I want to talk about lawyers

And I am going to do so in the form of a story

I want to talk about Daniel, Blake, Stephen and John

All 5 have important roles in this story
So let's begin

Now Daniel

He is really upset

A journalist has cast aspersions on his spouse

And he feels agrieved

Normal routes of reply to the journalist aren't an appropriate enough response

Instead Daniel wants to go further
So Daniel is really angry

He wants revenge

But in order to execute his revenge on Stephen

He doesn't have a crucial piece of information

His friend Blake works in the same industry as Stephen and knows this

So Daniel enlists Blake to provide this information to him

RIP John Motson - so many tributes today, but for me, Motty will always be the first one to call it right at Hillsborough. A 🧵
2/When I first started looking into the disaster in depth, I realised that the BBC archive was key to understanding what had happened.
3/I asked the bbc tape library to send me footage from the day of the disaster. I thought I’d get a bit of archive material. A box of tapes arrived.

When the Trojan Horse story broke in 2014 it did so on a narrative wave characterized by terrifying headlines of a ‘plot to Islamicise British schools’. But it was a based on a fake letter, & reveals a complete failure of government & journalism.

transformingsociety.co.uk/2022/05/19/the…
In January 2022, The New York Times released an investigative podcast about the Trojan Horse scandal which characterized it as an "Islamophobic hoax" and compared it to The Protocols of the Elders of Zion, a historical antisemitic hoax.

nytimes.com/interactive/20…
The Trojan Horse Affair, sparked by a fake letter, had massive long term, national implications. The controversy led to the development of a new phase in the Prevent agenda & the affair & the letter were used by Govt to back the implementation of a Counter Extremism Strategy.

One of the great unknowns, to this day, concerns the whereabouts of Chief Supt David Duckenfield on 15 April 1989, from around late morning to 2pm. These were crucial hours, when - as match commander - he should have been leading the best part of...

1,000 officers at the stadium.

This is a thread that considers the significance of his unexplained absence, and his explanation for not recalling his whereabouts. It’s long. Bear with me.

One tactic available to Duckenfield on 15/4/89 had been used at the previous FA Cup semi-final at Hillsborough: a ‘filtering’ system. This involved the processing of batches of Liverpool fans towards the turnstiles at Leppings Lane, to avoid them bunching up in the approach

After a seismic week for those involved in #Hillsborough, some thoughts from me. (long thread)
I’ve followed Hillsborough closely since 2008 when Anne Williams first collared me at an event and told me her story. I’d assumed that the disaster was finished with. After all, it had happened in 1989. It was past history wasn’t it? I couldn’t have been more wrong.
Anne made it sound as though the news was fresh. She also assumed that I was up to speed on the nuances of coronial law, and jumped straight in at the deep end, details-wise.

@pressgazette @EditorsUK #Ophrah Winfrey's interview with #HarryandMeghan provided one laugh out loud moment.
@pressgazette @EditorsUK Reacting to #Megan’s comments against the British media the UK's Society of @EditorsUK insisted:
"The UK media is not bigoted and will not be swayed from its vital role holding the rich and powerful to account following the attack on the press by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex"
@pressgazette @EditorsUK This is a preposterous claim. The UK’s mainstream media is notoriously bigoted and racist.
For decades now sections of the British press have led an unrelenting campaign of vilification against Immigrants, asylum-seekers and refugees.

Dear friends and #Resisters. As you might know, I am a #COVID19 survivor. It took 91 days the first round, and 27 the second to get on my feet. Many of my tweets in the next few days will be about the impact on my town (1/x) #NorthCarolina
Due to the poor planning of @unc to account for the fact that having students return to a community in which cases were already rising, @KevinGuskiewicz and other #UNC personnel are endangering the lives of those living here #ChapelHill #Hillsborough #carrboro (2/n)
This is also endangering the lives of our lowest paid workers at the university. @unc4cola , @workersunionunc , including graduate students, black and brown staff members and of course, the housekeepers. (3/n) Listen to staff and students and community

Image

Tonight we started the #Hillsborough regular town board meeting with one of my favorite events of the year - presentations of the Innovation, Customer Service, and Endurance Awards to @HillsboroughGov employees. I’ve been fortunate to serve on this committee for 4 years.
A few highlights: utilities staff working 11 mos w/o a director or asst director while rising above/beyond, learning new skills, and working together to “make it work”; TWO diff. lives saved by police officers; Straw for Dogs distributing 100 bales to keep pups warm. A few pics: ImageImageImage
Our staff are truly amazing, and much of their wonderful work goes unacknowledged in any formal or public way. We are truly grateful for it. Glad we could honor some of that work tonight. 🙏👏

It's excruciatingly embarrassing that our press has pumped out so much bilge about the EU that .@EUlondonrep had to have a page on its website dedicated to "A-Z of Euromyths".

As it's Friday, I've picked out my top-ten stupid stories by the British press on the EU #Thread
