WHO CAN DONATE A CORNEA

Most of the time, corneal donation comes from people who are dead. In very rare circumstances, a donor may be living.

For example a patient who has an ocular tumor in the back of the eye may be able to donate the eye at the time the eye is removed.
If an eye is blind but healthy in the front, that cornea might be useful for donation. There are no instances of donation between people who are living in with healthy eyes.

Another special circumstance where a person may donate a cornea to the other is where one eye can...
...still see and one can't, the person donates the cornea from the non-seeing eye (this very rare).

In addition to the cornea, other parts of the eye including the sclera are used in oculoplastic surgery and in glaucoma surgery. So one donated eye can help more than a person.
