“My homeownership journey started with just a thought in 2012 because after paying rent since 2006 I realized that paying someone else’s mortgage was not helping me progress financially for my future. /1 #bospoli #mapoli #firstgenhome #firstgenfriday #blackwomenimpact
Since being on my own financially at 17,I’ve been very conscious of how to spend $ and living on a budget.Once I started paying rent, other…bills I started a spreadsheet and would record my net income and subtract my bills for each pay period./2 #blackwomenimpact #firstgenfriday
In 2013 I came across MAHA’s website and took the first-time home buyer classes, got educated on the process and realized I had to work on my financial situation first. /3 #firstgenfriday #blackwomenimpact #firstgenhome

As we head into the first full winter of the Coronavirus pandemic, too many Americans lack the financial support, housing protections, and access to health care that are critical to staying safe.

It is a scandal that people are being thrown back out on to the streets in order to resume business as usual. Homelessness has always been a public health crisis, but especially with COVID cases spiking again shelter must be guaranteed as a social right.

metro.co.uk/2020/09/01/rou…
Homelessness surged long before the pandemic because of cruel Government policies - benefit caps driving people into poverty, the decimation of social housing, no-fault evictions.
The pandemic emergency response demonstrated we can shelter people when there is political will, but we know over 20,000 people were still forced out of their homes. Many thousands more fear losing their homes when the eviction ban lifts in a couple of weeks.

📻Check out ACORN Leeds member Sam on BBC Radio Leeds, talking about why tenants across the country are taking action against evictions and rent debt today!
Through our strength in numbers the Government has been forced to extend the eviction ban again, but we need to push them further. They cannot just kick the can down the road, with hundreds of thousands of renters still in arrears, their futures and homes in limbo.
We demand real protection from eviction and a proper solution to the rent debt crisis, so no tenant has to fear homelessness during a pandemic. And we'll be mobilizing from our doorsteps to the street to fight for it today.

🏡 Just over a year ago, the government pledged to end section 21 'No Fault' evictions for good. Under this callous legislation, landlords do not need to provide a single reason for denying tenants a roof over their head. Image
Now, with the ongoing public health crisis plunging renters into yet more uncertainty and our economy in recession, it is more imperative than ever that the government enacts this broken promise.
But with the government lifting its temporary 'ban' on evictions on Monday, and a quarter of a million renters facing homelessness, the reality of the situation couldn't be more opposed to their empty words.

⌛️ Time is running out - the Government must act now to avert a homelessness crisis 🚨 #HousingIsHealth #NoEvictions

Hundreds of thousands of renters have fallen into hardship and arrears and are at risk of eviction when the ban lifts in a week. The Government has left tenants without protection, but we will defend our communities 🛡
We demand the Government write off rent debt accrued during the COVID-19 crisis, make good on their pledge to permanently end no-fault evictions, and extend the eviction ban as they have in Scotland 🚫

🏡 In May, nearly 20 ACORN branches came together to put pressure on the government to extend the temporary eviction ban. Up against the force of our campaigning and our strength in numbers, the government conceded to our demands. Image
📈 In June, we had another month of record growth, with the largest rise in membership in the history of ACORN. We've been taking on and winning more cases then ever, and are fighting tooth and nail to defend our communities.
But now, the government's deadline for lifting the eviction ban is fast approaching at the end of August. We know that thousands of tenants have racked up rent arrears, and are at serious risk of being thrown out onto the streets. Yet again, we must come together to take action.

ANOTHER VICTORY - £380 OF COMPENSATION WON! 🥳

Nina got in touch with us after experiencing months of severe damp in her accommodation. She had water pouring into her room and wall crumbling over where she slept.
But here at ACORN we do not tolerate tenants living in unsafe conditions and being made to pay for the privilege. We supported Nina to take action and communicate her demands to her agency. ✔️
And it worked! As soon as the agency came up against the power of the union, they relented immediately and reimbursed Nina! 🔥

Safe housing is a right, and plays an essential role in stopping the spread of COVID-19. Unsafe living conditions jeopardise the health of tenants. 🏡

🎉🎉 VICTORY - 3 MONTHS OF C-19 RENT ARREARS WAIVED! 🎉🎉

On Monday, we asked you to take part in an email jam supporting Aleesha's fight for a rent waiver! Less than 24 hours after its launch, the letting agent had offered to pay off her rent arrears of £1407.81 in full. ✊ Image
They also offered to return her deposit within 7 days, and are allowing her to 'pay back what she can, when she can, at her discretion'!! Her deposit was returned in full by Thursday, so this win is safely in the bag! ✊
Our member wasn't furloughed, and as a student, isn't eligible for Universal Credit. She tried to negotiate a rent waiver alone, sending numerous letters to be met with either no response or the demand to pay her rent in full. This wasn't just unfair, but impossible.

✊✊ WE’RE ORGANISING AN OUTREACH SESSION ON TENANCY TURNOVER DAY (1 JULY) ✊✊

Our members are organising an outreach session on the tenancy turnover day on the 1st July. There will be a briefing on Zoom on health and safety and logistics a few days before the action - please sign up here: tinyurl.com/y7q6rwjb. Image
With a public health crisis soon to morph into an economic crisis, our work is becoming more pressing than ever during and beyond COVID-19. We need to be empowered to take collective action to uphold tenants' rights and demand the resources our communities deserve. 🔥 Image

It demonstrates the strength of our movement that the Government has already conceded to one of our Housing is Health campaign demands - extending the eviction ban until August 💪 Image
But this is why we can't let up the pressure - we know many tenants are still at risk, trapped in arrears and in rent debt, threatened with bogus eviction notices. Our union won't stand for it ⛔️
We're shifting the balance of power by fighting with our members for rent reductions from their landlords, and joining together to campaign for the Government to cancel rent debt so no tenant is left in the lurch ✊

We will be holding an All Members Meeting and Action Planning at 6.30pm on Zoom on Wednesday 10th of June. It will be a fantastic opportunity to shape our Housing is Health campaign going forward and take a lead on our next action to defend our communities against eviction. Image
We hope to see as many faces as possible in what is set to be a vital day of action planning. With the government's deadline for lifting the eviction ban fast approaching on the 29th June, and a huge surge in evictions predicted for this time, we must defend our communities.
If the government is not prepared to grant tenants the security they both need and deserve, then we must take matters into our own hands. Join us and take a stand to show that #HousingIsHealth.

Members will be taking coordinated across the country to demand rent waivers and stronger protection against eviction. Image
A temporary ban on evictions was only conceded because tenants exercised our collective power. While we have lost income and struggled between paying for rent and food, political leaders have again been missing in action, with many fearful of losing their home once the ban lifts. Image

🥳 On Monday, ACORN Leeds will be turning one. What a year it has been! 🥳

We've won countless cases defending tenants across Leeds, developed a vital support system for our community with our Coronavirus Community Support Network and gained over 180 members in the process 🔥 Image
However, we need to keep on fighting for what's right. Next month, the government is set to lift the temporary ban on evictions we won. This will be a disastrous move for tenants, many of whom are struggling to pay rent or have lost income as a direct result of the crisis.
We are predicting a spike in evictions once this ban lifted, potentially leaving thousands without a roof over their head in the midst of a global pandemic. So, this Monday 25th May, on our birthday, we'll be holding a Day of Action, one month before the ban is lifted.
