I feel like I must be missing something with this new paper on the Gona #Homoerectus. The story is that Mode 1 and Mode 2 artifacts are found at both sites. Since when did anybody think that Acheulean (Mode 2) assemblages lacked any flake cores (Mode 1)? doi.org/10.1126/sciadv… 
The paper has no quantitative comparisons with other sites to substantiate that these sites are unique or interesting in the mixed presence of various artifact and core types. The only intersite comparison is with bifaces from Konso. Interesting but doesn't demonstrate anything.
I'm just struggling to work out why this is not a simple case of two unsurprising Acheulean assemblages. The bifaces are chunky as in other African assemblages of broadly similar age, with flake tools and unshaped cores. There's no evidence of any mix of different things.
