Q to VP Education candidates: "Across the University there are different schemes for engaging with reps and with students - how would you ensure consistency between schools?" #GUSRCelections
A (GK): Experiences are widely different between schools, keep the conversations open between school and class reps and staff with bi-monthly meetings #GUSRCelections
A (AW): Sit between different schools with different policies - hopes to write schemes into policies to keep schools consistent so students know what to expect #GUSRCelections
Q to VP Education candidates: " In the SRC Strategic Plan 2015-20, the SRC aims to train over 800 class reps per year - as VPEd how will you engage with class reps?"
A (AW): Class rep mixer is good, and conference is engaging - keep the Class Rep Toolkit up to date and make sure class reps are fully aware of these tools #GUSRCelections
A (PA): Lots of students aren't aware of the potential of the class reps - we need to work on improving general awareness across the whole student body
Q to VP Education candidates: "The Learning and Teaching Strategy is being renewed for the next 5 years - what do you think the future of teaching should look like @UofGlasgow ?" #GUSRCelections
A (GK): More embedded teaching and more interactive contact hours - learning material available whenever students want to build on their knowledge (not just from lectures) #GUSRCelections
A (GK): - Online resources, better use of contact hours and better interactions between the two #GUSRCelections
Q to VP Education candidates: "You all mention that you would like to work on de-colonising the curriculum and also including more LGBTQ+ issues - how would you go about doing this?"
A (PA): Work with VPSS and Welfare Officers, use staff to get more students aware of the policies #GUSRCelections
A (GK): Speaking to the relevant officers and attending relevant courses - collaboration with the council to speak on behalf of students who face these issues - recognises they need to speak to the people effected by these issues #GUSRCelections

A (PA): The fact that the PGR convenor position is unfilled is unfortunate - representation isn't the same everywhere - if elected they will do best to find reps of each school and work with them #GUSRCelections
A (GK): It is apparent that they don't know where they sit within the University - hopes to fill the position by the autumn elections - if not will speak to PGR students rather than just using NSS feedback #GUSRCelections
Q: In this job you will face many struggles - this is not a 9-5 - how are you going to take the advice you would give to students regarding wellbeing, and apply them to yourself and your own life? #GUSRCElections
A (EM): Important to practice what you preach - understanding that this position will take its toll. Being emotionally supported enough to support everyone else - dealing with stress effectively #GUSRCElections
A (RS): This has been a busy year for RS. They try to maintain a social life on top of the academic demands of University and working full time. Watching sabbs this year has allowed them to learn and prepare for this role #GUSRCElections
Q for VPSS: What do you think is the best way to engage with students (especially those from protected groups)? #GUSRCElections
A (BA): In terms of engaging students - go to where the students are and ask them what they want. The SRC needs to be more transparent in order for students to want to engage with it. On social media we could have a round-up of what the SRC has done #GUSRCElections
A (MM): Carry out anonymous surveys to find out what kind of activities and events they want - tailored events to suit the needs of all students #GUSRCElections
Q for VPSS: How would you further support international students bring their voice onto the SRC? #GUSRCElections
A (EM): Has seen a big push for more international student engagement on campus since coming to Uni. Would continue these events and make sure to bring in new events across campus. Would communicate with many different groups to find out what works for them #GUSRCElections
A (BA): If elected BA would like to try and get an international officer in place before Freshers' Week - supporting international students get into work in the UK after graduating #GUSRCElections
Q for VPSS: What are your thoughts on the Gender Recognition Act and how would you support students who are struggling with this? #GUSRCElections
A (MM): Work with a team to give the support people needed - work with schools to make sure this happens #GUSRCElections
A (BA): Believes that right now the system does not work for trans people. Supports the GRA reform. Thinks there is not enough information on campus and we should stop misinformation from spreading #GUSRCElections
Q for VPSS: How would you support students facing racism, especially in the context of increased racial abuse against Chinese students? #GUSRCElections
A (RS): The SRC's response has been great - the livestream was effective. We have to crack down on discrimination in general. RS has also enjoyed seeing the development of the online tool for supporting victims of harassment and bullying #GUSRCElections
A (EM): Sign posting that it needs to be reported and that it is unacceptable, making sure misinformation is stomped out #GUSRCElections
Q for VPSS: One area that we struggle with in terms of support and welfare is PG students and particularly PG Research Students - what would you do to ensure we are looking after PGR students' welfare? #GUSRCElections
A (MM): specific engagement for that demographic of students (such as PhD students) and suggests using targeted events to involve them more within the SRC #GUSRCElections
A (BA): When writing manifesto spoke to the PG Research Convenor - would utilise the PG Network on Facebook. Lobbying the University as whole to improve the financial offering for postgrads #GUSRCelections
Q for VPSS: what research have you done prior to applying for this role?
