hello goodnight šŸ™ƒ
letā€™s go to trinidad + tobago for pastelles

although there are many similaritiesā€”from the look to root originā€”pastelles are NOT the same as tamales. the cooking technique, flavor, texture, ingredientsā€”all unique to trinidad + tobago šŸ‡¹šŸ‡¹#happyfoodmas #avaeats
trinidadian pastelles were thought to come from the original spanish settlers in the 15th + 18th centuriesā€”some argue it was brought even earlier by the amerindians that first discovered + inhabited the island #happyfoodmas #avaeats
pastelles are a sign of the holidays for trinidadians. theyā€™re as popular as roti, doubles + pelau.

if your parents didnā€™t endure the process of making pastellesā€”someone at a house nearby did, making them by the hundreds.

#avaeats
thereā€™s a great dispute whether majarete originated in cuba, the dominican republic, or puerto rico. all three islands were once populated by the taĆnos.

Iā€™m a bit tardy, but itā€™s #HappyFoodmas time!
Tonight weā€™re headed to Colombia.
Christmas just isnā€™t Christmas in Colombia without natilla and buƱuelos. Natilla is Spanish for custard. BuƱuelos, deep fried cheese fritters, are served along side it.
#HappyFoodmas
Similar to dulce de leche and flan, natilla is custard with a cream base containing panela (hardened brown sugar), cinnamon, corn starch and whole milk.
Depending on preference it can be served creamy or firm.

w. origins in medieval england, itā€™s sometimes known as plum pudding or just "pud" #happyfoodmas #avaeats

tonight, weā€™re going all the way to to eastern europe for kūčios, the traditional lithuanian christmas eve dinner.

though some traditions are no longer honored, family makes the journey + a special effort just to come together to enjoy dinner #happyfoodmas #avaeats
lithuanians make the journey not so much for the meal, but for the sacred ritual of kūčios, bringing everyone closer + strengthening family ties.

if a family member died that year or canā€™t attend for a serious reason, an empty place is left at the table..
#happyfoodmas #avaeats
a plate is still placed on the table + a chair is drawn, but no spoons, knives or forks are set. a small lit candle is placed on the plate during the mealā€”itā€™s believed the spirit of the deceased member participates in the kūčios along with everyone

snaking lines like a supreme drop in japanā€”but this line isnā€™t for a new sneaker release.

or the new iphone.

itā€™s for christmas chicken.

CHRISTMAS FRIED CHICKEN.

specifically, KFC.
#HappyFoodmas #avaeats
while doing my research on christmas traditions around the world, the christmas fried chicken was a pleasant surprise. as i went down the rabbit hole of fried chicken in japan, i found two very different explanations of its connection to christmas.
#HappyFoodmas #avaeats
in 1970, takeshi okawara was the manager at the first KFC in japan. he overheard foreign customers talking about how much they missed christmas turkey, + that night, the ā€œparty barrelā€ at christmastime came to him in a dream.
