Home Office grudgingly accepts ruling against its appalling treatment of more than 2.5 million settled EU citizens.

Previously the HO planned to appeal, now they will not.
1/
bbc.com/news/uk-politiā€¦
"Robert Palmer KC told the court millions of EU citizens living in the UK risked losing their rights and being treated as "illegal overstayers" as a result."

In the meantime, divisive media messages are having an impact.
2/
Mr Palmer said they would be "exposed to considerable serious consequences affecting their right to live, work and access social security support and housing in the UK, and will be liable to detention and removal".

The #HostileEnvironment made worse by Home Office cruelty - tens of thousands of refugees and migrants are being denied work and benefits they are due.

So the Home Office is being sued.
1/
independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-nā€¦
Allegedly "the Home Office is frustrating the purpose of the law by depriving people of the rights their status is meant to protect."

Some are being made destitute because of the way the HO is treating them.
2/
If this is part of the #HostileEnvironment policies to deter asylum-seekers and migrants, it is cruel, abusive, and unethical,

December deaths in the Channel leave heartbreak as UK approach to saving lives of asylum-seekers AGAIN comes under scrutiny...
1/

It seems as though the Government's approach is to quibble about numbers, borders, and whine about 'legal routes' (which they closed) rather than acknowledge the levels of terror

TORIES ADD CRUEL PRESSURE TO ASYLUM SEEKERS

They plan to level up the #HostileEnvironment by deporting those 'caught' seeking refuge in the UK
telegraph.co.uk/politics/2022/ā€¦
1/
PM Sunak is 'under pressure' from the rest of the soulless Tories, to immediately return people arriving in small boats. This, after they've ended all safe routes into the UK for asylum-seekers.
2/
Their ghastly policy was halted altogether after legal objections were posed by human rights organisations but they are determined to find ways round those by the end of February

BRITAIN COMPLACENT & COMPLICIT IN REFUGEE ABUSE!!

UK government rips up protections for torture victims & asylum seekers, quadrupling times they may be held in processing centres such as Manston
independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-nā€¦
1/
By creating a "second class refugee protection" in a new, undeclared policy to reduce numbers, the Home Office has acted in secrecy to deny full asylum rights on the basis of faster processing

These sneaky moves come amidst accusations the government are 'making it esier to get away with horrors'.

Immigration Minister @RobertJenrick is rewriting the laws, dramatically downgrading standards.

Marcy, my Cameroonian mother in-law, had her visitor visa refused by @ukhomeoffice because she is retired & 'widowed'.

Our family has had too many insulting, dehumanising, inferiating experiences w/ the HO.

Yet the pain, the rage. My trembling, numb fingers. 1/
My mother in-law is NOT a widow.

She has been married for 25 years.

This was clear ALL over her application, if someone @ukhomeoffice had been troubled to actually read it, OR if there was a system of accountability for their egregious errors
I mentioned, again, her marital status (& 'social ties') in my letter of invitation, which was submitted with our materials:

'She will return to her husband, children, and grandchildren in Cameroon at the end of her vacation with us'

From yesterday's @ObserverUK. @UnisNotBorders was cited in this piece about, Sulav Khadka, a migrant student from Nepal who was detained by UK border cops, claiming that he was a bogus student, sent to a detention centre in Scotland, & held for 10 days: theguardian.com/uk-news/2022/nā€¦
šŸ§µ
.@UnisNotBorders stated in the piece that in the 6 years we have provided support for migrant university staff & students, we have come across cases, esp from migrant students who come from the Global South & subjected to harsh immigration questioning by UK border cops.
The piece goes on further to state from another student interrogated by UK border cops that they saw some Pakistani students who "were kept in a separate place for not being able to show [their] bank balance in a mobile app. God knows what happened to them."

Why focus *only* on Nigerians? Would Nick be outraged if 50,000 white Canadians brought their dependents to the UK?

Right-wing pundit, Nick Timothy, is using the 'bogus student' line to promote disastrous Tory policies that will harm working class migrant students.

Brief šŸ§µ
Bringing dependants as a migrant student is both not easy & very expensive. One has to pay visa fees which amount to Ā£1,538 if the dependent is applying outside of the UK. Additionally, dependents have to pay the international health surcharge fee to access the NHS.
In total, if you are family of four, one migrant PGR student, three dependents applying from out of the UK, you are looking at spending Ā£4,977 in visa fees and an additional Ā£10,940 for the international health surcharge fee. And these fees are increasing each year.

From today's @thetimes, where migrant students might be barred from @RussellGroup institutions in order to bring down net migrant statistics.

Typical dog & whistle discourse used to marginalise migrant students. We've seen this many times before.

Short šŸ§µ#UCURising #UCUstrike
Mid-2000s the discourse of the 'bogus migrant student' took hold of the UK right-wing media, making outrageous claims that *all* migrant students were illegally entering the UK on student visas. @UKLabour responded by instituting the first forays that started #HostileEnvironment. Image
When @GordonBrown was PM, he started the points based immigration system (PBIS) that ushered in immigration checks in universities on migrant student *and* staff. In 2009, SOAS Management used these checks to break apart the migrant-led @SOASJ4C campaign, deporting 9 activists.

REMEMBER THIS šŸ‘‡ in upcoming debates, if YOUR representative says words to the effect of: "Oh no, we're not trying to destroy #HumanRights. We agree Human Rights are important - honest, guv! - we just don't like the UK #HumanRightsAct and/or the #EuropeanConvention (#ECHR)"...
Such claims are DEMONSTRABLY BULLSHIT if they come from the mouth of *anyone* who supports the position @CPhilpOfficial has espoused, which the @Telegraph has splashed on its front page...
To be clear, #Article4 of #UDHR šŸ‘‡ (also #ECHR and #HRA) is explicit and unambiguous:

"NO ONE shall be held in #slavery or #servitude; slavery and the #slave trade shall be prohibited in all their forms."

We wanted to step up and show our support for the @Care4Calais #StopRwanda campaign.

Since its introduction in 2012 as part of the #HostileEnvironment, the NRPF policy has been found to be unlawful FIVE TIMES šŸšØšŸšØšŸšØ

The NRPF policy continues to breach multiple aspects of basic decency and humanity as written into various laws.

Over a million people in the UK are affected by NRPF, which largely affects people with temporary visas, such as students. In the Covid lockdowns, many were unable to work or get financial aid, some were left starving or lost their homes as a result.

We had reports from our In Limbo members experiencing difficulties at the border trying to return home in the UK even though they are EU citizens with #SettleStatus.

Airlines have asked for additional ID against official guidance.

Many are now anxious when traveling.
Our friends @the3million have reported the same problem of EU citizens refused boarding their flights back to their homes in the UK unless they provide additional ID.

This is unacceptable.

Why is @ukhomeoffice silent on this?

We need physical proof of our immigration status!
This is part of a wider issue, that of the #HostileEnvironment.

Airlines, universities, hospitals, landlords & employers have become border control but are not always well informed.

The issue is a system which is hostile to immigrants & citizens in general, even British ones.

A šŸ§µabout @GNDRising disruption of Home Secretary Priti Patel's talk at the Bassetlaw Conservatives Association dinner.

ThisšŸ§µseeks to critically interrogate this action from the perspective of Black & WoC migrants @UnisNotBorders to develop discussion & better practices.

Is it ethical for @GNDRising, a new NGO, to use funds to pay to ā€œdisruptā€ a Tory dinner attended by right-wing xeno-racist sycophantic followers of Priti Patel who care nothing for migrants? Did @GNDRising think that their disruption would elicit policy change from a fascist?
