#GlobalSouth: Macron sent a series of signals to French companies ahead of his 18th trip to Africa as President of France: 1) “The French economic world needs to wake up and fight”; 2)“We believed that because we were France, even when we were bad, even when we were⤵️
pricier, even when our financing solutions weren’t as good, we would still be chosen”; 3) “We can’t keep looking down at people”; 4) “It’s not like: We come to your place and do good. We are coming to defend our interests in a way that respects⤵️
the interests of African countries.” Macron's policy recommendations are not enough. To make a difference, there should be a clear French economic diplomacy (embedded in a larger European one), with public-private investments in Africa/Global South.

Countries in the Global South are sensible and pragmatic, and act in the best interests of their people, unlike Western nations which, today, are acting on ideological impulses and often against the best interests of their people. A 🧵. (1/16)
That's why #China will support #Russia economically but not provide it with weapons. They know Russia can win this war on their own, so long as they are supported economically. China will continue to provide technological assistance/dual use items, such as semiconductors. (2/16)
They will buy huge quantities of pipeline gas, #LNG, and oil, because that is a win-win strategy. China needs to develop #Tibet and #Xinjiang and needs cheap energy; Russia needs money and goods that China can produce cheaply. This partnership has defeated US sanctions. (3/16)

#GlobalSouth: A large part of the Global South votes for Ukraine in the UN Assembly. This seems to be caused by the exposure of the issue of Russian aggression & the reputational costs associated with it. In practice, the Global South does not join in sanctions against⤵️
Russia and does not provide military aid to Ukraine. The self-exclusion of those from Asia, Africa and South America from international efforts to stop Russian aggression stems from biases inherent in the construction of global politics:⤵️
1) anti-Americanism (revolving around critical perceptions of respect of int law during military actions in Iraq, Libya or Serbia); 2) anti-colonialism (the fact that Europe & the US were involved in colonialism seen through the imagery of slavery, involving the African pop);⤵️

#GlobalSouth: The West has communicated ineffectively about the Russian war against Ukraine in the Global South. 1) Scholz's recent meeting with Lula gave another evidence of that. Instead of supporting Ukraine, Brazil has proposed establishing a club of "neutral & non-aligned⤵️
nations", made up of Brazil, China, India and Indonesia to seek a peaceful solution to the military conflict. 2) None of these countries support sanctions or the provision of military support to Ukraine. 3) Although the West has learned to orchestrate & coordinate a common ⤵️
front against Russian aggression, it has completely ignored the dissemination of the undistorted narrative of events in Ukraine. 4) After almost a year of war, Western leaders are not understood beyond Western borders. 5) With access to markets in the Global South, Russia can⤵️

Declassified: #Khan says #West plants corruption, feeds on #GlobalSouth

A new Declassified report revealed information regarding a documentary about Pakistani former Prime Minister Imran Khan, titled Behind Closed Doors. en.mdn.tv/707G
The significance of the following statements increases given that the documentary was initially filmed while Khan was still in office. en.mdn.tv/707G
The report emphasized that Khan, in the documentary, claimed that the collective West sought to rob the Global South of its resources and, contrary to popular opinion, has no intention of putting an end to corruption but is rather fueling it. en.mdn.tv/707G

Here is my take on #COP27 outcome(s) on #climate #mitigation based mostly on fieldnotes from COP, focussing on #FossilFuels, #JustTransition & #equity/ambition dichotomy.@TheIndiaForum @girmanipal @CentreMarcBloch @FU_Berlin @NavrozDubash @ClimateDiplo 1/8
theindiaforum.in/climate-change…
I argue, "Despite alarming evidence about the pace of cc, #COP27 failed to raise mitigation ambition. While the 1.5°C limit was salvaged in the end, the lack of consensus on fossil fuel phase-down/phase-out scuttled the possibility of meaningful action in the coming years." 2/8
Not only are #industrialized countries' mitigation commitments grossly insufficient to meet the 1.5°C limit, their efforts to sidestep their pre-2020 commitments, Paris decisions & delink developing countries' mitigation efforts from #climatefinance dilute #equity. 3/8

3/12. The G77 and China have tabled a very detailed proposal for a fund designated as an “operating entity” of the financial mechanism of the @UNFCCC, but the current text uses the term “fund as part of new and enhanced funding arrangements".
