The #RightsRemovalBill according to the press has today been “shelved”.

🧵 on why it was not inevitable and why I am not feeling relief.

Note* despite my lifelong commitment to cynicism,
the thread does end with some hope.

Here’s what happened over the last 3 years ⬇️
2🧵Nov 2019 - Conservative Party repeat manifesto commitment to “update” our #HRA.

7 Dec 2020 - Ind HRA Review commissioned by Govt.

✏️ Civil society in their thousands spend months responding & supporting others to respond to protect our Human Rights Act.
3🧵Oct 2021 - IHRAR report to Govt largely saying the HRA works well.

14 Dec 2021- Govt ignore IHRAR and publish a Consultation Paper on a new ‘Bill of Rights’ which weakens protections for people and limits accountability of the state

1/13: 🚨BREAKING NEWS: #LizTruss is the next #PrimeMinister. What could Truss's #HumanRights record mean for the future of the UK?…
2/13: "Truss has a track record of voting against human rights progression in the UK and as prime minister will make policy decisions that will radically change rights protections. The first targets? A new #BillOfRights and the European Convention on Human Rights (#ECHR)."
3/13: "One of Truss's most controversial votes has been against retaining the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights as part of UK law following #Brexit. She remains a member of the Conservative government which proposes to repeal the #HumanRightsAct (#HRA)."

REMEMBER THIS 👇 in upcoming debates, if YOUR representative says words to the effect of: "Oh no, we're not trying to destroy #HumanRights. We agree Human Rights are important - honest, guv! - we just don't like the UK #HumanRightsAct and/or the #EuropeanConvention (#ECHR)"...
Such claims are DEMONSTRABLY BULLSHIT if they come from the mouth of *anyone* who supports the position @CPhilpOfficial has espoused, which the @Telegraph has splashed on its front page...
To be clear, #Article4 of #UDHR 👇 (also #ECHR and #HRA) is explicit and unambiguous:

"NO ONE shall be held in #slavery or #servitude; slavery and the #slave trade shall be prohibited in all their forms."

Not "British citizens"; not "lawful residents", or "people we like"... Article 1 All human beings are born free & equal in dignity

A lot of people don't seem to understand what we'd lose if we allow the tory government to scrap the HRA. So I have read it, so you don't have to. Here is a thread of what we'd lose...

#HRA #ToryLiars #ToryCriminalsUnfitToGovern #GetTheToriesOut
1. The Right to Life:
'Everyone's right to life shall be protected by law.'
2. Prohibition of Torture:
'No one shall be subjected to torture or to inhumane or degrading treatment or punishment.'

As the Bill of Rights is due to be published, a piece I wrote when the latest #HRA review was announced.

“The championing of parliamentary control sits uncomfortably alongside this government’s consistent attempts to bypass scrutiny and accountability…”…
A reminder that the govt effectively ignored the IHRAR, the previously commissioned independent review of the #HumanRightsAct, which made clear there was no proper basis for the narrative that judges are out of control, nor that groundless human rights claims are proliferating.
Govt didn’t much like those conclusions & commissioned a new consultation for a Bill of Rights last December.

Some 12,483 individual responses were received in response to the consultation which ended on 7 March. They have not been published by the MoJ. h/t @BIHRhumanrights.

House rent allowance.

If I had a penny for every time I was asked about HRA, I probably wouldn't be making this thread :p

A master thread on HRA deduction

#taxsaving #incometax

House Rent Allowance (HRA) granted to an employee is exempt to the extent of least of the following:

•HRA actually received
•Rent paid (-) 10% of salary for the relevant period
•50%/ 40%* of salary for the relevant period

*50% in case of Metro Cities (Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai),
40% in case of other cities

Note: Bangalore counts in other cities, before you ask.
