New report: ‘What happens in English generalist #daycentres for #olderpeople? Findings from case study research’ by @katitao @JillManthorpe & Anthea Tinker
@hscwru @DunhillMedical @NIHR_S_L
1/6 Image
The report aims to improve understandings of #daycentres among social care/health professionals & potential collaborators. It showcases the complexity of these services & their diversity, shedding light on what makes them multi-faceted ‘interventions’. 2/6
The Covid-19 pandemic led to a greater appreciation of the need for in-person contact and the difficulties facing some older people when they could no longer meet other people in their #daycentre when these closed temporarily. 3/6

1) apartment block fire Over 3 hours since I saw it ignite and called the fire brigade. Parts of the walls now completely destroyed. Multiple flats on fire. probably near 100 firefighters here. #deptford #greenwich @LondonFire
2) I live opposite in Greenwich Creekside. We have flammable cladding and our flats are worthless and unsellable because Adriatic Land (the OWNERS of freehold) won’t pay. Which is why I am posting evidence of this fire, I wouldn’t normally film an event like this. ImageImage
3) #londonfirebrigade now cutting the edging off the building which seemed to be furnacing the heat earlier (I believe it is metal). Two cherrypickers with multiple fighters using oxygen. 3 hours and 20 mins in now.

You may be aware that @LG_NHS has declared an incident at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in #woolwich. I’d like to assure all residents of Greenwich that our teams at @Royal_Greenwich have been working side by side with our NHS colleagues & continue to do so tonight.
I’ve been speaking to colleagues at @LG_NHS today. The hospital is extremely busy but all patients continue to receive the care that they need, including oxygen therapy. The situation continues to be monitored. Today in @Royal_Greenwich our cases have rise to 761/100,000.
Given the continuing rise in Greenwich we are asking all residents of @Royal_Greenwich to help us by thinking 111 first. Whilst of course @LG_NHS is still open for you, there are lots of places across #greenwich to receive healthcare, advice & support.

Having seen & read a few things online this morning, I just want to make a few points about the way we were treated in #greenwich this week following our ask to schools to change the way we were doing things in the final few days of term.
The @guardian reports Patrick Vallance said yesterday that this new strain was detected in September and by 9th December accounted for 62% of all new cases in London.
In #Greenwich we acted on 13th Dec in response to the increasingly challenging circumstances we were facing.
Cases accelerating and numbers in isolation rising. @MattHancock announced in the House of Commons on Tuesday that a new strain had been found. I’ve checked with our local public health team and this was the first time they were aware.

Residents across @Royal_Greenwich will be in #tier4 from midnight - whilst many people will be understandably be upset about losing #christmas celebrations, it is absolutely vital we all work together across #Greenwich to deal with this new and immediate challenge. Some points ⬇️
1. The rate of infection across #greenwich is climbing incredibly quickly. Tonight, we are at 387/100,000 and our positivity rate is now 12%. @Royal_Greenwich
2. We have tonight been advised that the new strain of #covid19 is highly transmissible. Action is therefore needed to address this. We must do everything we can collectively to reduce our interactions with people as much as possible across #greenwich @Royal_Greenwich

A lot of tweets and messages coming through. I’ll be joining other leaders on a call later and speaking to the @Royal_Greenwich management team shortly so will be in a better position to advise residents of #Greenwich of what this means for us shorty.
Thanks to residents asking about schools and what happened earlier on this week. I’ve double checked with our Director of Public Health & the first we heard of this new variant on Tuesday this week.
There is no doubt that today’s announcement is a devastating blow for those desperately wanting to see our loved ones. However, as @NicolaSturgeon has just said that this strain is up to 70% more transmissible & therefore urgent action is clearly required.

Despite our teams & heads not hearing anything all along, it appears that schools will be going online after all. Here in @Royal_Greenwich I took the decision earlier this week to ask schools to change the way we did things here in #Greenwich…
I was deeply disappointed by the actions of @GavinWilliamson & the @educationgovuk who decided it would be better to see us in court rather than cooperate in the best interests of what was happening on the ground here in #Greenwich
The behaviour of the Government in creating an unnecessary row about legal powers would have been better spent sorting this out. Mass testing in schools has been something myself, other London leaders & @SadiqKhan have been banging on about for weeks.

