For everybody looking for a break from #coronaviruses check out our @virusfusion007 recent results on a #herpesvirus known as #HHV8 or #KSHV.

The preprint is available at @biorxivpreprint bit.ly/39mvx9I.

The main findings are discussed in the 🧵 that follows (1/n) Image
KSHV and its cousin EBV use an envelope glycoprotein complex called gH/gL to bind to #EphA2 receptor tyrosine kinase to gain access to host cells. We set to determine the structure of the KSHV gH/gL-EphA2 complex and perform functional studies to understand the mechanism (2/n)
While we were gathering the functional data Su et al. published the 3.2 A structure and provided some interesting insights few months ago.
But under our 'no scoop good enough' mantra we kept working and obtained some cool data that we can now share (3/n)

Happy 2021! @MBVanElzakker and I are excited to share our new article published in #Immunometabolism: “Pathogens Hijack Host Cell Metabolism: Intracellular Infection as a Driver of the Warburg Effect in Cancer and Other Chronic Inflammatory Conditions”: ij.hapres.com/htmls/IJ_1341_…
2/ In the paper, we detail molecular mechanisms by which #viral, #bacterial, and #parasite intracellular pathogens can induce, or contribute to, a Warburg-like #metabolism in infected host cells in order to meet their own replication and nutritional needs.
3/ We also discuss how host defense towards #infection may impact cellular metabolic changes (including how #mitochondria can participate in the innate immune response towards infection)

@sickanddamned @__ice9 @GemzME @Cov19longtail @VirusesImmunity @MBVanElzakker Walker hi - I very much disagree that #Borrelia or #EBV are typically ” long gone” in infected patients who develop chronic symptoms.
@sickanddamned @__ice9 @GemzME @Cov19longtail @VirusesImmunity @MBVanElzakker 2/ There is a large body of literature showing that even if such #organisms cannot be found in blood, they can persist in certain tissues or the central #nervous system where they are very hard to identify clinically
@sickanddamned @__ice9 @GemzME @Cov19longtail @VirusesImmunity @MBVanElzakker 3/ This is particularly obvious w/ EBV which is a #herpesvirus. Herpesviruses almost never “clear” after #infection, and symptom resolution is due to the immune system’s ability to contain the #virus in a non-replicating state

So I’ve decided to #interview many of the researchers/MDs I collaborate with or know as friends. That’s b/c most have an incredible base of knowledge and unique skillsets that need to be shared with a wider audience!
2/ I started w/ Dharam Ablashi, who co-discovered the #virus human #herpesvirus 6 (HHV6) along w/ Robert Gallo in the 1980s. Here is the #interview, which ended up documenting one of the most fascinating + informative conversations I’ve ever had: microbeminded.com/2020/06/28/int… Image
3/ Overall, Dharam and I talked abt his own extensive research on #HHV6, challenges he faced in moving the work forward, plus his opinion on key studies that clarify the pathogenic role of HHV6-A + HHV6-B in neurological disorders such as #MS, #epilepsy, #ME/CFS and #Alzheimer’s
