In all places, particularly, in #Pakistan, extremely important for mothers, female role models & #HeforShe men to encourage young women and girls to be expressive, out of box, push boundaries, and never go silent.

Admire you on so many levels @ayesha_mian1

The only way to advocate for the voiceless and marginalized is to use any source of privilege one may have to create space, amplify others, and be willing to be told one is “too much” in myriad ways. What is the standard to measure too much, tho? If measure is status quo...
Who designed the metrics of “just right” vs “too much” and who defined “good” vs “bad”?

What gender, ethnicity/tribe, religion, etc wrote “the rules” - overt & unspoken?

What cultural triggers are there to invoke, anger, disgust, shame?

Who is in/out group?

Are others silent?

A #SaveUNSWEarlyYears thread about the challenges of raising a family on the other side of the world from home, the importance of #EarlyYearsExcellence, and musings on #GenderEquity 👇 1/12
6.5 years ago, @ctrnm and I moved halfway around the world so that I could take up an exciting faculty position in @UNSWScience. Moving so far from friends and family is hard, but @UNSW had a good vibe and I was impressed by the feeling of collegiality from top to bottom. 2/12
A couple of years later, we started our family. @UNSW Early Years had an amazing reputation but was known for being incredibly hard to get into. We joined the waiting list early and felt like we'd won the lottery when we got a place for our daughter at Kanga's House. 3/12

Umbereen S Nehal MD MPH: who is this person? Several people have been asking

A thread

Where am I from? Hooboy.
Let’s say, citizen of the world, human ping pong ball. Third culture kid. Genetic mutt

Born: 🇺🇸
🇵🇰 parents - when my parents born colonial rule, pre-Pakistan
To thoroughly annoy my Twitter bestie, @DrvanTilburg

Am an ENFP - a cross between Snoopy, Robin Willians, Ellen Degeneres, Dr. Seuss, Charles Dickens, Upton Sinclair

I border on ENTP - love new info and love to challenge in order to break through barriers or limitations
My great-grandfather was given title "Khan Bahadur" (brave). As a judge, a brown man under Colonial rule, he threw the book at a British attorney. "Learn the law" if in his courtroom. Hence my stiff moral backbone

My mom & me:

(She loves this song)

Wow!! One of the most outstanding books I’ve ever read.

Sand Talk: How #IndigenousThinking can save the World

A great recommendation for these days!!

Thanks Tyson Yunkaporta. Your book is a gem to be discovered: #wisdom #values

A few years ago, I wrote a post about the #philosophy of Good Living or Living Well from Indigenous People
academia.edu/6528305/_Good_…

I talked about #biomimicry, learning from Nature with humility, and then we could also learn from the wisdom of indigenous people
I've decided to start a month-long project where I'll tweet a “wise” tip about "Sand Talk" every day during April. 30/30

#WiseBoomerang #1 This will be the 1st one.
It's about #humility the antonymous of #hubris. #Communication #DialogicalEthics #Connectedness

Yesterday I visited the cafe where my brother works. His work is a big deal. Because he has an #IntellectualDisability #DevelopmentalDisability and #InclusiveEmployment is ridiculously hard to find. We talk a lot on #MedTwitter about being #Inclusive. 1/
I am part of those conversations. They usually centre around #GenderEquity, sometimes #Antiracism, occasionally #LGBTQ+ rights, and once in a while #Disability - but under that term I almost never hear about #DevelopmentalDisability, or more importantly, how we - physicians 2/
members of society with privilege, including for many of us, our own businesses (yes, for those of you in North America, your medicine practice is run as a small business), could be actively supporting truly #InclusiveEmployment. My brother has had many jobs. Almost none of 3/

Thread on how #inclusion, or lack thereof, affects #Wellbeing:

⚠️: upcoming #vulnerability moment

Do you ever feel Iike you don’t belong in the spaces you occupy?
I do.
The feeling is isolating & discouraging.

The reasons why are complex, complicated. /1
#medtwitter #burnout
I will confess here that being in #dermatology and in #academia magnifies these feelings.

Being courageous, stepping outside comfort zones, making your voice heard... it’s good, necessary, but the way you’re perceived and received matters. It has impact.

It’s complicated.
/2
The cycle of self-confidence can be a positive or negative one, and often starts early in youth, affected by things such as parental upbringing, privilege, etc.

That cycle can build on itself, and have huge implications for one’s professional and personal wellbeing.

1/ What follows is the story of why I will not be attending #MPSA2020. Here, I discuss the aftermath of my #MeTooPoliSci disclosure, which I discussed last year: bit.ly/GillMeToo. The #thread is long, so please bear with me. #MPSAfail
2/ When I first saw the editorial statement on the @AJPS_Editor website in April 2018, I was devastated. In that statement, my harasser told the #polisci community that what I said about him harassing me was untrue. bit.ly/BuzzfeedStory1
3/ He also indicated that his cooperation with the ongoing investigations with the @MPSAnet, @michiganstateu, and @UMich was an attempt to clear his name.

@DrKatrin_Rabiei @ManelWatchUS @_WomenSpeakers_ @LoggheMD @JusticeInMed @WomenSurgeons Ideas – multifaceted approach:
1. Need to Increase awareness; call it out each time. Use #manel alerts – i.e. let Twitter friends know of #manels and they can tweet about each one. Allies can work together. @DrSinhaEsq @JulieSilverMD #ILookLikeASurgeon #genderequity #inclusion /1
