[In every 700 #Hongkongers, one was arrested because of #HongKongProtests]

1. Since the outbreak of #HKprotests last year, 9672 #HKers have been arrested when they protested against injustice, with 2093 prosecuted.
2. With arrestees from 11yo kid to 84yo elderly, #hkpolice is now staging the biggest political purge across generations in the city, especially at the time when #hkgov attempting to rewrite history, whitewash #policebrutality and censor textbooks.
3. You may wonder what #HKers can still do under draconian #nationalsecuritylaw, arbitrary arrests, unchecked police violence that even targets pregnant women, and also the detentions of 12 asylum seekers in #China, with their fate still unknown for nearly 2 weeks.

[Detainee faces indefinite detention & tortures in #HK]

1. A detainee from #India on hunger strike was brutally beaten by officers at Castle Peak Bay Immigration Center (CIC, aka "black prison"), before unwillingly sending to hospital for forced injection, per @appledaily_hk.
2. The victim, Vikramjeet Singh, was severely assaulted in a place not covered by CCTV cameras, with multiple bruises on wrists, arms and legs, as well as broken bones in chest and back. Impatient with Singh’s hunger strike, officers even scolded him, “go to die!”
3. Although #hkpolice claimed they would investigate the case, Singh has not given any copy of statement for more than 4 days since August 18, nor any case number. Worse still, #police prohibited Singh’s friends from taking pictures of his wounds for no reason.

[#HKers calling on #Cellebrite to halt selling phone hacking technologies to #Belarus] #standwithbelarus

1/ Phone hacking tech is one of the weapons abused by authoritarian regimes to stamp out dissidents, in particular, crackdowns on leaderless movements in both Belarus and HK.
2/ Solely in #Hongkong, throughout #hkprotests last year, #hkpolice has been using Cellebrite's hacking technology to crack at least 4000 #Hkprotesters’ phones without consent, with our private conversation used by authoritarian regimes for political purges.
3/ Recently, a group of Israeli human rights lawyers have found that the investigation units of dictatorship in #Belarus have been using Cellebrite's forensic system, #UFED Touch, to break the defence systems in smartphones.

[In the face of tyranny, #Hongkongers stand with the oppressed #Belarusian]

1. Although #police unreasonably fired rubber bullets and tear gas at protesters last week, tens of thousands of #Belarusian still took to streets and voiced their anger on #policebrutality.
2. From them, we can see the people’s courage, robust bonding with each other and their resolute determination for justice and democracy. These are what autocratic regimes cannot crush. These are what dictators fear most.
3. When scrolling through their biggest telegram channel, NEXTA Live, time and again I am impressed by #Belarusians’ creativity and vibrancy, when people generously provide shelters and donate medical resources.

[My thought after HK police issued arrest warrants to my friends]
patreon.com/posts/39964797/

1/When #HKers hope to secure a historic majority in the upcoming election, Gov postponed election & asked #Beijing to deal with whether and how incumbent lawmakers can extend their tenure.
2/ It is widely expected that #Beijing will tighten its curb on the city’s legislature by setting up new rubber-stamp legislature without real oppositions. The rubber-stamp legislature is not new to #Hongkong.
3/ Earlier in 1997, #Beijing has once set up a provisional legislature with #Beijing handpicked members and no mandate from voters. The body had passed several draconian bills including stricter restrictions on assemblies, demonstrations and associations.

[I was just disqualified from LegCo election, despite being the biggest winner in #Hkprimaries]

1. Few minutes ago, I was just disqualified from running in the upcoming LegCo election in #Hongkong, even though I got the highest vote share in the primary, w/ 30000+ votes obtained
2. The excuse they use is that I describe #nationalsecuritylaw as a draconian law, which shows that I do not support this sweeping law.
3. Despite 610,000+ #Hongkongers voting in #HK’s primary, #Beijing now staged the biggest-ever crackdowns on the city’s election, by disqualifying nearly all pro-democracy runners, from young progressive groups to traditional moderate parties.

[When op-eds, open letters and speeches at public hearings become excuses of political screening]

1. Today I received the letter from #Hongkong's electoral officer, questioning my political stance, a ploy commonly used by #Beijing to disqualify candidates from election.
2. The letter quotes following as excuses:
-@appledaily_hk coverage of my speech at @CECCgov public hearing on #HK autonomy
-my @washingtonpost op-ed commenting on #Beijing’s move to expelling US journalists
-an open letter to @SecPompeo co-signed by disbanded @demosisto & #HKers
3. Clearly, under the new #nationalsecuritylaw, political screening covers candidates’ social media accounts, media interviews and election flyers. Even an op-ed piece could be framed as “colluding with foreign forces” and used as excuses for political purges.

