We have asked for just one hour of this two-day meeting. But we have been told it is not possible.” passblue.com/2023/04/25/dis…

Which experts should we be listening to in the increasingly heated debate about whether the Taliban should be recognized? #GenderApartheid (spoiler: how about we listen to the Afghan women who are risking their lives to protest for their rights)
Should we listen to men writing for think tanks on the other side of the world?
Should we listen to diplomats and politicians from the tiny handful of countries that recognized the Taliban the last time they were in power?

On #IWD2023, I share 3 Fact Sheets on #GenderApartheid I wrote w @UMichLaw student Amulya Vadapalli based on bit.ly/3ZOOHNk:

1)What is Gender Apartheid (GA)?
2)Added Value of Apartheid Approach
3) GA in #Afghanistan

Stand w #Afghan Women

"#GenderApartheid is the systematic segregation of the sexes imposed through law & policy as a governing ideology. In this construct, segregation may be accompanied by the total exclusion of women as in Taliban #Afghanistan, the
paradigmatic example of gender apartheid"
#IWD2023
"The apartheid framework highlights the duty of the international community and of other states to take concerted, effective action to terminate the
practice."

#GenderApartheid

Here’s a quick thread on the term #GenderApartheid, as it pertains to Afghanistan. Afghan feminists like @Hmosadiq have been using this term since at least the fall of 2021, to describe the Taliban’s comprehensive and systematic roll back of women rights. afghandiaspora.net/gender-aparthe…
In August 2022, @karimabennoune, a law professor and former special rapporteur, published an important article about #GenderApartheid in Afghanistan. She will publish a longer and more detailed version of this article in November 2022. justsecurity.org/82651/the-best…

“Their mother told detectives the day before the bodies were discovered, she received a call from an official at the Saudi Arabian Embassy, ordering the family to leave the U.S. because her daughters had applied for political asylum, New York police said” apnews.com/094178ff98c34d…
How did the #Saudi embassy know the sisters had applied for aayuum?
Whoever told the #Saudi embassy that Rotana and Tala has applied for asylum jeopardized their lives. There is a reason - a danger they are escaping - that someone applies for asylum. When you tell the embassy of their country of origin, you further endanger them.

The bodies of 2 sisters from #Saudi Arabia were found in Hudson river, bound together by duct tape at their waists & ankles. Rotana Farea, 22, & Tala Farea, 16 “had recently requested asylum in the United States.” nytimes.com/2018/10/29/nyr… h/t @rerutled
👆🏽reminded me of #Saudi woman Dina Lasloom, who tried to escape forced marriage by going to #Australia for asylum but was detained at Manila airport until uncles came, beat her, tied mouth, arms, legs w/duct tape & dragged her onto plane home google.com/amp/s/www.nyti… #GenderApartheid
Death of 2 #Saudi sisters is highly suspicious. I hope coroner’s report is issued soon. I lived in Saudi Arabia as a teenager & for past 16yrs have been writing about #genderaprtheid in Saudi Arabia. Treatment of women is outrageous. And too often ignored or diminished.
