In 2021, Taronga embarked on a new critical phase through the support of the #Reef Restoration and Adaptation Program (#RRAP), the worldâs largest effort to develop effective interventions to help #coralreefs resist, adapt to & recover from #ClimateChange impacts. @CoralTrace
A fundamental principle of #RRAP is to work closely with #GreatBarrierReef Traditional Owners, and engage different stakeholders, community groups and interests in the co-design, deployment and evaluation of proposed interventions or technologies.

In 1981 the Great Barrier Reef was declared as World Heritage under UNESCO, and Australia promised the world that âto the utmost of its resourcesâ our nation would âdo all it canâ to protect the Reef: whc.unesco.org/en/conventiontâĻ
It is important to remember that the Fraser Coalition Government chose to nominate the Great Barrier Reef - and the achievement of World Heritage status was something that we were proud of as a nation. Of course we would protect the Reef!
Hey @ScottMorrison this week your ministers said they were âstunnedâ & âblindsidedâ by UNESCO saying that the #GreatBarrierReef should be listed as in danger. Why? Here's a sample of 15 expert warnings in the last 5 years about the mortal threat to the Reef from #climatechange.
In early 2016, the first of recent mass bleaching events occurred in the Great Barrier Reef. Scientists estimated 22% of coral was killed, clearly linked this to climate change and noted the need for urgent action to counter impacts. nature.com/articles/d4158âĻ

Welcome to the #EnvironmentalCampaign archive. This story is about the long running Hinchinbrook campaign to stop a marina/hotel development at Oyster Point near the #GreatBarrierReef.
It began with Keith Williamâs proposal to create a 250 berth marina, 1,500 dwelling canal estate and a resort with âmillionâ dollar ocean views, requiring the removal of mangroves and dredging for a marina and canal.
Friends of Hinchinbrook (FoH) formed to 1993 to stop the development. The mangrove trees were protected by small groups of activists on 24 hour rosters.Despite being designed as unsuitable for a boat habour in 1977, in 1994 the project was approved.
