It is said that on June 11, 🇭🇰 people protesting in the street were beaten by 🇨🇳 patriotic international students from @unisouthampton in Southampton, and the students then posted the video on a instant messaging app to show off.

This is the first time I travel abroad using this refugee travel doc since I was granted asylum in the US. I've always said that I am just lucky in this process while thousands of #Hongkongers & #Uyghurs struggle to see progress on their asylum applications . 🧵US lifeboat policy Image
US asylees & refugees typically can’t leave the country. A refugee travel document acts in place of a passport for those who can no longer use their original passport to ensure (but not guarantee) that they can re-enter the country under circumstances. 2/
To get a travel doc, first you have to be granted asylum. But that itself is alrdy a long process to go thru. Applicants can be left waiting for as long as 10 years for the interview, during which they hv to be in the US and can only apply to work after 180 days after filing. 3/

On this 33rd anniversary of the #VelvetRevolution - we reclaim our revolution, our democracy, our freedom, and our friends.
His Holiness @DalaiLama was the first foreign leader and friend President #Havel welcomed.

Mr. Havel didn't befriend him because of his military or economy. He befriended a leader who fled his home, who was not recognized by the world, and whose people faced annihilation.
President #Havel sought alliance and friendship with one who yearned to be free - who believed that truth and love must prevail over lies and hatred in the face of naked aggression and brutal repression.

#HongKongers need the same friendship from you - the Czech people - today.

Sun afternoon, PRC consulate, Manchester: people from consulate exited gate to tear down satirical Xi Jinping pic, then dragged protesters inside compound & roughed them up before police arrived & separated them. No arrests reported.
This is the satirical picture that protesters exhibited outside Manchester PRC consulate & people from consulate apparently took exception to. We deplore their attack on protesters on UK territory.
A photo of a Manchester police officer rescuing a protester from PRC consulate people (presumably staff) who tried to pull the protester into the consulate compound, dragged him by the hair and put fingers in his eyes.

1/ 3 years since the cross-border terrorist attack in #YuenLong, the #HongKong authorities are still concealing the truth. It's clear that the attack is well-coordinated by those in power behind the scene. If not, school heads in the district won't get the reminder ahead. A 🧵
2/ Max Chung & I felt it was our duty to light up the candle and curse the darkness. Therefore, we launched the Take Back #YuenLong / Liberate YL protest on the July 27. For sure, the police won't let us through by using many technical reasons.
3/ We fought hard at the appeal board we couldn't make it. As the protest has been well-advertised, #HongKongers flock to the satellite town on the day anyway.
Village leaders tried to negotiate w/ us before the day but have been called off as they blocked the protest permit.

3 years ago today, an event changed #HongKong forever: The police dispersed #antiELAB protesters outside of #LegCo on #Jun12. It marks the start of the (last) pro-democracy struggle of the city. A thread. (1/9)
At the moment when the police fired their first shot, I was being interviewed by the PTS #Taiwan. Link: bit.ly/3xi7STc. After the interview, I headed back to CITIC Tower and see what I could help. (2/9)
The atrium of the building was full of smoke and people were being treated by volunteer first responders. The police didn’t stop firing the teat gas outside of the LegCo and subsequently cleared off the area. The rest is history. (3/9)

Just now: A Mandarin-speaking man attacked a Hong Kong student at @Cornell for putting up posters supporting freedom of #HongKong and #Uyghurs. This man's action & any kind of Chinese aggression against #Hongkongers should never be acceptable. Here's what happened:
Around 18:30, as a Cornell student was putting "#FreeHongKong" & "#FreeUyghurs" posters up in Ithanca Commons near Cornell, a man approached to threaten him in Mandarin. The student immediately recorded the scene with his phone. (2/) @SPEAL_Cornell
The man then pushed him to the ground and tried to snatch his phone away, leaving wounds on his hand. The assault only ended as another passerby interrupted. (3/) @SPEAL_Cornell @students4hk Image

The four trustees of the "612 Humanitarian Fund" in #HongKong were released on bail late last night. However, @laiyanhoeric said the arrest indicates that the #NSL is now weaponized to crack down on non-violent public activities in the city. My latest: dw.com/zh/612%E5%9F%B…
According to @hk01official, the police suspected that the fund's trustees began to "collude with foreign forces" prior to the imposition of the #NSL. It cited evidence including the fund was used to support members of #HongKong's civil society organization to ...
... to go to the UK and Geneva to lobby support from foreign lawmakers and "smear #HongKong." The police also suspected that the fund provided medical and legal support to NGOs in #Taiwan as well as Hong Kongers in Canada.