1. Today is the last day for our pro-democracy primaries. Over 230,000 #HKers have already cast their votes yesterday, well exceeding the original target turnout. With this significant turnout, I am really proud of everyone who has queued and waited in the summer heat.
2. One day more for our last free election, our new target will be 500,000, which amounts to 30% of votes in pro-democracy camp and 10% of the total registered voter in #Hongkong.
3. With 500,000 HKers casting their ballots amid #Beijing’s threats and sweeping #nationalsecuritylaw, our determination would send a strong message to the world: #Hongkongers will not surrender. No matter how repressive the regime goes against us, we will not bow to tyranny.

[First day of national security law: #HKers will not surrender]

1/ When #Beijing has defied social oppositions and enacted the sweeping #nationalsecuritylaw in #HK, The UK government has offered an important lifeboat by opening path to citizenship for #HKers.
2/ However, leaving the place where we grow up is just the last resort. More HKers pledge to continue our fight for liberty and democracy. Therefore, even for the first day that the national security law came into effect, hundred thousands protesters took to the street.
3/ Under the new law, Hongkongers are prone to no public trials, no bail, no jury trial, no rights to silence or even extradition to China’s courts. Judges involving in those cases have to be first screened by Beijing.

[One year later, #Policebrutality intensifies]

1. A year ago, millions of #HKers flocked to streets to oppose #AntiExtradition bill & #PoliceViolence. It was the time when demonstrations, protests, strikes, petitions, forming human chains & singing #GlorytoHongKong were permitted Image
2. One year later, #Hongkongers and the world bear witness to #Beijing's growing direct control on the city’s vanishing liberty. Ordinary citizens are stabbed by pro-#Beijing mobs, smashed to the ground and arrested by #hkpolice just because they sing in public. ImageImageImage
3. This is the time when teachers are fired for refusing to censor students, and even a satirical show was halted for mentioning #policebrutality. Image

1/ Despite foreign doubts and #Hongkongers’ criticism, #NPC just passed #nationalsecuritylegislation. # China unilaterally imposes the law with its legislation entirely under a black box, with no legislative scrutiny and public consultation.
2/ Today’s decision is a direct assault on the will of #HKers. China is scrapping its promise of autonomy under the Joint Declaration, a legally binding international treaty, & burying 1Country2System when a #secretpolice agency can enforce #China’s laws within territory of HK.
3/ Up to now, #Beijing loyalists keep downplaying the adverse impacts on HK’s judicial independence & civil liberties. Under similar law in China, people seeking justice for #TiananmenMassacre, supporting HKProtest were sentenced to jail. It might kill HK’s democratic movements.

1/ From anti-extradition law to anti-national security law, more than thousands of #Hongkongers took to streets to protest against this highly controversial law since the new law will kill future democratic movements, and murder any slight chance to seeking justice in the city.
2/ It's fiercely imposed by Beijing upon the will of #HKers, without legislative scrutiny. Even tens of thousands of #HKers showed their outcry against draconian law, #hkpolice crushed dissents with armed vehicles, water cannons, teargas & pepper balls but #YouCantStopUs!
3/ The proposed national security agency is like the #secretpolice branch in HK. The biggest concern is arbitrary & political interpretation of the law, When using the law in China, lawyers, reporters, NGOs, religious groups were accused of “inciting subversion”.

1/ Three #hongkongers were slashed by a pro-#Beijing mob with a beef knife, with wounds on her left chest and chin, broken ribs, lungs collapsed with blood, suffering from post-traumatic stress, when handing out leaflets at #lennonwalls last night
2/ But #HK Judge offered sympathy to the assailant, without slamming his cruel move during sentencing yesterday. Instead, he violated his impartiality by spending one-third of the time criticizing #HKprotests & comparing victims that just delivered leaflets as "terrorist army”.
3/ He even praised the assailant as "an involuntary sacrifice and a bloodstained victim hanging by his last breath”, while the victims, the ones truly laying in blood, were slammed as "ruthlessly trampled on his right to work, live and survive.”

1/ It is my honor to share with @MarshaBlackburn the latest update in #HK on the call. #Beijing & #Hkgov prioritize crackdown of dissidence over health of #HKers. Director of #China’s office in #HK even called democracy movement as “political #coronavirus” & urged to suppress.
2/ HKGov use new #coronavirus restrictions to suppress protest. Police disproportionately target pro-democracy stores, being checked twice every 15 minutes. When police instruct to line up for body search, bystanders were framed as violating 4 person limit on public gatherings.
3/ Draconian laws strengthen authoritarian-inclined leaders’ grip on the city’s liberties. but it only makes more HKerds support democracy in HK. In our cause for democracy, we hope the world can continue to #standwithhk & confront Beijing crackdown.

