🧵THREAD: I’m now an #AppleTeacher with Portfolio Recognition!
Over the past year, this has been a fantastic professional learning experience, as I reflected on & developed how I integrate @AppleEDU #iPad in my classroom.
👀 Here’s my journey…
#AppleEDUchat #EveryoneCanCreate Image
Through #AppleTeacher Portfolio, a teacher creates a digital portfolio of 9 different lessons at three levels: Activate, Explore & Apply.
Teachers include aspirational examples, resources and — most importantly — reflections on each lessons.
#AppleEDUchat #EveryoneCanCreate Image
Activate Lesson 1: “Where do the animals live? Introduction to Global Climates”.
Students created a simple map showing the native habitat of animals using #Keynote on @AppleEDU #iPad

In Session 2, we focused on networks in #cultural and #creative industries: Building on the relations between UK #theatre workers, @ManfredideBern1 from @KingsCollegeLon showed the process of #CoProduction of #networks in space and time. (1/4)
Dominic Power analysed rural #female #artists’ work and #creativity in #Sweden. He found out that being in the #periphery does not automatically mean #isolation from the center or lesser #creative possibilities: Their networks go far beyond a classic #CorePeriphery model. (2/4)
Alice Bobée elaborated on the entanglement between #BusinessSchools’ cultural economic #geography and cities’ reputation: Facing reduced public #funding, #French business schools have set up campus in European cities, dissociationg themselves from their #national origins. (3/4)

@JorgeCBerny @juliosbernal The graphic of @Conabio summarizes current information on the age of #archaeobotany remains of main #Mesoamerica crops. But it does not discuss or qualify these findings. 1/n
@JorgeCBerny @juliosbernal @Conabio 1) There are relatively few #archaeobotany sites in #Mesoamerica compared with. e.g., #FertileCrescent. So, are current finds representative of the #domestication age of the different #crops ? I doubt it. 2/n
@JorgeCBerny @juliosbernal @Conabio Even the oldest remains (squash, maize) are fully domesticated and do not include a transition from wild to domesticated. So, their domestication could be even older. 3/n

Now Out in Paperback! “#China Goes to #Sea: #Maritime Transformation in Comparative Historical Perspective”

amazon.com/China-Goes-Sea…

@NavalWarCollege @ChinaMaritime is proud to publish this new version w/ @NavalInstitute @USNIBooks!

Come for the #maps, stay for the #history...
Honored to have #JonathanSpence’s endorsement:

“The maritime #history of #China has long been a neglected field..China Goes to Sea bring[s] that knowledge-gap to an end..will be an indispensable companion to those readers seeking to understand where China’s navy may be heading.”
As European #naval powers & even the @USNavy struggle with ship numbers, #China has gone to #sea.

Represents the reversal of a great historical trend that began 600 years ago, when China withdrew from the seas & European naval expansion spread Western influence around the globe.

Many students ask me about SCM/Logistics Degree programs.
Go to any top business school at an Ivy League university.

Alternatively, you may choose to find some decent department of Economics that has a strong partnership with other faculties, such as Operations Research, Industrial or Transportation Engineering.
Many Transportation Economists also enter into SCM/Logistics or Inventory management using their knowledge of network models and game theory, etc.

1. Another question I constantly get: Can Chinese data be trusted? High Frequency data shop like Baidu or other private data source advertise their data showing similar thing as govt economic data, but more real time = acknowledgement of recent higher quality govt economic data.
2. Around 2014, the central government was extremely concerned that several northern provinces’ reported GDP numbers were overinflated by local officials. In 2016, the LiaoNing province in the north was asked to reduce its reported GDP figure by 22.4%.
3. 2018, after the fourth national economic census, 12 out of 15 northern provinces’ GDP estimates were adjusted lower, while 14 out of 16 southern provinces were adjusted higher. Jilin and HeilongJiang, both northern provinces, have respectively been adjusted down more than 20%.

@AnnalsOfScience just published an article I wrote with my colleague @smolinab1 as part of our research on a chronological and cosmographical Tratado composed in the New Kingdom of Granada (c.1696) 🧵(1/17)

The moment British Universities started to rely on student fees is when their recruitment began to determine what disciplines exist as departments. This has been a decades long process coming to fruition 1/7
Departments now have to be considered individually financially sustainable to survive - not just cover their own staff costs but also make a contribution to the University as a whole which in my experience can be another 60-80% of those costs 2/7
Which crudely means that, in effect, students increasingly determine what research is possible in Higher Education. Without student number controls the effects are even more uneven across the sector 3/7

In 2017, I embarked on what I thought was going to be a small side project on who speaks in #geography and from where. I wanted to see how far we are in #decolonizing our discipline.

The project became a three-year undertaking and I was not prepared for what I would find.
2/14 Most of our journals are poorly equipped for #decolonizing knowledge. 90% of editors and 82% of board members come from a small set of Anglophone countries.

Editors and boards are more Anglophone than authors, which does not help in diversifying the origins of authors.
3/14 The situation is even more dire with handbooks and progress reports, where 93%+ authors and editors are from Anglophone countries. This makes agenda-setters a rather homogenous bunch, language-wise.

1/4 Are you a #bored #student or #teacher? Do you like #maps #geography #GIS? Consider taking a look at #GISsurfer which is a general purpose web map I developed. This project is a public service and part of my way to “pay it forward”.

Homepage: gissurfer.com Image
2/4 Government agencies host all kinds of GIS data. Anyone can use GISsurfer to look at that data almost as easy as you surf the internet. No GIS savvy required! You can add GIS data to the map and then save a link that will display your map. Image
3/4 Tip: The detailed documentation is in several PDF files that are linked near the top of the ‘Help’ page. To see some maps I made, click Menu ==> GISsurfer special maps ==> scroll down. Note the “Map tips” link in upper left corner. Image
