Grad school application season is just around the corner. So, it’s time for a thread on #grexit. Spoiler: I’m on the fence. Here’s why. 1/
First, let’s limit the conversation: I want to talk about #grexit for PhD admissions in (bio)statistics. Why just PhD? Admit rates are (much) lower, and the “financial barrier” argument for #grexit is more relevant for a fully-funded program. 2/
Next, my experience: I am DGS and sit on the admissions committee at @umnbiostat. We receive ~180 PhD applicants each year, and make ~25 first-round offers. All members of the adcom score every PhD applicant; there are no “automatic rejects” based on grades or test scores. 3/

Kent State Geology faculty have voted to #droptheGRE from our graduate admissions process, and we're compiling a list of other programs doing the same to help make the case to the administration. #GRExit
Why do want to #droptheGRE? We've found it doesn't predict success in our program. It's also a financial barrier for applicants, especially international applicants who may have to travel for hours to take the test. #GRExit

Thread that I hope you'll read: My GRE started at 1pm today. #GRExit
I really wasn't sure in the weeks coming up to this what I was going to do. I knew any time I spent trying to review for this for-profit standardized exam was time taken away from academic work that was actually valuable to my preparation for graduate work in #plantsci #GRExit
Both approaches were fraught - giving it my best and making my already shaky health worse from added stress, or taking it symbolically and turning in my 0 scores. Each had big risks for me. #DisabledAndSTEM #GRExit