In this worldwide battle against #CoronavirusPandemic originated from #China. we can fight together & overcome this war.

1/ For #HKers, we have learnt a bitter lesson during 2003 SARS outbreak with 299 deaths. Ppl know that the Chinese government often cover up the outbreak.
2/ Learnt from our experiences, #Hongkongers share some secret remedies to combat the virus - wearing masks, staying at home, travelling less and being critical about the government’s words.
3/ While HK leader #CarrieLam acts against medical experts’ advice & asks ppl not to wear masks, we simply disregard unscientific restrictions & secure mask supplies by ourselves. We even call for border seal with China to stop spread of #WuhanCoronavirus originated from #China.

THREAD: To #HKers, I make this appeal:

I love you, I love your city, it was once my home & I will always fight for you & for #HongKong

You are at your best when you hold the moral high ground, when you protest in peace, for that is when you will win the hearts of the world 1/3
I understand the anger, desperation, frustration that might lead a few of you to contemplate violence

You face a #HongKongPolice that perpetrates violence with impunity, indiscriminately, totally disproportionately & with extremity, every day

You have a human urge to fight back 2/3
But nevertheless, bricks & molotov cocktails have already lost the hearts of some.

Bombs would only make your situation worse

So I plead with #HongKong friends who are bravely protesting for freedom & whose struggle is my struggle:

Fight for hearts & minds, NOT bodies & blood

1/ Six months after the passing of #HKHumanRightsandDemocracyAct, #US @StateDept will deliver its first annual certification of Hong Kong’s autonomy as specified in the Act. The Act is designed to safeguard #HK’s autonomy and freedoms from #China’s growing influence.
2/ However, over past 8 months, #Beijing and #HKGov have intensified its strong-arm policies on #HKers. Extra 2.5 billion dollars have been spent on expanding police forces, with its budget on purchasing teargas & rubber bullets tripled.
3/ Clearly, #China plans another bloody crackdown upon pro-democracy #hongkongprotests. Not to mention that #China is imposing a new sinofication on the city and turning #Hongkong into another Mainland city.

Dr. Pak-Leung Ho, head of Centre for infection at @hkumed, thinks it was due to the stepped-up vigilance of #HKers that no. of #COVID19 cases in #HK didn't skyrocket like Iran and Italy. He highlighted universal mask-wearing as one of the reasons widespread outbreak didn't occur.
#HKers started wearing masks, universally and regardless of symptoms, even before the 1st confirmed case emerged in the city. Some say panic, some say unnecessary, some say cultural difference, but it is really down to our collective experience of #SARS.
17 yrs ago #HKers learnt the impact of a disease outbreak at the cost of 299 lives. We knew if it starts in China, sooner or later it will reach #HK. Afterall, in the 1st week of Feb alone, 100,000 mainlanders entered HK, not to mention returning HK citizens.

Amid #Coronavirus menace, pro-#CCP lawmakers today hold extra meetings to discuss #HKpolice pay rises, despite majority of #HKers’ opposing the rise. According to the poll, popularity rating of police hit a record low: 40% of population giving zero marks on police performance.
However, just on the same day of the meeting, #hongkongpolice carries new rounds of political persecution by arresting key pro-democracy figures including Lee Cheuk Yan, Yeung Sum and pro-democracy media tycoon Jimmy Lai.
Over the past two months, #hkgov has demonstrated its governance failure. When the civil society is busy ensuring our mask supplies overseas and helping #Hongkongers to stay away from the virus, #HKpolice opts to suppress all opposition to the police pay rise.

1/ Arrested on August 30, my phone was seized by #hkpolice. The phone can only be unlocked with passwords. Before court resumed yesterday, I have NEVER provided any passwords to #police, nor received any notice nor warrant for a search of my mobile device.
2/ However, #hkpolice yesterday submitted an evidence list, which allegedly included 4 text messages of mine from iPhone XR. Police can even identify how the messages were sent out, whether it's from a mobile or desktop version of the app.
3/ Since such functions can't be found on ordinary user interface, that can only be possible with the help of state-sponsored hacking. It's utterly alarming that police begins to hack mobile devices of #HKers, just like #China hacking iPhones & Android devices to target #Uyghurs.

A possible theory about the whole #HK #antiELAB. I believe it’s all about money. The #ELAB, was for that purpose: /1
1. China financial health is currently under serious stress, and needs money, in the level of trillions, quick. Who has that much money #China can access? Hong Kong /2
2. Passage of #ELAB law will help China 2 arrest anyone #China like, & in the process call confiscate all their wealth. Public options believe #CCP only interested in #Xi political rivals. But if u need a lot of money and u have decided 2 support Mao policies, why stop there? /3
