In Oct 2020, an extraordinary collection of over 400 erotic sketches by British artist, Duncan Grant (1885-1978), came to light. The collection was thought to have been destroyed but had secretly been passed from lover to lover, friend to friend, for over 60yrs.

Grant was a painter, a textile designer, theatre designer & pottery artist. He was a member of the Bloomsbury Group &, although most of his love affairs were with men, he did have well as a relationship with Vanessa Bell (Virginia Woolf’s sister), with whom he had a child
Grant was born seven months before the 1885 Criminal Law Amendment Act, also known as the Labouchère Amendment, which criminalised all male homosexual sex in England.

This is Albert Parsons.
In 1887 he was murdered by the State of Illinois for his political views.
At age 13, he left his role as an indentured servant to join the Confederacy. As an adult he came to regard Reconstruction as necessary, and joined the GOP. He married a Black woman, Lucy Parsons, at a time when it was unthinkable.

By 1884 Parsons' views had changed further, and he was publishing a weekly anarchist newspaper advocating for labor and revolution.
In 1886 a bomb was thrown at a labor rally in Chicago's Haymarket Square. Many people were killed, including several policemen.

This is John Singer Sargent’s “Madame X” (1884). Although it doesn’t look remotely controversial today, when it was exhibited at 1884 Paris Salon, the public were so shocked & disgusted that Sargent moved out of the country, and his model’s reputation never recovered.

The sitter was the socialite Virginie Amélie Avegno Gautreau, wife of the French banker Pierre Gautreau.
Gautreau was an American expatriate, known in Paris as a ‘professional beauty’, meaning she used her looks to advance her social status - which she did exceptionally well
Her husband was much older than she was and very wealthy. Paris was awash with rumours about her multiple infidelities, but the social elite clamoured to be around her, nonetheless.