A (RS): Aside from past experience mentioned, RS has spoken to several current and former Sabbs. Being on Council has been a massive education. Has also learnt a lot from Tom (current VPSS) who is their line manager #GUSRCElections
A (EM): knew after time on welfare committee that this was the right position and feels very passionate about it. EM also sat and had a long chat with Tom about what the job entails #GUSRCElections
Q: The VPSS sit on conduct committees, seeing students at the worst stage of their studies, how do you feel you are the best suited candidate to deal with this?
BA: Thinks it is important to introduce a universal standardised system across all departments. BA wants the disciplinary code for all students to be very strong. We need to provide ongoing pastoral care to students going through misconduct cases #GUSRCelections
EM: You need to balance your capacity for empathy with your emotional strength. Cites experiencing difficult and draining situations on HIVE nights. Has also dealt with internal misconduct cases and would be up for tackling this side of the role #GUSRCElections
Q for VPSS: The role of VPSS you represent all students including at Garscube, how do you plan on engaging these students? #GUSRCElections
A (RS): Did not know about Garscube for a long time at University. Has enjoyed seeing more of Garscube on social media in recent teams. Believes the work that council have been doing is great #GUSRCElections
A (EM): Focusing on day time events that are accessible to them, communicating with people in the building and increasing the communication and presence on social media #GUSRCElections
Q for VPSS: what do you think is the number one issue facing students just right now - relevant to your role? #GUSRCElections
MM: Speaks from recent experience - the distance to campus, and accommodation. The lack of accommodation for students is a big issue for many students. Realised from speaking to students that many international students struggle with this. #GUSRCElections
MM wants to work with the SRC team to close this gap and work on this issue #GUSRCElections
Q for VPSA: Working with volunteering - how would you further develop volunteering at Glasgow uni? #GUSRCElections
A [AMS]: Believes Volunteering is not promoted enough within the SRC. Thinks some other services are advertised more. Would aim to get as many people involved as possible . #GUSRCElections
A (ET): It needs to be pushed more through social media and freshers week - as well as volunteering working more with clubs and societies to access a new demographic #GUSRCElections
Q for VPSA: What would you do as a VPSA to help societies regarding the price of catering and room booking on campus? #GUSRCelections
A: (AMS) would do more research into what the prices are and why they are so high - negotiate compromises and alternative options to make sure everyone is getting what they need #GUSRCElections
A [ET]: Plans for a pre-freshers mixer that would allow the Unions to advertise what packages they put on for societies - this could help the societies become aware of what's on offer. Would also put together packs for clubs/socs to help them with finances #GUSRCElections
Q for VPSA: Would you look in to changing the Freshers' Week wristband system at all? #GUSRCElections
A (ET): Thinks having good communication about what exactly the wrist bands involve (particularly about why the price is high/lower) is extremely important #GUSRCElections
A (AMS): for the freshers' band laying out everything you get for the price - making sure the week is jam packed with events to ensure they make as much money as possible #GUSRCElections
Q for VPSA: Do you have any plans for developing the Postgraduate side of the student experience? #GUSRCElections
A (ET): would look for feedback from talking to these groups about what would be helpful - PG students often don't feel involved so making sure these are advertised through moodle and other PG forums #GUSRCElections
A [AMS]: Would start with research - speaking to Postgrads to find out what sort of events they would like to see. #GUSRCElections
