We have a long-standing tradition of labeling abhorrent acts of violence as acts of “hate.” But I wonder if in many cases this word choice is misleading and misinformed. /1
“Hate” connotes something individual, conscious, irrationally emotional, isolated. Yet many bigoted acts of violence are motivated by beliefs and social norms that are far more shared, embedded, and accepted than we like to think. /2
Further, often times these acts are more consciously and explicitly driven by self-love (2 Tim 3:2) than other-hate. And the inordinate love of “us” and “ours” can mask itself as a virtue (it’s “love” after all). /3
