A beer league #hockey story for you. From one referee to the Internet.

Last night I lined a game in Amsterdam that was a salve on my wounded soul. It was a beautiful game. It had some drama, but it was a wonderful game and great camaraderie between the teams after the match.
But as I pointed out, I entered the game with a wounded soul. I spent the previous 24 hours aggrieved, wondering if it was worth continuing to play this sport at all. At times, I was done. At times, I was emboldened to solve the problems I was confronted with.
Above all, I thank my wonderful wife for letting me rant at her about this, and letting me get it out of my system. That was tremendously helpful.

But getting around to the point...

I’m hearing disturbing stories coming out of the @uLethbridge and it’s hockey program

It is an ongoing problem for the women’s program currently

Former coaches of the university include Mike Babcock and Bill Peters

Why am I not surprised?

1) Today marks the 30th anniversary of the start of the #VelvetRevolution. Although I didn’t realize it at the time, this moment triggered a chain of events that would indirectly affect me in a myriad of ways. This #story is a bit rambling, but please hear me out…
2) First, let’s back things up to 3/31/90 - the final day of the #NHL regular season. I listened to the @penguins v. @BuffaloSabres on @KDKA 1020, as usual. But this was no ordinary game.
3) The #Pens needed a tie or win to advance to the playoffs. Also, #MarioLemieux was back in action for the first time in months. The stakes were high. I was 14 years old. This game meant the world to me. .

So yeah, @CoachsCornerDC is pretty much the worst in old white maleness, the worst in Canadian sports culture, the worst in #hockey culture, and screaming mediocrity between the end boards. Yank this bush-leaguer off the pond - the final buzzer sounded decades ago. 1/x
2 Cherry’s racist #poppyrant attack on immigrants roused his boss, Bart Yabsley, to a sitting position from which he authorized a @RogersMediaPR statement claiming that someone (“we”) at @Sportsnet had “spoken with Don about the severity of the issue.” 2/x
3 One imagines the end of this call: “Yeah well none of it matters now Don” crack splutz “you’re fired” bip bip bip “Don? Don? Still there?”

However it went down, @rogersmedia, #youpeople are still on the hook to deliver that message. You see, you have shat where you eat. 3/x

With the opt in/out date deadline on Jan 18th 4 the @NHL #concussion lawsuit I wanted to revisit this breakdown from @SheillaDingus on the red flags of the settlement:

1/ A potential life & death situation is noted, in which the #NHL says “live or die...…
we don’t care, just don’t ask us for any money.” Players are instructed to file a claim from the Additional Payment Fund—if they live long enough

2/ The NHL control of testing procedure immediately drew a red flag. It is notable that the cost of testing is NOT included....
in the total value of the settlement but is instead an uncapped fund under COMPLETE control of the NHL

It seems odd that no one to my knowledge has reported this

“In the big picture the cost of these exams is de minimus, particularly when the NHL is in control of these exams”

Here's how this'll work: Each book I mention will have a blurb, a cover image, buy links from @justonemorepage wherever possible, and a @librofm link if I particularly enjoyed the audiobook.

WICKED AND THE WALLFLOWER by @sarahmaclean: My favorite book of the year, and my fave of Sarah's books. Thrilling, passionate, sexy as hell, incredibly moving, and a heroine that is EVERYTHING to me. Do yourself a favor and pick this up immediately.

THE POET X by @AcevedoWrites: This won the NBA for a reason, and it's the same reason I cried on the Metro listening to this audiobook at 9:30 on a Wednesday. Even months later this book gives me chills. Listen to it now.

Yes the Men's semi v Malaysia was a let down, but beyond opportunity for a gold, jingoism and flag waving, India lost something far more valuable and of practical utility: #AsianGames winners get ticket to the Olympics. #hockey
The route available now is long-drawn and littered with banana skins. Here's the fruit salad of competitions India must digest to make it to Tokyo 2020. It's the same for the Men's and the Women's teams, differing of course, only in the rankings #hockey