THREAD: I want to share a few reflections & principles about why - & how - I try to support #HongKong's #FightForFreedom, have done so for the past 8 years

1. The most important point is that I have never, ever claimed to represent #HongKongers. All I try to do is support /
2. #HongKongers are among the most courageous, intelligent, creative, articulate, eloquent, brilliant people I know, and they're more than capable for speaking for themselves. I don't speak on their behalf, ever - I merely try to speak in support of and solidarity with them/
And why? For the following reasons:

1. #HongKong was once my home, it was where I began my career as a journalist & activist, & so I believe I have a responsibility to help fight for its future /

What an honour. A full page in #HongKong's #CCP Ta Kung Pao

First they deny me entry

Then they send me, my neighbours, mother & employers threats, lobby UK MPs to try to silence me, and send fake emails

Then they threaten me under #NationalSecurityLaw

Now it's Ta Kung Pao :)
To break it down, bit by bit, here's the first part :)

My response: if speaking out for the freedoms, democracy, human rights, rule of law & autonomy which #HongKong was promised under an international treaty and which #CCP has betrayed is a crime, then I plead very, very guilty
I did live in #HongKong for the first five years after the handover, from 1997-2002, where I worked as a journalist.

I love #HK and #HongKongers

If criticising #CCP and its quislings in HK is a crime, then I plead guilty - but guilty of telling the truth, not guilty of smearing

A huge privilege to be at the totally packed London premiere of @RoOT_film, a profoundly moving & powerful film about #HongKong's #FightForFreedom, & Q&A with the courageous director afterwards

Huge congratulations to @nathanlawkc @HKFF_UK /
It was deeply moving to sing Glory to Hong Kong at the end & give the director standing applause along with hundreds of wonderful #HongKongers

This film is banned in #HongKong & I probably committed another #NationalSecurityLaw crime by going to see it, but I highly recommend it
I urge everyone who has the opportunity to go see @RoOT_film

THREAD: Some reflections on @ReginaIplau very kind tribute to my work & that of @hk_watch, which is much appreciated

However:

1. I was denied entry to #HongKong by #CCP in Oct 2017. So if she wants to draw parallels between me & #ChristineLee, perhaps UK should expel Ms Lee? /
2. The parallel, however, is ridiculous. I do not live in #HongKong, I have not influenced anyone in #HK, I have not donated any money to anyone in HK. I have merely expressed opinions & conducted advocacy in support of the wishes of #HongKongers.

In contrast to Ms Lee/
3. Ms Lee has allegedly donated funds to political parties in UK, gained access to Parliament, and, it seems, may have spied and lied on behalf of the #CCP

I have never even visited Legco in #HongKong (I went to old Legco when I lived there from 1997-2002 but that's different)/

THREAD: @AmbZhengZeguang - welcome to UK

I have 10 questions for you

1. Millions of #Uyghurs are in prison camps, women forcibly sterilised, people used for slave labour, horrific torture & sexual violence reported /
The evidence is there, & increasingly experts recognise it as genocide. Why are you doing this to Uyghurs & why won't you allow international, independent monitors to visit unrestricted?/
2. Why have you torn up an international treaty, lodged at the UN, valid until 2047, in which you promised to protect #HongKong's autonomy, freedoms, rule of law and basic human rights? Why has your regime destroyed #HongKongers' freedoms?

Gurkhas and the British

Men from the hillsides of Nepal began joining the British Army in 1815,right after the end of the 1st phase of the Anglo-Gurkha War of 1814-16.They have been serving the British Crown ever since.#Gurkha #Gurkhas #Nepal #ENGITA #Eng scmp.com/week-asia/opin…
The Gurkhas played an essential role in establishing the British Raj in India and fought for the British in Afghanistan, what was then Burma, Tibet and in countless other conflicts.

In the first world war alone, tiny Nepal, with a population of around 5 million, sent over 200,000 Gurkhas to fight for the British. 1 in 10 never returned. In the second world war over 250,000 Gurkhas fought alongside the British and more than 33,000 never returned.

THREAD: Mr Tang: Wrong!