Well it’s been a ‘bit’ of a day here in @Royal_Greenwich & I want to be clear with residents about what’s happening with the @TfL negotiation and what it means for you here in #Greenwich - the negotiations are ongoing but here’s what we know so far...
@BorisJohnson is demanding that the congestion charge is increased to include the south circular. Any #Greenwich resident driving in it would face a £15 charge. This would affect thousands of our residents and more than 4 million Londoners.
@BorisJohnson is demanding that the zip card is scrapped for 32,000 children & young people in #Greenwich. The @Conservatives are planning to make 32,000 children & young people in #Greenwich poorer. They may talk about levelling up but want to increase your bills each week.

1. St John Jones was born in Clynnog Fawr in Caernarfonshire (Gwynedd) into a courageous Catholic family who remained faithful to the #Church even at the height of the Protestant Reformation.

2. When John was a boy he entered a strict Observant Franciscan friary at Greenwich.

When it was dissolved in 1559 [by the Protestant forces] he moved to Pontoise, where he professed his vows. He later travelled to Rome and stayed at the Aracoeli friary.

3. While in Rome John joined the Roman province of the Reformati, a yet stricter branch of the Friars Minor.

In 1591 he asked to join the English Mission. Despite the evident risk to his life, his superiors agreed. He received a blessing and commendation from Pope Clement VIII.

In 1781 the good ship Zong was becalmed in mid-Atlantic and running low on supplies so captain threw 132 slaves over the side to their deaths. The owners claimed for them on insurance starting a legal battle which let former slave (& former #Greenwich resident) Olaudah Equiano...
...(111 Maze Hill since you ask) & Granville Sharp use the case to press for abolition of slave trade & slavery. The owners eventually lost but the Solicitor General would not prosecute the owners because "This is a case of chattels or goods. Blacks are goods and property..." is madness to accuse these... well-serving honourable men of murder… The case is the same as if wood had been thrown overboard” Sometimes we can't shelter behind the law and sometimes we must break it. I'm not weeping for the Bristol Harbour submarine

Due to continued crowds and people not doing the right thing, I’ve discussed with the team at @Royal_Greenwich & the foot tunnel in #greenwich will be closing imminently- bringing a @SantanderCycles from another part of town doesn’t constitute an essential journey! #COVID19
I’ve spoken to @MayorJohnBiggs & whilst this is a very regrettable decision, we don’t have any choice today as there are just too many people. Our teams at @Royal_Greenwich & @TowerHamletsNow will work together this week to see what we can do to address this issue.
It’s worth noting we haven’t had any issues in the week so perhaps a weekend closure will be required, but we will see.

Questions from councillors are here - apparently it would cost £10k to migrate old council docs onto the new council website (why does the press office never say this kind of thing when asked?) #greenwich…
oh-ho, it's @Billo20Four7 with a public question on the willow trees on the Thames Path (…) - he wants a protection order put on the trees. Sizwe James says he will write to site owners #greenwich
@Billo20Four7 Now here's @Billo20Four7 again asking about the lack of enforcement of pavement parking. "Pavement parking should be enforced and if you have any examples then please write to me," says Jackie Smith, enforcement cabinet member. Her email box is about to explode #greenwich

The #TimesSquare ball that's lowered each #NewYear is made of 2688 Waterford Crystal triangles. Crystal is made of minerals such as #silica, #potash and lead. It's frame is made of aluminum. There have been 7 different balls since 1907. The 1st was made of #iron and wood.
Dropping a ball to mark time started in 1833 in #Greenwich, #England, at the #RoyalObservatory. A ball was lowered each day at 1 pm so nearby ships could set their chronometers (a navigational instrument).

#nspoli #novascotia #ns Image
About 150 balls were used around the world after the success at #Greenwich, but few still work. #CitadelHill’s noon cannon served a similar purpose – it kept the military running on time and allowed ships to set their chronometers.
