What are students saying about Ontarioā€™s #Bill23? On Friday December 9, @westernsogs organized a large public demonstration on #WesternUā€™s campus as part of our effort to spread community awareness of the Bill and what it means for the housing and climate crises. A recap šŸ§µ Image

.@MayorofSeattle: As a teacher of many homeless students in #Seattle over the years & someone w/ homeless family, I demand you apologize to them for saying: ā€œI donā€™t think anyone has a right to sleep in a public space or has a right to sleep on a sidewalkā€

If you donā€™t want my students sleeping on the streets, then provide affordable housing.

We live in one of the richest cities in world history. We have the money to house everyone, but you would rather blame my students for being poor than fix the system that creates poverty.
Itā€™s appalling that the @MayorofSeattle can vilify my homeless students who struggle to find a place to sleep at night, but doesnā€™t have a mumbling word to say about the billionaires who are hoarding the wealth of Seattle & creating the homeless crisis.

Thank you @NLIHC for informing & mobilizing people to protect essential and targeted housing investments in the #BuildBackBetter act. Thread below on why this matters in #NewtonMa /1
For every $5B of that $90B in expanded federal rental assistance, 112K people will receive voucher assistance nationally, including 44K children, 22K people with disabilities, and 12K seniors. Per @CenterOnBudget white paper below #BuildBackBetter /2

Also, wonderfully woven into the #BuildBackBetter act is a clause that doubles production of affordable housing nationally via reform to the Low Income Housing Tax Credit. @RachelFee4NY /3

What more do we need to show you @DenCityCouncil? What will it take for you to help stop the torture?

We vote. And we will in 2023...

...if you vote in favor of this tmrw, you can no longer pretend you care about the thousands of people experiencing homelessness in our city.

Our eviction system is broken and requires urgent redesign.
THREAD below on how @emilyabenfer, @RPhillipsEsq, @KathrynSabbeth & I suggest fixing it in @washingtonpost
1) Congress can ratify the federal moratorium; washingtonpost.com/opinions/2021/ā€¦
2) States canĀ require landlordsĀ to apply for rent relief before filing to evict;
3) States can reform eviction laws to prevent and penalize notice violations, and ensure everyone has the ability to be heard;
4) States can seal tenantsā€™ records;
5) States can guarantee a right to counsel for tenants at risk;
6) The federal government can fund a permanent nationwide rent-relief program;

A thread by BRD for your consideration:

Today is #ArmedForcesDay- too often a day where politicians offer platitudes about sacrifice and gratitude while they continue to send our troops to kill and die in endless wars for profit and power- not justice or freedom. #NoMoreWar /1
They praise us at their events while they gut our healthcare and sidestep accountability for the rampant sexual assault, pollution and abuses on and around our bases. #ArmedForcesDay2021 #MilitaryMeToo #EnvironmentalJustice #AuditThePentagon 2/

As we grapple with LA's failure to house its people, we want to reaffirm a commitment to equity and fairness in our approach. @CamnerLeonora wrote about why it is important for the #yimby movement to center WHERE to put housing and for WHOM:

Abundant Housing LA is building the pro-housing movement for LA. But itā€™s not enough to just be supportive of housing in general. Achieving housing abundance requires thoughtful approaches that center equity, racial justice, and environmentalism.

As City Council votes to resume banishing and criminalizing Unhoused folks today, ~100 ppl living in Chinatownā€™s El Pueblo SECZ are being traumatized by an unexpected sweep, with cops. Thereā€™re positive cases in the community here. Blood on your hands @JoeBuscaino
City sweep teams told us they were on pause due to multiple COVID-19 outbreaks at the mobile showers they drag out at during sweeps (so u can shower while the city trashes your shit). Attempts to reach @LAHomeless abt consistent, transparent messaging to residents go nowhere.
Thanks to the cityā€™s inability to let houseless folks know with regularity when their constitutional rights are gonna be violated, we now have elderly disabled residents scrambling to save belongings in a move that normally takes hours if not the whole nite. #ServicesNotSweeps
