Finally, the #GoldacreReview is published! (During Parliamentary Easter holidays, mid-ping-pong on the #HealthAndCareBill...)

It's 221 pages - each PDF page is a double page spread - so this could be a lo-o-o-ong [Thread].

Here goes...
First point to note, in the Terms of Reference (p5), is that this is about "access to #NHSdata by #researchers, #commissioners, and #innovators" - i.e. #Planning and #CommercialReUse - so it is directly relevant to the operation of millions of people's #NationalDataOptOuts... 🧵Today the APPG on Domestic Abuse & Violence launched our report:

“Road to Recovery:Meeting the mental health needs of domestic abuse survivors”.

We’ve taken evidence from experts by experience, policymakers & specialists.

[A gentle alert on sensitive content] Image
Mental-ill health is frequently weaponised against survivors or misunderstood by healthcare professionals.

Survivors too often experience re-traumatisation by the very system that’s meant to support them.

The consequences of this are serious & tragic including death & suicide. Image
Today we heard from Tom Guha, an expert by experience, whose mother died by suicide.

Tom explained how public authorities will have survivors with mental ill-health come forward for support,
but SO many are failed by long waiting lists, especially when they have to move home🏡.

Primary care services hold a unique position as the nations front door to our healthcare system.

However, we are concerned that the voice of primary care will be weakened as a result of the #HealthAndCareBill, and this could considerably impact on patient experiences (1/3)
That's why we put forward an amendment to the #HealthAndCareBill alongside @Rpharms & @The_AOP, which aims to ensure a stronger primary care voice in our future healthcare system.

@LordNigelCrisp has tabled the amendment which will be debated in the @UKHouseofLords today (2/3)
Our amendment would require Integrated Care Boards to work with primary care when preparing & revising their five year plans, in the same way they are required to work with NHS trusts/NHS foundation trusts.

A summary of our work on the Bill here: bit.ly/3rCGP1Y (3/3)

1/ Another thread on the awful #NationalityandBordersBill: a lot of commentators are saying that the Bill "creates second-class citizens of millions of Britain’s dual nationals" or allows "the Home Secretary" to strip citizenship without warning". As usual the reality's worse...
2/ As is true of left commentators' rhetoric on the "Tory #HealthAndCareBill", the idea that the #NationalityandBordersBill makes "second class citizens of dual nationals", overlooks the problems brought in by #Labour legislation: the 2006 Immigration Asylum and Citizenship Act.
3/ The truth is that the Home Secretary has had the power to withdraw citizenship since 2006. The new legislation "just" ensures that citizenship can be withdrawn without telling them first. This will obviously make it harder for people to challenge. #NationalityandBordersBill

2/ Plus, the "Johnson is a corrupt liar" narrative is useful as it plays on the "1 bad apple" trope, as does the idea that "the Johnson Government is uniquely bad" and that once normality is restored our problems will go away... #Number10Party
3/ By contrast the horrific Nationality and Borders Bill and #NHSprivatisation legislation making its way through Parliament, exposes the truth about the less-than benevolent intentions of the British state. The #HealthAndCareBill is built upon years of cross-party legislation...

re: #care cap in #HealthAndCareBill, procedural point is that gov is trying to make significant unforced policy change by introducing an am. to its own Bill *at report stage* i.e. *after* committee stage, when detailed #scrutiny is - in #HouseofCommons - supposed to happen. 1/6
#HealthAndCareBill committee stage finished 2/11, but gov only introduced its amendment 18/11. Gov may point, rightly, to fact that report stage is now 2 days (original plan was only 1). But this is no substitute for committee stage, when a committee can take expert evidence. 2/6
In these circs, when new policy is added at this stage, MPs ought to have the option of getting a Bill re-committed to the Public Bill Committee so the new content can be scrutinised in detail - Andrew Dilnot can give his evidence to MPs instead of/as well as @BBCr4today. 3/6
