I'm Queer AF.

But here's the thing, and it's nuanced for twitter so bear with me:

I *don't* know that I would have figured out I was Queer if I didn't share community with LGBTQ+ folks. That's because I'm bi/pan in a society based around compulsory heteronormativity (1/)
When I was a kid I crushed on boys. It was what my (mostly girl)friends were doing. Being attracted to anyone else would make me weird.

But I was a weird kid. And I think the reason I didn't let myself come out until I was older is that I was afraid to affirm my weirdness. (2/)
When I finally acknowledged my queerness, when I named feelings for and got into a relationship with someone who wasn't a cis dude, no one in my life was surprised, and I made so much more sense to myself.

Most importantly, I felt a sense of peace. Like I *got* me. (3/)

I want to make a short thread about something very important to me.

As many of you know, I lost my dad to FoxNews and soft-conspiracy theorist probably starting a decade ago, and fully during the Trump Presidency.

It was awful and hard. Many of you know.
He refused to think. He wouldn't reason. He wouldn't challenge his preconceived notions or his ingrown biases.

He became angry and bitter and vengeful: and he didn't even know why, or with what.

It's been devastating to watch. He's 75 now.
About six-eight months ago, I made a hypocritical decision. I decided that he was going to get a pass on his horrible thoughts and opinions. I've cut people out of my life. But I will only ever have one dad.

I called him up. I laid it out. We live far apart. You're getting old.

I am proud of Jesus. I want to boast more of Him. He saved my life and gave me His. I want people to see Him and know Him.

I do not want to be the cause of someone not wanting to know Him.

I refuse to put barriers between anyone and Jesus. I want to be an open door to Him.
Someone I was told wasn't a true Christian said, "This is what God's kingdom is like: a bunch of outcasts and oddballs gathered at a table, not because they are rich or worthy or good, but because they were hungry, because they said yes. And there's room for more." (RHE)
LGBTQIA+ people are human beings, created in the image of God. Reducing someone's identity and existence down to their desires and preferences as though that is the most important thing about a person is so wrong! Our value and worth as humans come from how God created us.

My uncle, Daniel, died of AIDS in 1984, three years before I was born. A few years ago, I was blessed to meet Nick, a close friend of his who still lives in SF. He had a wall of 8x10 photos of deceased friends in his home and he gave me the ones he had of Dan in a neat folder.
Nick and Dan met working for Delta at SFO. Nick was a flight attendant for many years and Dan worked at the counter for a bit before changing jobs, always an aspiring singer and performer (see the Burt Reynolds headshot). Dan liked to go out and Nick tagged along as the older gay
When Dan eventually got sick, it came quickly. Nick used his benefits working for the airline to fly Dan home to Indiana to die among family. By that point, Dan had moved to New York, from what I recall. Nick went with him to Indiana and stayed awhile, until Dan was in extremis.

You know how every time Pride Month comes around with the parades and coloured crosswalks, you start seeing comments like, “I don’t care if you’re gay, just don’t shove your sexuality in my face.”?

Well, I’ve been thinking about that.
See, straight people like this don’t actually care if queer people march in parades.

Here in Lethbridge, for example, our annual summer fair kicks off with a parade, and I bet there are a few queer people in that parade. And these straight people don’t care.
These straight people don’t actually care if queer folk march. It’s not the marching that’s the big deal.

These straight people don’t like knowing that queer people aren’t straight when they’re marching.
