@isro’s latest rocket, #SSLV, is geared for launch with the space agency aiming for an early Feb launch carrying three payloads. While the main payload will be #EOS7, the mission is also expected to launch #Janus1 from US' Antaris & an Indian sat. 1/n
The Earth observation satellite #SSLV is scheduled to carry will be in the small satellite class with its mass not exceeding 200kg, while the other two satellites sharing the ride will be smaller. 2/n
#SSLV can launch around 500kg sat in a 500km planar orbit and its key features — low cost, low turn-around time, flexibility to launch multiple sats, launch-on-demand, minimal infra requirements, etc,. — can make it a go-to LV for commercial launches in the future. 3/n

Late yesterday, @isro said that the CE20 cryogenic engine indigenously developed for #LVM3 (#GSLVMk3) has been successfully hot-tested “at an uprated thrust level of 21.8 t for the first time”. 1/n Image
“This will enhance #LVM3 payload capability up to 450kg with additional propellant loading. Major modifications carried out on this test article compared to previous engines was introduction of Thrust Control Valve (TCV) for thrust control,” Isro said. 2/n
Additionally, the space agency said a 3D-printed LOX (liquid oxygen) and LH2 (liquid hydrogen) turbine exhaust casings were inducted in the engine for the first time. 3/n

Here We Go: #Update #Thread

As #GSLVMk3 or #LVM3 prepares for its second commercial launch, @isro efforts on enhancing its weight-lifting capacity is gaining pace. I hear that the qualification tests for semi-cryo (SC120) are expected to be completed in a couple of months. 1/n
#GSLVMk3 is India’s heaviest rocket yet. Here’s some perspective: Between May 26, 1999 and Oct 22, 2022, @isro launched 345 foreign satellites, all on #PSLV, which together weigh 9,326.4kg. On Oct 23, 2022, in its first commercial mission, #LVM3 launched 5,796kg. 2/n
Of course, these missions are incomparable given that most of the foreign satellites launched by PSLV were ride-sharing payloads and include tens of small, micro and nano satellites… 3/n

Yesterday, @isro successfully carried out the flight acceptance hot test of a CE-20 engine for a duration of 25 seconds at its high altitude test facility in Mahendragiri. 1/n Image
This engine is earmarked for the next GSLV-Mk3 mission — the LVM3-M3 — identified for the launch of the next set of 36 OneWeb India-1 satellites. 2/n
"The cryogenic upper stage of the LVM3 vehicle (C25 stage) is powered by a CE-20 engine working with the LOX-LH2 propellants combination. This engine develops a nominal thrust of 186.36 kN in vacuum," Isro said. 3/n

Space PSU @NSIL_India, which as part of a commercial contract will launch 36 satellites for @OneWeb onboard #GSLVMk3 at 12.07am Sunday, is not only hopeful of a successful mission, but also confident of future prospects. 1/n
The #GSLVMk3, India’s heaviest launch vehicle, has so far had four missions, including the launch of Chandrayaan-2 after which it was officially declared operational. 2/n
Already sitting on the launchpad, a success will not only add to the GSLV-Mk3’s scorecard but also give @isro & @NSIL_India a second launch vehicle to offer to commercial customers. 3/n

For the first time since its development, India will be using #GSLV class of rockets to launch commercial missions, first of which'll be a @OneWeb constellation. All commercial launches by DoS and its arms so far have been onboard PSLV. 1/n
Now, @NSIL_India has identified #GSLVMk3 for commercial launch of @OneWeb satellites. Sources indicate that the next Mk3 launch could be that of OneWeb, even as another has been identified and is being readied for #Chandrayaan3. 2/n
I was the first to report in October last year about GSLV-Mk3 having inquiries for launching commercial satellites and an impending announcement (see link). 3/n

More #Space Updates: @isro , which has a packed 2022 has made considerable progress on #Chandrayaan3. With many related hardware and special tests successfully completed, the team is moving closer to integrated testing. Launch targeted this year. Maybe August. #Thread
@isro chairman S Somanath told me late last month: “Chandrayaan-3 has been going through a series of reviews, improvements, and strengthening. Some of these are based on the issues we’ve seen earlier....
...But the issues we’ve learnt so far may not be the only ones. The questions are many and we need to foresee a lot of them which may further require corrections. The hardware is under realisation too.”
