Thread: Appearances with right-wing populists and on TV: ex-#Frontex head Fabrice #Leggeri is causing trouble in the EU border protection agency. He even sneaked back into his old office for a video conference. Frontex threatens ex-director Leggeri with legal consequences. 1/x Image
2/x Actually, #Frontex thought it was rid of Fabrice Leggeri. At the end of April, the Frenchman was pressured to resign from his post as head of Frontex because he had covered up the #Greek refugee #pushbacks in the #Aegean.
3/x His contract was terminated and he was to vacate the office at the agency's headquarters in #Warsaw. But Fabrice Leggeri apparently can't quite let go. While the leadership of the #EU border management agency met last week in #Paris for a supervisory board meeting,

1/4 After the russian invasion #oil prices skyrocketed which is very beneficial to oil refinery countries like #India. russia provides them huge discounts, selling oil for 30-35 dollars/barrel (meanwhile on the international market the price is 120 dollars/barrel)
#Banrussianoil
2/4 Most ships delivering oil are #European, #British or #Norwegian - up to 68%. 43% more were of #Greek origin. For ships delivering to India this percentage is even higher - approximately 80 %.
3/4 Since the full-scale invasion, export of refined #oil products from India rapidly grew from 580 000 to 685 000 barrels a day. A lot of it gets exported to Asian countries, but around 20% is purchased by Europe and the US.

#Greece applied the 3-mile criterion from the 1923 Treaty of Lausanne to 1936.
Greece, which has been applying the six-mile criterion since 1936, has long opposed the expansion of its territorial seas and defended the "principle of freedom of the seas" until the 1970s!
#Greece even vigorously defended these opinions at the 1st and 2nd Law of the Sea Conferences. After 1970 she began to openly reveal her true expansionist intentions.
At the last naval conference she made a great effort to ensure that 12 NM was not a maximum but a fixed principle.
However, she did not succeed. Article 3 of UNCLOS titled "Territorial Waters" states that "Each State has the right to determine the breadth of its territorial waters from the baselines determined in accordance with this Convention to a limit not exceeding 12 NM".

Hi.

* The #OldTestament is not the same as the #HebrewBible.

- The Hebrew Bible is in #Hebrew (and small bit in #Aramaic).

The Old Testament is a #Greek translation of the Hebrew Bible (some of it is just paraphrased, bits missing, bits added) + extra material in #Greek. 1/n
The later Protestant Bibles that directly translate their "Old Testament" from the #HebrewBible are taking part in an ahistorical exercise that seeks to erase Judaism.

Because there was no fixed #HebrewBible canon we know at the time of Jesus.

It post-dates Christianity. 2/n
The #OldTestament is not a sacred canon of Jews.

Saying things like, "Jews follow the Old Testament," is inaccurate and pushes a modern Christian view of Jews onto Jews, which is ahistorical and just participates in the continued erasure of Judaism.

My new digital restoration is this remarkable 2nd c. AD #sculpture of #Eros (Cupid) on a dolphin, approximating how it might have once appeared in the garden of an ancient Roman villa. But who’s captured who here? #polychromy #art #archaeology #romanhistory @MANNapoli 1/ Image

A few close-ups reveal that the head is likely modern - probably 18th c. (?), and quite good - but everything else, aside from a couple of fingers, appear to be ancient. The modern curls are very Botticelli-esque! 3/ ImageImageImage

If you are new to the world of online gaming it won´t be long before you begin to wonder if someone re-invented the English language while you were asleep. This is because many of the terms in the gaming world will seem like #Greek to you.

The #Deltacron tweet made a big impression on me yesterday and I've been thinking about letter names ever since. One thing to note is that we like to pretend we know what the #Phoenician letter names were, but we don't really. Most of the names you see are actually #Hebrew. 1/10
That goes for names like "aleph". Sometimes you'll see reconstructed forms, like "ʾalp", which are closer to the #Greek names and partially also attested in the Septuagint of Psalm 119 (118 in Gk)—but there they're actually Hebrew too, of course. 2/10 en.katabiblon.com/us/index.php?t…
One place where the Greek and Semitic letter names show weird correspondences is with the sibilants. @pd_myers has recently published on this (paywall): academic.oup.com/jss/article/64… 3/10

In a letter to EU's foreign policy chief Josep Borrell, Greek MEP Emmanouil Fragkos slammed Pakistan over the ongoing persecution of minorities.
Emmanouil Fragkos said, “Everyday life for Christians, like for all Pakistan's non-Muslim communities, has been degrading and dangerous. Christians are treated as second-class citizens, as are Hindus and smaller religious minorities."

