THREAD 1/ The police officers who planted drugs on the investigative journalist Ivan #Golunov back in 2019 have been sentenced to 5-12 years in prison and ordered to pay Golunov compensation of 5 million rubles ($68,000). The severity of their sentences is important.
2/ We live in a society that believes that someone who was framed by the security services is lucky that they backed down. People say, “You’re lucky they didn’t put you in jail,” and see that in itself as a victory for the victim and punishment for the perpetrators.
3/ Unfortunately, the security services also think like this: that it’s punishment enough that their operation to frame an innocent person failed, and that person has been amply rewarded by getting off lightly.

Several hundred protesters have paralysed part of central Moscow today for an unsanctioned march in support of press freedoms, despite yesterday’s release of arrested journalist Ivan #Golunov. They’re demanding prosecution of those who ordered his arrest on bogus drug charges
It’s very peaceful so far despite the threat of detentions and worse for participation in an illegal gathering. But considering it’s a public holiday & thousands of tourists are out, it could get very messy if the National Guard patrolling the area begins a clampdown 
At least one person has just been detained by police, as the crowd begins moving from Chistye Prudy park en route through the city centre

At least two people here have made T-shirts with Golunov’s name. 31-year-old photographer Aleksei plans to print several dozen in advance of a protest for #Golunov to be held in central Moscow on Wednesday, expected to gather several thousand people
Many see #Golunov’s arrest as part of a broader restriction on freedoms enshrined by new laws banning offending “the feelings of believers” or disrespecting officials, as well as legislation expanding state control over the internet. “It should not be like this” reads one placard
