A little inpromptu lesson on one of the enlightening corners of #genrestudies. You'll see very soon why I use this particular tweet for the lesson. 1/
#AnneFreadman is well known among #genre researchers for her insistence on seeing genre as a loose open-ended system of interrelations and differences. A key point in her understand is her presentation of what she calls "not-statement". 2/
The point is most easily made in an example. If I say "a refrigerator is not a deep freezer" the statement will almost always be more meaningful than if I say "a refrigerator is not a rhinoceros." 3/

A few things that Claire Lehmann of #Quillette hasn't grasped.

1) It is #StephenHsu's position as @michiganstateu Vice President, Research & Innovation, that is in question.

2) That admin position is distinct from his status as a professor in the Dept of Physics and Astronomy. Image
3) The petition by #MSU's Graduate Employees Union asks for the removal of Stephen Hsu from his admin position as VP Research & Innovation. Not from his role as professor at the same uni.
4) It's beyond laughable to suggest any graduate student would ask for the removal of one of the most stratospheric administrators of their uni in a bid to create better job prospects for themselves. Deeply ridiculous.

Claire doesn't know what she's talking about. #Quillette

Stephen Hsu: “These horrible people will stop at nothing.”

“These horrible people” are faculty at the uni where he is VP Research.

“These horrible people” are graduate students where he is VP Research.

He doesn’t have their trust.

He is in a leadership positions over them.
They wrote a petition.

A VP Research at a public research uni in the US is threatening a lawsuit against graduate students over a truthful petition.

@michiganstateu, let him go.

Let him sue when he is no longer VP Research.

Please, #highereducation let it sink in how twisted this situation is. Hundreds of faculty members and graduate students sign a petition--with evidence and good reason--calling for the removal of the VP Research & Innovation at their institution, a public research university.

@BryanVanNorden recently linked this piece on Adorno and music; it was published a little while back in Feb 2018. I've not read Adorno's writing on music; but I want to sketch out some thoughts on what's said about his ideas on #genre in this piece. 1/

First, I liked learning about the historical context and biographical detail in this piece. That Adorno's mother was a singer; he himself played the piano and studied with Alban Berg. (I've not read much Adorno biography, clearly.) 2/
Since I was talking about #30JahreMauerfall last week, also of interest is that in exile in Los Angeles, Adorno worked with Hanns Eisler, a composer and close collaborator of Bertolt Brecht. When Eisler had to leave the US, he settled in the #DDR; he wrote the national anthem. 3/

@dunaevtimur asked with a bit of insistence for at least some outline of what I was thinking about when I wrote the below tweet. So let me try. 1/
I'll start with my perspective in the moments of noticeable divide. Reading and/or being trained in feminist scholarship, queer theory, anti-racist strategy, trans studies etc. is a disciplinary training. It disciplines your mind to see certain patterns, read in certain ways. 2/
If you've been in classes, rooms, committees, fora with feminists, queer theorists, anti-racist activists for years, you internalize those patterns and the language that comes with it. 3/

The #threats invaded my #Brexit #genre #thread. It was supposed to be mostly fun and #FBPE-games, but the threads turn it grim . So. I'll establish this new thread of uses of the threat as genre in the Brexit debate. It won´t be a lot of fun. #forensic #linguistics #genrestudies
Before I get going, a little piece of research dissemination on threats by my good colleagues @TanyaKaroli and @MarieEBM:

Exhibit A: @cliodiaspora has had to bear a truckload of abuse and quite a few threats for her engagement. I admire her intensely for sticking to her guns. This one is ugly in many many different ways.

So, while we are resting on the #FBPE-laurels after a hot chase of #WATON, a few very preliminary thoughts on #Brexit and #genre. As my handle indicates, I came to #Twitter with an intent to talk about genre #research, but I have ended up talking about Brexit instead. 1/
Or is that indeed "instead"? A central finding of #genrestudies is that #genre is well nigh omnipresent in human culture, cognition, and communication. Thus, we think, react, and act in genre patterns, and we all have a surprising aptitude for understanding and using genre. 2/
Thus, it may never have entered your mind while discussing #Brexit (or, hopefully, the lack thereof) that you are constantly using and discussing #genre. But you are. Allow me to show you. 3/
