Here are some numbers, @laneygradschool. Numbers so large we can hardly imagine them. This is what the deans, presidents, and minions of the @EmoryUniversity made in *2017.*
#DeanCurran recently retired to a nice volcano in Mordor.
Q: What do they do all day?
A: Read my tweets. Image
Since the #university is private, we literally don’t even know what these clowns are raking in every year nowadays. This information is not available. @Kimjacobarriola what’s your salary? Or is it rude to ask?

#GradStudents aren’t included in budget meetings. Can’t IMAGINE why.
I shudder to think who the new *interim associate senior apprentice acting adjunct vice dean* will be and what they will earn for doing it. it’s just…gross. anyways, he’s gone— maybe distribute the wealth freed up by his obscene salary? It’s almost 40x what a #PhDstudent makes.

There’s nothing to celebrate, @laneygradschool . The upcoming year will feature #StarvationWages and institutionalized abuses for #gradstudents, same as any other. Bring your government issued ID and turn the beer bottles into Molotov cocktails. 🍾🔥 TODAY!!!!

@emoryDSAC we are running out of time before the start of the fiscal year. are you gonna rage against this fucking machine or not? @ravibell and @Kimjacobarriola are banking on your (continued) silence and complacency. Rob that bank.
#phdlife is a picnic, for sure for sure

Many of us are days or weeks away from the fall semester beginning. I thought I'd offer a 🧵 for #gradstudents & faculty to📍 for that course prep.

It never hurts to "start over" as you approach your fall courses. Some have already been doing this; others have been waiting till Aug. arrived. If you haven't "rethought" your courses in a few semesters, then now is a perfect time.

Plan backward (i.e., Understanding by Design, Wiggins & McTighe):

Start w/an ESSENTIAL ? (EQ) your students will spend the semester thinking about. This inquiry-based approach will offer you a starting point to frame your course. We can't cover everything; tell a story.

I've struggled with depression for 6 years. Trying to complete my M.A. during a pandemic has been exceeding difficult. Campus? Closed. Libraries? Closed. Archives? Closed. I’ve had to re-learn how to learn in isolation.

In 2019, I worked as a stripper for 4 months, while attending full-time M.A. classes and working PT. I lost both jobs in March 2020. I didn’t have classes again until Jan 2021. It felt like the rug was ripped out. Pandemic dragged, my depression got worse.

Today we’ll be talking about the recruiting & hiring of disabled people for #faculty positions. Only ~4% of US faculty identify as disabled; not exactly representative of the ~20% of undergrads who are disabled...

Have you ever had a disabled professor? 1/6 #NDEAM #HigherEd
Sgoutas-Emch et al write about cohort hiring as a strategy to diversity #STEM faculty hires. This paper focuses on increasing the representation of women of color in UCSD’s STEM departments and outlines the steps of their cohort hiring ftp.arizonaea.org/home/68489.htm 2/6
The Urban Universities for Health also put out a report on the experiences of universities that have adopted cohort hiring practices. 70% of the universities reported an increase in faculty diversity following the implementation of cohort hiring tinyurl.com/CohortHire 3/6

After reviewing 10+ manuscripts for journals (across 3 disciplines) in the past 4 months I have a few pieces of advice for #gradstudents and young #EconTwitter academics:
1.) Precision: this refers to writing in active voice instead of passive voice. I struggle with this myself..
And have been reminded of this by mentors all the time, but it truly makes for better writing. Active voice helps you be direct about your writing. Objective writing does not mean passive writing.
2.) Be Concise: one of the common issues I find in writing is really long sentences - especially in the intro. Shorter sentences can make a very impactful statement too. Don’t be choppy and don’t just drone on and on and on and...you get the point... find that happy medium.

I am going up for tenure next year & preparing my materials. There is a book chapter I was invited to write in Fall 2014 just months after I got my PhD. I submitted the chapter in Spring 2015. The edited collection this chapter was written for has still not been published.
I am sure there are decent reasons for the immense slowdown in production. But can you imagine if I was relying on this publication as a junior scholar? I write this piece less than a year after graduating & will likely have tenure before its published. That’s bananas.
As someone working in disability studies I know there was many reasons for delays in schedules, but as a multiply marginalized junior scholar I also know that one publication coming in YEARS late could really fuck with someone’s tenure case.

As y'all know, I study higher ed lobbyists and used to work for one. A friend asked how I would lobby against the Graduate School Tuition Waiver Tax if I were still in the game. I thought about it, and here’s how I would tell students to oppose the #GradStudentTax (Thread): 1/19
First, I would shorten the name of the Graduate School Tuition Waiver Tax to the “Grad Student Tax.”

AKA: #GradStudentTax

Is it reductive? Yes. Does it get the point across? Also, Yes.

2/19
The next thing I would do is get #GradStudentTax opponents in the following states to start calling their GOP Senators:

Utah - Sen. Hatch - (801) 524-4380
Iowa - Sen. Grassley - (515) 288-1145
Idaho - Sen. Crapo - (208) 334-1776
Kansas - Sen. Roberts - (913) 451-9343
