[thread] on #Horizon2020 & science

And #Yorkshire

Let's go back to 2015
The figure is the highest of any region in the UK

the UK as a whole is the single largest beneficiary of the programme, ahead of Germany, Spain, Italy and France.

The UK will see a 46% increase in funding in the next 4 years, up to £8.5bn - 20% of all the grants signed off
"News of the increased Yorkshire funding has been welcomed by the head of Science City York, Heather Niven, who said it was “fantastic news” for both universities and business communities in the region. "

Just out #openaccess in @PRXjournal : my IMHO so far best text on #farright #protest #rituals in #Germany during & beyond pandemic 🥳 It deals with the puzzle of #movement persistence from an #ethnographic perspective (1/5) tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.10…
I argue that the ritualization of #protest is strongly linked to #movement persistence. Basically: when participants believe in the deeper sense of the protest #ritual, they take to the streets despite a lack of both resources & external triggers (2/5)
I draw on my by now >2y #fieldwork in the #German #farright #noPegida that survives in #Dresden for already 8y against all odds (in fact they happen to demonstrate tonight for sth like an “anniversary” - my take on earlier versions blogs.lse.ac.uk/europpblog/202…) (3/5)

After some recent experiences, here some thoughts on patient involvement in research, in particular for my colleagues in patient advocacy. A 🧵
An increasing number of grant agencies ask for patient involvement in research projects. That's usually after political pressure, like when evaluations show that the public doesn't seen the value of innovation and research- like with #Horizon2020
Or when people realise that vested interests of diverse parties prevent progress and that having the very person in whose interest everyone *claims* to act in the room tends to unblock things....

The 'Empowering Energy Poor Citizens through Joint Energy Initiatives' webinar just kicked off!

The first topic on the agenda: learning more on the #EnergyPoverty Advisory Hub.

The good news: #POWERPOOR is included the #EPAH Atlas!

⚡️If you want to find out more on what #EPAH is doing and all the tools that they offer, visit energy-poverty.ec.europa.eu/index_en
@h_doukas gave an extraordinary presentation on the #POWERPOOR project. Those are the main tools that are available to be used in alleviating #energypoverty. But as he said, 'the Energy Suporters and Mentors are the real heroes'!

We are in the midst of a huge technology revolution. In the 2010s, costs for solar PV have decreased by 85%, for wind power by 50% (@REN21 ), and batteries are repeating that pattern. Solar and wind are already the cheapest electricity option in most parts of the world.
However, electricity currently only accounts for 20% of global final energy, because it is the most costly energy carrier. The remaining 80% non-electric are mostly fossil-based. Transitioning non-electric fuels to low-carbon will take much longer than decarbonizing electricity.
We all grew up in a world where firms and consumers pay a lot more for one kWh of electricity than for any other energy carrier. Electricity is the most costly energy carrier, because it is produced by burning fossil fuels at substantial conversion losses.

After the negotiators have come to a final deal on the budget of #HorizonEurope, we can look at the programme and its different aspects.

So what’s in for #SocialSciences and #Humanities?
In fact, #SocialSciences & #Humanities are prominently featured in the regulation, which will be the political and legal foundation of #HorizonEU