1/n #Heliodorus pillar, erected at Besnagar around 2.134 kybp (113 BCE).

It was raised by Heliodorus, an ambassador of the Indo-#Greek king Antialcidas from #Taxila.

He called it the Garuda Pillar, in honor of Vāsudeva #Vishnu (#Krishna )
2/n The interpretation of #Heliodorus stambha is:

"it symbolizes joining earth, space and swarg, thereby bringing connotation the "cosmic axis" by expressing the cosmic totality of the Vāsudeva, Supreme Deity. "

Source: Approaches to Iconology, Vol 4-6, Hans Gerhard Kippenberg
3/n The inscriptions of #Heliodorus stambha is very interesting written in Brahmi script (Sunga period), language being Central-western epigraphic Prakrit, with Sanskritized spellings (Richard Solomon).

It praises Vāsudeva, the God of Gods & has verse from Mahabharata.

Two problems were identified with the education of #STEM based subjects.
Instructors at unis tend to pass on only #methodology, proof-writing & all the loaded #mathematical language of #symbols working in the backdrop.
But, ignore the #history & #philosophy of hard sciences.
Many A-level students study physics and get good grades, but they know little to nothing about Galileo, Maxwell, or Newton or the other greats!
Engineers do mathematics but have no clue about Euler, Laplace, Gauss, Fermat, Bernoulli and their personal rivalries and lives.
The same holds true for economists
No student can get a degree in economics without studying Keynes.
But, has anyone ever read about his personal life?
Keynes had a voracious appetite for stock trading, was sexually not straight, and was a non-economics degree holder.

On the occassion of #OXI day, I also want to highlight the personal story of a great and sadly still rather unknown Greek-jewish hero: Mordecaios Frizis (1893-1940).

He was a colonel in the #Greek military and died as first officer and war hero during the Italian #invasion.
First, a little background: #Jews have lived in Greece since pre-Christian times, and the oldest Jewish communities in Europe have their roots there. They were an integral part of society for millennia until the barbarism of the 20th century reached the country.
Almost 60,000 Jews, more than 75% of them from Thessaloniki, were cruelly murdered mainly in the gas chambers of the #Auschwitz and #Treblinka extermination camps. 97% of the Jews in #Thessaloniki did not survive the #Holocaust. Today, only about 5000 live in Greece.

#RomanSiteSaturday - The Pantheon🏛️

(1/8) Located in #Rome, Italy, the Pantheon is arguably the best surviving example of Imperial #Roman architecture. Richly decorated with Corinthian columns and a variety of coloured marble, it is truly a remarkable site.

#History #Classics
(2/8) Originally constructed during the reign of the emperor Augustus under the patronage of Marcus Agrippa, the current temple is actually a reconstruction undertaken by Trajan and Hadrian following an earthquake. Finished in 126CE, the original inscription was retained:
(3/8) "M·AGRIPPA·L·F·COS·TERTIVM·FECIT"

"M[arcus] Agrippa L[ucii] f[ilius] co[n]s[ul] tertium fecit"

"Marcus Agrippa, son of Lucius, made [this building] when consul for the third time."

(1/8) One of the twelve Olympians and the herald of the gods, Hermes also played the role of protector of human heralds, travellers, thieves and merchants.

#Classics #ClassicsTwitter #Hermes #Greek #Myth #Gods
(2/8) In Greek mythology, Hermes was the son of Zeus and Maia. In reality, he appears to have emerged in Mycenaean Greece in the Late Bronze Age. His name first appears in Linear B syllabic script as "hermāhās", and he may have been adopted from Mesopotamia.
(3/8) Beyond his role as messenger, Hermes was also able to freely move between the realms of mortals and the divine. As such, he also played the role of psychopomp, or "soul guide", directing the souls of the dead into Hades.

#Greek Coast Guard to train #Libyan counterparts as part of expansion of bilateral ties

#Greece wants #Libya to stand on its own two feet and is willing to help in this direction
In joint statements, Fragogiannis called for the withdrawal of foreign troops from Libya and noted that Greece had been the first country to open up a consulate in Benghazi and was the first country to arrive in Libya with a business delegation.
“What stands out in Greek-Libyan relations is that Greece has never harmed Libya nor borne any hostility toward Libya,” Issa said, lauding Greece’s beneficial influence in the Mediterranean and the world.
