Here's a long thread with evidence about why the @RSPOtweets has failed to make any difference with key sustainability promises incl. stopping #deforestation #indigenous #landgrabbing #ecocide #slavery #humanrights abuses for supermarket brands. 1/7 palmoildetectives.com/2021/08/23/why…
Source: @EIA_News @RSPOtweets members using so-called "sustainable" #palmoil continue with #deforestation #ecocide #illegal #landgrabbing from #Indigenous peoples.
Thus the certification is a #greenwashing con. @EIA_News #Boycottpalmoil #Boycott4Wildlife eia-international.org/news/palm-oil-…
The certification of #palmoil is considered to be a con by @GreenpeaceUK as it doesn't stop #ecocide #deforestation. Certified "sustainable" #palmoil doesn't exist #Boycottpalmoil #Boycott4Wildlife

Today is #WorldMangrovesDay. So let me remind you. #Mangroves;

- acts as buffer & reduce impact of cyclones & #storm surge.
- they break the #wind force
- provide #habitat to #animals during cyclone or otherwise
- they reduce #pollution.

We just need to protect them.
So how it works. Mangroves create a maze & dense habitat. With species which are salt tolerant & special adaptations. They act like buffer & consume the winds & energy. So after passing the storms get dampen. You must have read in ‘Theory of Vibration’.
They are prop roots. In #mangrove #ecosystem they are adventitious support roots. They Grow down from lateral branches, in a way support trees, with doing other root functions. Additionally roots buffer against damage to coasts & enhance biodiversity & carbon sequestration.

Challenge the lie that HS2 will destroy 108 woodlands. To support 500,000 UK jobs and deliver a low carbon, high capacity, better connected transformation of our railways, there are some upfront limited impacts. But let’s look at how limited they are:
1/14
England has 52,000 ancient woodland sites. 43 are affected by HS2 between London and Crewe, of which over 80% will remain intact.
2/14
If an ancient woodland is described as affected, in many cases this means a small section of it is affected. On Phase One, 32 are described as affected. Through careful design and environmental consideration less than 0.29 square kilometres of them will be lost.

Happy #MolluscMonday! Olympia #oysters (Ostrea lurida) are native to the West Coast of N. America. Native oysters provide shoreline protection, #habitat and food for other animals, accumulate sediment and filter water to benefit of aquatic vegetation. 1/ Live oysters covering a shoreline
2/ Once abundant in SF Bay, their numbers were greatly reduced by overharvesting and sedimentation during the Gold Rush. Current threats include non-native predators and climate change.

A thread to cover some of the major - and I mean seriously, shockingly major - gaps, mistakes and problems with the #environmental impact assessment for Montijo airport in #Portugal.

First up: no #fieldwork. AT ALL. 1/
That's right – the EIA of a major international #airport proposed for the country’s most important #wetland site for #bird #conservation didn’t bother to actually count any #birds.

Instead, they depended on studies already published for other reasons.

How did that work out? 2/
Well, the data on birds feeding in the #intertidal- the largest and most important #habitat in the #SPA- was collected in 2002-3.

In the 17 years since, the #Tagus has changed a lot for birds. Improved #water treatment but drastic increase in #shellfish harvesting. 3/
