1/5—Full report coming! In meantime, remarks Re: my #Hurricane #DORIAN data:

Buildup to peak winds was gradual—even once I was in eyewall—likely because of cyclone’s slow forward motion.

Eye had bright, misty quality—I didn’t get stadium effect. Lull lasted long: ~1:05-2:30pm.
2/5—I collected data w/ 2 devices. They matched well: 913.4mb (1:50pm) & 913.7mb (1:53pm) in eye. I sadly ended data collection in eye, as I needed to relocate to safety. I believe I caught min pressure, as it was starting to edge upwards when I relocated—but can’t be sure. Grrr.
3/5—It’s clear my location was stricken by high-energy mesovortices. Couldn't see them in 100% whiteout, but that’s only explanation for crazy pressure fluctuations & also damage—i.e., car thrown from parking lot up onto lawn next to our bunker, *against* primary wind flow.

Ever since I interviewed Kerry Emanuel at the onset of the 2018 #hurricane season, I've been showing some of the results of his team's downscaling approach that, combined with model simulations, can yield projected return periods for outlier cyclone events.

1/
At my public outreach and educational presentations, I've shown how a hurricane like Irma at 180 MPH approaching Barbuda, a 1-in-800 year event, could have its return period reduced to 1-in-80 years by the end of this century. Similarly ...

2/
A hurricane like María at 155 MPH approaching Puerto Rico, a 1-in-200 year event, could have a return period of 1-in-20 years by late this century.

I'm sure some of my followers that have seen my presentations in person recall me showing these slides.

Yep, I’m alive. Made it to Nassau. #Hurricane #DORIAN: By far the most intense cyclone I’ve witnessed in 28 years of chasing. Thought I was playing it safe by riding it out in a solid-concrete school on a hill in Marsh Harbour. Thought wrong.
Winds pounded the building with the force of a thousand sledgehammers. Crept out during eye to find school mostly destroyed, cars in parking lot thrown around & mutilated. Barometer said 913.4 mb.
Frantically piled into few functioning cars (one of them mine) & relocated to government complex before backside struck. Building filled with terrorized refugees, many who had swam to safety or abandoned collapsed houses. The calm eye saved lives—gave victims chance to relocate.

🚨HURRICANE DORIAN UPDATE 🚨

Hurricane Dorian STILL forecast to be a MAJOR HURRICANE for the east coast of the US... most likely impact area will be FLORIDA (although this can always change)

Stay tuned for updates, and PLEASE have a safety plan in place!
GOES-16 Mesoscale Floater of #HurricaneDorian as it starts churning towards #Florida. Dorian is still expected to be a MAJOR HURRICANE at landfall...

Stay tuned for updates as we get them!

Have your #SafetyPlan completed!
#Hurricane #Ready #WRN
Zoomed in look at #HurricaneDorian eye... there is a smaller inner eye, and a larger outer eye. Dorian is over very warm waters with MINIMAL wind shear, which means its likely Dorian will strengthen considerably.

1/9: Over the last 24 hours there have been large eastward shifts in #Dorian's track. It may now just clip #PuertoRico to the east! How?

Let's start with Dorian's vertical structure. One critical change is how vertically coherent Dorian's vortex has become, as seen below.
2/9: Here is another way to view it, this time from a lat-lon map. Over the last four GFS model cycles, the separation between the low & mid level centers of #Dorian decreases until they are on top of each other.

Correspondingly the low-level vortex migrates to the northeast.
3/9: Since #Dorian's vortex is more vertically stacked, it feels a deeper steering layer, moving it more north vs. the low-level flow.

Yesterday's 06z GFS run had a shallow vortex, & its steering was impacted by the low-level Caribbean trade winds (925-700-hPa) into #Hispaniola.

It wasn’t an Act of God. It was an Act of Chevron. An Act of Exxon. An Act of Big Oil. gregpalast.com/new-orleans-wi… #NewOrleans #Louisiana #HurricaneKatrina #Barry #BigOil #Pollution #Environment #ClimateChange
Take a look at these numbers dug out of #Louisiana state records:

Conoco 3.3 million acres
Exxon Mobil 2.1 million acres
Chevron 2.7 million acres
Shell 1.3 million acres

These are the total acres of wetlands removed by just four oil companies over two decades.
#NewOrleans used be to a long, swampy way from the Gulf of Mexico. #Hurricanes & storm surges had to cross a protective mangrove forest nearly a 100 miles thick. Then Standard Oil, Exxon’s prior alias, began channeling pipelines & tanker routes thu the soft delta prairie grass.

Once again (even before the June 1 official start), the Atlantic #hurricane (#TropicalCyclone) season kicked off with a whole ‘nother type—a subtropical storm. #SubtropicalStormAndrea was 2019's first named Atlantic storm.(1/10)
Two of the previous three seasons also started earlier than June 1 with subtropical storms that eventually transformed into tropical entities—#TropicalStormAlberto last year and #HurricaneAlex in 2016. Andrea did not take that leap. (2/10)
Subtropical storms are hybrids—drawing on energy that’s partly from low-level temperature contrasts (extratropical style) and partly from the seasonally warming seawater below (tropical style). (3/10)

Hard to believe, but with the House adjourned until next week, the shutdown will almost certainly extend into a second month. Here’s a recap thread as Union Steward of NHC of what we have lost so far, and what else is on the chopping block:
The National #AMS2019 conference has come and gone. All the potential scientific gains, interactions, new ideas- not this year. I probably regret losing the interactions with the hundreds of student attendees the most- a real missed chance for future inspiration and talent.
The first week of the @FEMA #hurricane preparedness classes is cancelled. The next one is likely to be postponed as well. This class is for decision makers who usually don’t know a lot of meteorology to help them understand what NHC/NWS products can and can’t do for them..

Since the shutdown is nearing a second week, I thought I’d share a thread as Union Steward on how it is affecting me and the @NWS - the agency I work for. While life-saving services continue, the shutdown most certainly still has negative consequences:
The National AMS conference starts next weekend. Thousands of people will gather for it, but unless the shutdown ends- very unlikely anyone from NOAA is going (no travel permitted except for emergencies). So much lost time and money that can’t be recovered.
In mid-January, NHC starts to host #hurricane preparedness training weeks for emergency managers and decision makers from across the southern & eastern US. The shutdown means those classes will be cancelled if it reaches that date- not good for US hurricane readiness.

#DallasThread #Thread #Hurricane #HurricaneFlorence #Flood #Cleanup As the flood waters recede, I want to talk to you about cleaning up. I have received training in disaster relief and sadly have had to use this training.
While this thread is not in-depth, it will be most useful info in one place that I think you will find. It’s also a bit long. Sorry not sorry 😬
Let’s start out by stating the obvious, unless you are saving another human, nothing is worth risking personal sickness or your life for. You must protect yourself first in disaster areas. If it takes another day to get the right gear, wait that day.
