@ICRC reminds parties in Ukraine: When international armed conflict breaks out and people find themselves at the mercy of belligerent States, the #GenevaConventions provide a minimum safeguard to protect their dignity, physical & psychological integrity. icrc.org/en/document/uk…
The #GenevaConventions protect all persons in the power of the belligerents by taking their different situations into account – combatant, civilian, POW, medical personnel, sick, wounded, woman, child, mercenary, persons w/ disabilities…
Here is how 👇
blogs.icrc.org/law-and-policy…
The prisoner of war (POW) regime in the Third Geneva Convention is primarily designed to protect members of the armed forces in the enemy hands. Since they are disarmed and no longer a threat, detaining powers must treat them humanely and in line with their role as combatants.

I've seen lot of kind generous people organising and donating goods to support #Ukraine. Theres something that feels very 'real' & immediate about buying a pack of nappies or tin of infant formula and thinking of it being put to good use, however (yes I'm afraid its a thread) 1/
its unfortunately the case that donating goods rather than funds can cause great difficulties in a time of humanitarian crisis, as seen in Haiti in 2010 2/

(1/7) Breathing the air of a free and sovereign #European nation never felt so strange to me than in these dark days, while – just 1.500 km away – the people of @Ukraine get murdered on European soil in an unjustifiable #war of aggression by the Russian regime.

My heart and deepest thoughts are with the people of #Ukraine, with their brave defenders fighting irresistibly right now for their homeland, their families, their…

With news: 8 former US troops/Blackwater guards convicted of war crimes petition for #pardons...

Read this timely analysis.👇

Brian Finucane writes on LONG-held U.S. legal position that a Commander's failure to punish war crimes can itself be a #WarCrime

I also have a 9/12 memory. 19 years ago today...
i worked in “L”, the legal office @StateDept, handling int’l humanitarian law (mainly law of war/armed conflict). I came in early that morning and, tho my memory is hazy on the particulars, found a post-it note on my desk.
It was from a senior lawyer, brilliant person who had 20 questions for each 1 of yours (L ppl, familiar?). the handwritten note said something like, ‘david, what if a perpetrator/facilitator of the attacks falls into US hands? what’s their status? criminal? combatant?’

Cases of #pillage by corporate actors investigated and brought to justice are rare.

Very rare.

Still, TRIAL International in recent years has submitted no less than 4 such criminal cases to the Office of the Attorney General (OAG) of #Switzerland.
1/
The first complaint concerned the role played by #Argor-Heraeus in refining several tonnes of gold illegally extracted from the #DRC.
The OAG decided in 2015 to close it down.
Not being a civil party, TRIAL was unable to appeal the decision.

2/
The second case, filed in 2016, concerns a Swiss businessman, Christoph Huber, currently under (very slow) investigation by the OAG for his role in the #looting of raw materials in the #DRC.

@rlefraim wrote, "WHY DID THE USA STATE THAT JEWISH TOWNS AND VILLAGES IN #JUDEA AND #SAMARIA WERE LEGAL?

BECAUSE THEY ARE.

All the rhetoric claiming that Jewish Settlements are illegal under International Law, are really political proclamations misstating what the law is 1)
Those claiming settlements illegal point to the Geneva Conventions, and claim that Israel took land in war from other countries and therefore moving populations to those areas and establishing settlements is illegal. 2) #Israel #GenevaConventions
BUT THAT IS ABSURD UNDER THE GENEVA CONVENTIONS WHICH ESTABLISH RULES ABOUT CONFLICTS BETWEEN SOVEREIGN STATES. When Israel took over the West Bank (so-called) in 1967, it was not a part of Jordan, never recognized as part of any sovereign Jordanian state. 3) #Israel

We might be biased, but we think the #GenevaConventions are the most important achievements of the 20th century.

Today they turn 70.

Here’s why it’s so important that even wars have rules. #GC70 #thread
Torture is unacceptable.
Sexual violence is prohibited.
Sick & wounded must be cared for.
Hospitals must not be attacked.
Detainees must be treated humanely.
Families should know the fate of missing relatives.
The dead deserve dignity.

#GenevaConventions preserve our humanity.
After the atrocities of the Second World War, the world came together to prevent such horrors from ever happening again.

It took just 4 months negotiate the #GenevaConventions.

They are universally ratified.

Happy birthday to the 1949 #GenevaConventions! 69 years ago, after the horrific experiences of World War II, States gathered and adopted 4 Conventions at the Diplomatic Conference in #Geneva. Thread 👇🏼
One year before (in 1948), drafts of the Geneva Conventions were discussed at the 17th International conference of the Red Cross in Stockholm. #GenevaConventions
Sadly, Count Folke Bernadotte - the president of the Swedish Red Cross and president of the International Conference - was killed in Jerusalem a month after the conference.

I’m spending a lot of time reviewing Judge Kavanaugh’s rulings to see if he has the temperament and wisdom—and whether he has shown the independence needed of our next #SupremeCourt Justice. Very disappointed by what I’m seeing:
He disagreed with, and wrote a dissent against, a court ruling that the punishment for entering this country illegally cannot be “forcing a child to have a baby”
His opinion would have allowed the government to use delay tactics to prevent women and girls from controlling what happens to their own body. Or, in other words, he drafted a (losing) legal argument that would have forced a child to have a baby acludc.org/sites/default/…
