Still lack of checks at airports. We know about Brazilian & S.African variants so why not close off the air corridors?

Victoria Aitkins: “Travel measures take a little bit of time...There’s a delicate balancing act btw controlling the virus & the economy”
Ystdy, @YvetteCooperMP asked the PM what the govt are doing to stop new S.African variant spreading in the UK.

Why have people been able to travel from SA to UK for last 4wks without being tested & can go on public transport.

@BorisJohnson didn’t know!
“Oh god!”

Questioned about his govt’s repeated inexplicable failures to try & control #COVID19 at airports & lack of action to protect the UK from a new Brazilian variant of #coronavirus @BorisJohnson appeared to mutter “oh god” under his breath.

1). Patrick Vallance tells the @CommonsSTC that SAGE advised the govt to impose lockdown measures “as soon as possible” “on the 18th or 16th of March, I can’t remember”

Remarkable that he doesn’t recall the date.

He fails to explain why the govt wait a week before locking down?
2). Professor @JeremyFarrar, who is a member of SAGE, does remember.

He has just clarified that on 13 March - with #COVID infections doubling every 2-3 days - SAGE decided a lockdown was needed.

They advised the govt of this on 16 March.

UK locked down on 23 March.

Modeller, Prof Edmunds, told #Marr: “We should have gone into lockdown earlier…I think that has cost a lot of lives.”

An Oxford Uni study of countries listed in order of readiness for easing coronavirus lockdown, puts UK at 191st out of 195.
3/. “I think it's extraordinarily risky. I don’t think anyone could believe, from the scientific point of view, that this is a wise move.”

Former CSA, Sir David King, thinks easing lockdown “too quickly" makes the risk of a second wave "very significant".

1/. We know elderly people were sent to care homes from hospital without testing, but it is also happened with home care, on a massive scale.

2/. Dr Townsend told MPs at the Select Committee today:

"Although it hasn’t been reported, people have been discharged from hospitals to home care without testing."

1/. It’s 3 months since I stumbled upon what may turn out to be one of the greatest scandals of modern British history: the #HerdImmunityScandal.

On 8 March, after a tip off, I found the clip of the PM’s #TakeItOnTheChin comment.

I tweeted it & it was viewed 2.5m in 24 hours.
2/. Some questions raised by the #TakeItOnTheChin clip were answered by @peston No.10-sourced piece on 12 March revealing the govt’s #coronavirus “strategy” was #herdimmunity.

But then on 16 April, @peterjukes shared another tip off: the #GreenwichSpeech
3/. In this speech, made on 3 February, @BorisJohnson mentions #coronavirus for the first time & warns there’s a danger it will “trigger panic & [measures] that go beyond what’s medically rational to the point of doing real & unnecessary economic damage.”

The smoking gun of govt care home policy?

Govt advice from 2 April.

“Some of these patients may have #COVOD19. All can be cared for in care homes.”

“Negative tests are not required before transfer/admission to the care home.” #coronavirus via @Goldbug40 gov.uk/government/pub…
Here’s a link to the PDF (p.4).

What’s almost as shocking as this document is the fact that it’s been in the public domain for 6 weeks & no journalist has looked at it.

The same happened with PM’s #GreenwichSpeech from 2 Feb which I posted a month ago. assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/upl…
If you haven’t seen @borisjohnson’s #GreenwichSpeech you can view it here👇

It’s the smoking gun of the govt’s #HerdImmunity strategy. The entire #THREAD is well worth a read if you have a bit of time on your hands. #COVID19 #coronavirus #COVIDー19 #Covid