Your quisling government & its #CCP puppet masters are to blame

You, your police officers, your fellow quisling proxy zombies & the dictatorship you slavishly work for are covered in blood, Mr Tang

And in the next tweet in this thread I'll explain why/
Point by point:

1. If #CCP had kept its promise to allow "one country, two systems" & "#HongKong people running HongKong" & upheld basic freedoms, human rights & rule of law, we would not see the tragedy we see today/
2. If your quisling regime had not introduced the idiotic extradition bill in 2019, we might not be where we are today

3. If your quisling regime had listened to the millions of totally peaceful #HongKongers in 2019, we would not be where we are today

THREAD: Delighted that @ShaunBaileyUK, @Conservatives candidate for #MayorofLondon, has put action in response to the Chinese Communist Party in his manifesto

He promises City Hall sanctions on China until
it stops human rights abuses & sets out how/

See bit.ly/32DfKzz
He says:

"China is undermining human
rights in #HongKong through it’s
oppressive national security law and
committing genocide against #Uyghurs
in Xinjiang. I have repeatedly
called for the @MayorofLondon to use
City Hall’s influence to stand up to
China"
"City Hall’s extensive links to Beijing means that this is an action well within the Mayor’s remit. I will implement City Hall sanctions on China. I will end the twinning arrangement between London and Beijing"/

[The world please stands with #Thailand]

1. To stamp out pursuers for #Thailanddemocracy, a sweeping emergency decree was just announced, under which #Thai government banned mass gatherings, imposed media meltdown and can mobilize troops to crack down dissents.
2. At least 27 activists, including prominent figures Anon Nampa, Prasit Karutarote, Parit “Penguin” Chiwarak @paritchi, Panusaya Sithijirawattanakul & Nutchanon Pairoj, were arrested. Police can intercept citizens’ communications, impose travel bans on Thais & deport foreigners.
3. Under the decree, media meltdown was imposed, banning media nationwide from publishing news or info (incl online) that are regarded by the regime as “inciting fear among the public”. International media like @BBCWorld and @CNN covering #ม็อบ14ตุลา in Thailand were blocked.

[Phone repair specialist arrested for possessing client's phone]

1. Upon release, I'd like to take opportunity to call attention to other unreasonable arrests. A phone repair shop owner was arrested in Sep for possessing clients' phones #NationalSecurityBureau claim suspicious. Image
2. Utterly unacceptable that he has been detained for weeks, although those phones don't even belong to him. His bid for bail was repeatedly denied. Before his arrest, he was reportedly harassed by cops after refusing service to #HKpolice to show support against #policebrutality. Image
3. Worse still, he may face graver charges if #police crack his clients' phones w/ phone hacking tools like #Cellebrite & find any suspicious conversations. He hopes his bail can be granted & #12hkyouths can come back safe.

After all, #Hongkongers hope he can be released soon. Image

[#AntiELAB Movement vs #UmbrellaMovement: are #HKers walking on the old path?]

1.1/ #HK's protests have indeed reduced due to the #COVID19 and the #NationalSecurityLaw. #HKGov mass arrests protestors, and crackdown on the education, mass media, medical and judicial industries. Image
1.2/ But, NO, we're not walking the old path of division between different sides in the pro-democracy bloc. In fact, we're winning. Here's why: Image
2/ In 2014,
- 70% of polls call for the occupation to stop
- Division within Pro-democracy bloc
- Average results in the District Council Election
- Pro-Beijing bloc gained 57% seats in Legislative Council
- #CCP's economic diplomacy is doing well
- Few countries support HK Image

[Arrests at #hkprotests hit 10,000 milestone]

1. Since #HongKongProtests last year, 10,000+ HKers were arrested with nearly 400 arrests solely in the past two months. It implies in every 700 #Hongkongers, one has been detained due to protests or #hkpolice’s arbitrary arrests. Image
2. While most are charged w/ rioting & illegal assemblies, the figure clearly indicates freedom of assembly is under assault amid #Beijing’s mounting influence. With the prosecution rate much lower than arrests, it suggests arbitrary arrest is a tactic to scare off protesters.
3. In fact, #policebrutality intensifies, especially with pregnant woman and 12yo girl forcibly tackled to ground, and a #HKer dragged along the ground just because he urged resuming election & demand releasing 12 HK #Asylumseekers now detained in #China’s prison. #save12hkyouth
